Conventional batteries require critical raw materials. Sodium-ion batteries are seen as a more sustainable alternative.
There are high hopes for sodium-ion batteries. Lithium-ion batteries, which are currently used in many devices such as smartphones, laptops and electric cars, contain lithium, cobalt, nickel or graphite. The extraction of these raw materials is often accompanied by environmental concerns and human rights violations.
The company Accupower from Graz wants to solve this problem and is introducing sodium-ion batteries from Austria for the first time under the name “Natec”. Unlike lithium-ion batteries, the Natec battery is based on sodium - a component of table salt.
Mining in Europe
Natec stands for Natrum Technologies, or sodium technologies. This is a series-ready alternative to lithium-ion batteries for industrial applications. The advantage of sodium is that it is the sixth most common element on earth and can also be mined in Europe.
This is particularly important for the continent’s economic independence. "We do not use any critical raw materials in our batteries. So there is no lithium, nickel or cobalt. In addition, our batteries have a service life that is up to 4 times longer than lithium batteries," says Moritz Minarik, head of Accupower.
Battery management system
The Natec battery consists of several sodium cells and a battery management system (BMS), which are installed in the same housing. Accupower does not manufacture the individual cells themselves, but procures them from different manufacturers. According to Minarik, the BMS, or electronic control unit, is the decisive innovation in the system.
"The BMS protects our battery from external and internal influences, such as short circuits, and continuously monitors it via complex data interfaces. Only this battery management system makes our batteries truly intelligent," explains Minarik. This can, for example, prevent overcharging, which is harmful to the battery.
The brains behind logistics
Overall, the development of sodium-ion batteries is progressing. At the end of 2023, for example, the first mass-produced electric car with a sodium-ion battery rolled off the assembly line. However, Natec is less intended for electric cars and more for special applications where such high voltages are not needed.
An example of this is “Grips” (Graz Robust and Intelligent Production System) – a robot developed by students at the Graz University of Technology. The fully autonomous robot is primarily used in logistics. Grips is already powered by a Natec battery as standard.
Robots and wheelchairs
“Automated driverless transport systems are becoming increasingly relevant. With our sodium-ion batteries, we can charge the batteries very quickly. This is a big advantage for the industry,” says Manfred Zettl, the person responsible for safety at Accupower. By this he means, for example, forklifts or delivery robots.
But this is not the only place where Natec could be used in the future. Other examples include harvesting robots, e-scooters, e-bikes and motorized wheelchairs. Battery technology can also be used as an emergency power source in factories. "Our mission is clear: a world that does not live on scarce raw materials, but on innovation. Sodium-ion batteries are a key building block on this path," says Minarik.
Longevity
That's why Accupower thinks about making batteries as long-lasting as possible when developing batteries. "The Natec battery, for example, can be completely discharged and revived after years. This means that, unlike other batteries, you don't have to dispose of it, but can continue to use it for a second life cycle. "says Minarik.
However, sustainability also means paying attention to the way the battery is installed so that it is not damaged when removed and that individual components can be replaced. According to Minarik, sodium has a clear advantage in terms of climate balance: “A concrete example: around 15 tons are emitted worldwide to produce one ton of lithium, while only around 60 kilograms are produced for one ton of sodium.” Overall, according to Accupower, Natec batteries have a 90 percent better ecological footprint than lithium-ion batteries.

Level Design Deep Dive with Blake:

Level designer Blake discussed the extensive iterations of Pisul Arena, showing its evolution from simple scale tests through concepts with hidden passages (like sewers and jail cells within walls) that were removed because players got lost and it added too much complexity/surface area. The design shifted towards an arcade feel built for quick fighting, emphasizing the "skateboard park feel" with ramps, jetpacks, and sliding. The map is currently in a "final pass" focusing on adding art details (like moss, force fields) and performance optimization. The possibility of players watching matches from the grandstands was mentioned as a potential social feature. Pisul is considered an "instant classic".

Gateway (the "OG map") was also detailed. Early versions were highly interactive but overdesigned, leading players to get lost. Gateway had the first live update based on community feedback, resulting in changes like opening up the center area, adding a cargo lift, and removing the basement and secluded rooms to reduce surface area and different levels, making it easier to find players. Feedback about potential spawn trapping in the current version was noted.

