So far we figured that it takes your windows username + some string that might be the game session id for your user. It will only display this on your screen though - other players should only be able to see your EpicGame nickname.

Workaround - if you want you can create a new windows username - give it a name that you want to use in game and login with it. They mentioned that this will be fixed at some point.

P.S. also if it crashes - go ahead and send the bug report along with the logs then hit restart. It works for me after some attempts and does reset the game.
