It's absolutely true that these "AI"s are not intelligent and are not capable of automated reasoning. At best, they can be regarded as expert systems. Imo, they are promising as interfaces, in order to obtain a symbolic representation of the problem at hand from a description in natural language, infer some simple properties, so that we can use true AI techniques to perform symbolic reasoning and obtain provably correct answers. The most promising approaches I've seen so far indeed mix these two sides of AI, using true AI to solve subproblems as they arise, then learning to adapt the solution found. These ML/DL/RL-based approaches like chatgpt also can't solve never-seen problems nor provide explanations, because again that is not intelligence. The risk posed by this simplistic understanding of AI is absolutely real, but simply because they are and will continue to be misused due to the ignorance and greed of people. That is truly dangerous.

But as for your question about definitions, the only important thing is intelligence, which is characterized in AI by the ability of solving problems, that is the ability to provide correct solutions. And here correctness is the combination of the properties of soundness (the answers are in fact solutions) and completeness (all solutions are identified, which is only required if you want to be optimal). The rest is irrelevant, or better those are orthogonal aspects which can be properties of correct intelligent systems: how much is 2+2? 4 is correct (sound and complete), "the same number as the knights of the Apocalypse" could be original, "the number of verses in the following poetry" could be creative, etc. Those are not an issue, irrespective of the meaning you attribute them. Correctness is instead a must for intelligent systems. And these "AI"s cannot guarantee it. There is ample evidence, both theorethical and experimental (like the intelligent systems who correctly recognize birds pictures among other animals, but when asked to highlight for each picture the most salient pixels they point to the corners: birds are mostly photographed in tree foliage or in the sky, so they can recognize a bird photo but don't understand what a bird is). I added two more properties above, but there are even more: (1) the ability to understand, formulate and solve new problems, which humans can do (think of the first time we landed on the mooon without having seen 1k previous landings), and (2) the ability to explain why something is a solution (which requires understanding the model on which one has computed the solution, with its concepts and relationships, like the birds above). This is called Explainable AI, and is the most relevant new trend in AI.

So to be extremely clear on the above, in the birds example, a true AI would know what animals, mammals vs avians, birds, trees, foliage, sky, perspective, background, foreground, etc are, and would deduce by itself what to look at for detecting a bird in the picture. Without training data. Only reasoning ontologically about these things.

Rereading "Red Rising" for like the 4th time right now. My favorite book series of all time. Sci fi futuristic dystopian series. Hello everyone 🙂 , this is off topic, thats why I put it here. I hear that a lot of you guys been worried about the release of Starfield, coming 6:th september 2023. Some of you think that its not good for Star Atlas... let me explain my view on this. For you guys thats not familiar whos pruducing Starfield, let me explain. Starfield is produced by Bethesda studio, they have been in the gaming industry for 30 years, producing top end AAA+ RPG games like Elder scrolls series to Fallout series. (I have played these games since the beginning) When it comes to Starfield they developed this game for more than 7 years, the other recent games they developed it has taken about 4-5 years to create. With all this information as background you all understand it takes many years to develop a top AAA game, even for Star Atlas. In my opinion Star Atlas is not ready for some "finished" realese in the near future because it would be a catastrophe publishing, a multi player sci fi game with excellent graphics and a working economy, thats not better or kind of equal to Starfield. So we shuld be glad that Starfield hits the market now, letting gamers get used to this sci fi era whos coming the next 5-10 years in gaming industry. While meantime Star Atlas can copy + paste the good things directly into Star Atlas. When people understand that they want this Starfield kind of play, but a brand new one, but erning real money at the same time more people will come over to Star Atlas, because this is the first AAA game with stunning graphics and real working economy. So if you say my friend, to my friend, because of my friend, from my friend etc, you would need to use the correct case for the word friend, in practice the right suffix. it's the same in many modern languages, including german.

on top of that, there are genders. so if the noun is feminine (or masculine or neutral), you need to use adjectives etc of the same gender, again changing their suffix based on the gender + based on the case of the noun in that specific sentence.

The distance didn’t reduce my ability to see them or monitor the acceleration, I understand that things further away seem different than they are specially distance from each other and speed. The increased angle and distance would have if anything reduced the perceptible speed.

They continued to accelerate despite getting further away, and the visible angle increasing. Rocket launches don’t do this. They accelerate in your field of view up to a point (above 45 degrees) then they would seem to slow down. This was so slow under 45 degrees it didn’t even look like it was moving the. After 45 degrees the movement was obvious and they continued to accelerate vertically relative to the field of view

Entertaining read guys. I'm for vb's explanation and for the starlink/satellite theory. It does explain Bohdi's observations cause orbit altitude is not constant plus I'd consider the Coriolis force too (so the perceived acceleration by basic trigonometry and physics), and there are plenty of indirect light out there (so the fading). Actually it's been observed that starlink satellites increased the amount of light irradiated towards earth.
