#OU vs UTD for Surefire Safety Econ!

writing this to procrastinate act prep. input welcome 🤗

I'm trying to limit my list so I have to pick one

Schools: University of Oklahoma and University of Texas at Dallas
Intended major: Economics
Similarities: I believe they'd have a similar cost. OU has a generous NMSF that I believe I'll qualify for. UTD has a full tuition NM finalist scholarship (idk if I'll get that) plus some others I may qualify for though they're competitive, but I'm in-state so tuition isn't high anyway. They're similarly sized schools (18,564 vs 17,979) and public.

OU
Pros-
Not in Texas
Guaranteed scholarship
Technically higher ranked and I believe it has a better reputation
Oklahoma's flagship, so lots of resources.
accelerated Econ BA/MA with emphasis on big data eyeshake huge pog
Cons-
Location. I prefer urban places and while Norman is close to OKC it looks like the most boring suburbia imaginable.
It's a football school so literally everyone and their mother wants to go there. I know no college is HS part two but this would be close.

UTD
Pros-
In-state tuition
Nerd school which I consider a plus because idk i like quirky people. This can be a con too (see below).
Location is more urban. Campus looks nice. (though Richardson is still the mf suburbs)
More diverse. OU is not bad on this front but 60% white so it has an overwhelming majority. UTD has a 40% asian plurality but no racial majority.
Cons-
Close enough that my mom can drive up whenever she wants to see me. So too damn close.
I want to leave Dallas and the connections will probably be very regional. OU probably has the same problem tbh but it is a flagship and UTD is not.
Commuter school. People say it's socially dead.
weeb population is too high smh ||https://www.reddit.com/r/utdallas/comments/v2ljqo/will_i_be_made_fun_of_if_i_bring_my_waifu_pillow/?ref=share&ref_source=link||

Tiebreaking considerations:
Which has better career opportunities, I guess.

OU would have better career opportunities imo because its bigger

idk about econ but for CS at the very least, UTD is nice

#

Dallas has more work opportunities in general

#

wait if ur into econ @desert burrow, then top 6% public HS students should get guaranteed admission to UT

#

And a note on the "weeb population", look for the UTD discord, and go to their equivalent of the starboard ---- spoiler alert, it's very weird

Transfer Admission

Some students who graduate from Texas high schools qualify for automatic transfer admission.

To be eligible, you must:

Have graduated from high school in 2008 or later

Qualify based on Texas law for automatic freshman admission to a Texas university

Enroll at a Texas community or junior college after you graduate from high school

Complete the core curriculum at a Texas public junior college or other Texas public or private lower-division institution of higher education

Earn a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 on a four-point scale (or the equivalent)

Apply for transfer admission to a term no later than four years after the academic year (e.g. 2014-15) in which you graduated from high school

#

If you're down to going to a CC for 2 years (less if you have preexisting AP/other credits), that can work

#

If you strictly like UT more than UTD and OU and can accept going to CC for a period of time, that deal seems highly appealing

Uh yeah sure

UT Dallas has a large discord server but idk if they’re open to prospectives

#

Although ngl their server can be kinda scary from what I’ve heard

I mistyped my question 🤦🏾‍♀️

Also, from what I've gathered, you just need to qualify for automatic freshman admission to a Texas university, i.e., top 10%

desert burrow
#

I meant is cc transfer top 10%?

#

It'll guarantee admission to liberal arts at the least

#

Ideally call UT admission before you make this your surefire safety option

#

You want to be absolutely clear on the terms there

#

Out of curiosity, @desert burrow how much math/CS do you want to study in your econ plan

#

UT is introducing a BS economics plan that allows for more focus on math/CS/stats

#

And also, are you after econ or business 👀 if you want to do this guaranteed econ transfer, it won't leave you much of any room to internally transfer to business school

desert burrow
#

ooh I’m into that. I like economic theory but ik quantitative skills are useful for career/grad school. Plus I just want to be able to learn how to do the analysis I read about in the news

#

close to no business interest tbh

#

How many ap credits will you have

#

We can see if it's possible to squeeze a core complete by end of your first year in CC instead of 2 since BS Econ is likely a bit more time consuming

desert burrow
#

if I don’t drop any classes, 12

If you end up talking that route, I'm more than happy to helping you figure out the credits and such

Thanks! It all depends on how my decisions turn out. trying to go for debt free if possible so in-state is big

desert burrow
#

but OU scholarship is big too 👀 it just requires moving to an inferior state troll

#

UT does tend not to give merit based scholarship though, so I can see why you want to consider OU or UTD for debt free possibilities

this obv doesn't include business, and I don't have a handy resource for that

Your best bet would still be a #954421825427865690 post

Keep in mind that it will have some bias and inaccuracies in describing other programs (after all they're trying to sell a new degree to the authorities) so also look into programs in detail

#

but a good place to start for in terms of econ programs

As conditions permit, make UT part of your list, it's worth it 💯
