Because it was the logical thing to do. Why go through the hassle AGAIN for components, when they can do that just once (crew + components). If we wait for everything to come out simultaneously, what's the point of this? It's a progressive alpha test, and things are released as they get finished.
Components are still useless? Yes. But the placeholder is already there.
We now have hulls + crew + components.
Crew functionality will be added, then components functionality. All while not halting Based. Essentially, you can even pretend nothing happened, and keep playing the same way for another several months.

Very strange that for almost everyday i would track to ship prices and try to buy when I could... Now I am doing nothing until we do the drop and see what the real value of things are.... I also hope that crafting mods/weapons, etc. all the way to commander drops in SAGE... if it does we finally have an interesting game... if not, all we did was nerf ship values and cause trades to happen on mods/parts until all the high powered items are centralized in a few hands...

I will say that while I am nervous about ships and how that balances out, I am super excited to see my crew.... Stupidly so... lol... those are essentially skins! 🙂
