#Looking for targets and reaches

If cost isn’t an issue then NYU literally has the best applied math program in the country
I would look at the UCs, they're all pretty strong in applied math and they all use the same application (UCSD/UCI/UCSB as reaches, UCD/UCSC as targets, UCR/UCM as safeties)
thanks for the suggestion but I eliminated NYU cuz of the whole no campus thing
I like the idea of UCI, probably going to add it to my list
this website is saying that the out of state acceptance rate for UCI is 74%, how is that possible
Math/business are kinda the only areas that actually do feel a little campusy
those are right next together along with the admissions office and some miscellaneous small departmental buildings
calmer more separate area of the city
even with that idk if I can justify the insane tuition and cost of living in the area
that’s crazy if that’s true, i didn’t realize it was that much higher
But i’d say a lot of that’s probably because oos applicants are more qualified
Also they’re being forced to accept less oos applicants starting this year so it’s gonna go down, i have no idea how significantly tho
Yeah that’s def fair
i might apply to a few UC's just as a sidethought, but I am more interested in other schools right now. thanks for the suggestion
thanks for the suggestion though, do you know of any other potential schools?
Reaches would be MIT, Princeton, and Brown
those are definitely reaches haha. apparently brown is like top 5 in applied math programs so might as well give it a try
BU is expensive
yea thats true. i really like boston and i have family there so thats the main reason why im considering
i really wish BU had EA
northwestern ED is also on my radar
would it be a smart decision to ED for northwestern and ED2 for boston uni? i really like both colleges and want to maximize my chances
whats putting me off about that route is if I'm hurting my chances by doing ED2 to bu
how so?
wouldnt ed2 acceptance rate be lower than ed1?
Hello,
I am a rising senior and I'm in the process of piecing together my college list. I would love if I could receive some recommendations (possible targets, and reaches) from those who are familiar with particular colleges with a strong applied math program.
Location/Region: American, anywhere
Major: Applied math
GPA/SAT:
~3.8 unweighted, ~4.2 weighted (4 IBs, 4 DCs), taking 3 IBs and 3 DCs this year. SAT 1480, taking the ACT soon
Curriculum: Strong applied maths program
**Size: ** No preference
Costs: No preference
**Schools you're currently looking at (if any): ** Virginia Tech, UPitt, Stevens Institute of Technology, Texas A&M, BostonU
Additional: I'm not sure how to feel about my EC's I didn't know how the college system worked until recently so I never "planned" my ECs for college. I have spent a considerable amount of time on personal projects which can be best described as creating software to tackle a problem. The main focus of each project was to solve a problem with considerable impact, which I would say is successful. I also did robotics and my team qualified for nationals and an invitational. I participated in a few computer science competitions although no notable results, not sure if I should include that at all. I also tutor kids in math and have spent a lot of time self-studying topics in machine learning and math that I find interesting.
Thanks!