Star Atlas announced a major collaboration with Tether, a relationship cultivated for nearly two years.
• Marketplace Transition: As part of the partnership, the marketplace will transition from USDC to USDT as the exclusive stablecoin, likely implemented in the new year.
• Objective: ATMTA's objective is to provide value to Tether by distributing USDT across more wallets and in greater volume.
• Sponsorship: Tether is being looked at as the core sponsor for Holo-Sim Season 1, Chapter 2, which would introduce USDT rewards to the leaderboard prize pool. The collaboration will help introduce USDT value into the Star Atlas economy via marketing and advertising.
🔸 Open Market Operations (OMO)
This new economic plan is designed to help ATMTA thrive despite the depressed macro environment by having ATMTA behave as a strategic market participant.
• Strategic Selling: ATMTA will strategically sell ships in USDC from its remaining origination inventory (no new mints for assets already sold out). ATMTA’s sell orders will be set slightly above the current market price to avoid undercutting player sell orders.
• Strategic Buying: ATMTA will strategically buy ships using Atlas from the emissions curve, allowing players a "craft-to-sell" mechanism.
• Token Offset & Buybacks: USDC revenue generated from ship sales will directly offset ATMTA's daily Atlas and Polis liquidations. Once a revenue threshold is met, ATMTA will use 30% of that revenue to buy back Atlas and Polis from the marketplace, creating a positive flywheel effect.
• Guardrails: Ships purchased by ATMTA to reduce supply and bolster price will be burned. Crafting recipes for ships like the Mamba X and Calico Maxhog are being dramatically simplified to encourage this new craft-to-sell loop.
• Marketplace Fees: Secondary marketplace transaction fees have been reduced to 0% for a 60-day trial period.
🌐 z.ink, C4, and Holo-Sim
🔸 z.ink and C4
z.ink (the SVML1 blockchain and digital identity platform) was created out of necessity due to Solana's network stability and transaction fee issues, which were negatively impacting user profitability.
• Origin Season: The official airdrop campaign is currently live and will distribute 10% of the total z.ink token supply.
• Multipass: This system, acting as a Battle Pass for Alpha or Apex subscribers, offers additional Star Atlas game assets as rewards. The Multipass is envisioned to turn z.ink into a marketing and distribution platform for third-party projects launching on the network.
• C4 Status: The Sage C4 program is feature complete and the team is currently fixing the last bugs and finalizing the front-end UI.
• Launch: The C4 application will launch simultaneously with the z.ink Mainnet Network Genesis Event. A PTR (Play Test Range) launch is possible in January, though not probable.
• Scaling: C4 is expected to bootstrap the network, potentially leading to 50 to 100 million transactions per day, which would place z.ink daily activity on par with Solana.
• Migration: When migrating to C4, all player assets will be automatically and freely teleported back to the CSS (Central Space Station). The transition should be as simple as a button click.

🎮 Unreal Engine 5 (UE5) & Galia
The full suite of UE5 updates, including Galia, new modes, and weapons, is expected to be accessible to the community by the end of this week.
• Engine & Features: The game has been upgraded to Unreal Engine 5.61. New weapons include the Rocket Launcher, the Shockwave Pistol, and the Shockwave Rifle (designed as a counter to fast movement mechanics).

I have read that several times now, but afaik Star Citizen did not at all build their own 3D engine. They are using Amazon's Lumberyard engine (fork from CryEngine - which they started out with). They then had to adjust a lot however, which is also what I alluded to above 🙂 Are you telling me they ditched Lumberjack again as well? I did not pay too much attention for awhile, but I have a hard time believing that. Though not much would surprise me anymore with Chris Roberts heading that 😅

I've been questioning it in my own mind whether anyone other than the original poster has ever benefited from any of the external project/promotional links that have been posted 🤷♂️
It just comes across as really spammy to me without there being any real discussion, if any at all and potentially runs the risk of somebody getting burned by nefarious content...
Also, stone baked - thin crust is the way but if you're in need of a quick fix you'll be pleasantly surprised with Costco's 4 Cheese 🙂
