#Junior App College List, Refine List, Edit Reaches, Decide ED

love cal poly as a school but compared to other schools w the same acceptance rate I j see less overall prestige, though that doesn't really matter either way
What do you want with prestige? Like easy for jobs or something else?

alr so i've started trimming a bit
atm I'm looking at removing either targets or reaches, with RPI, WPI, UMAA, and USC in my spotlight I think
A&M/Cal Poly too but those I feel have better CS connections for job prospects compared to R/WPI
Junior App College List, Trim Reaches and Targets
Ngl I feel like the list itself is pretty good as is. How many more are you looking at cutting cuz it seems good at 16 total
Maybe 1 at most at this point since it boils down to abt 11 real applications
But 11 is good for me so I don't think it's really needed now
@torpid schooner yeah, I’d personally wouldn’t remove CSU/UC apps because how convenient the app is (CSU ties with target as well on your list). If anything, I’d take out a reach though and add a safety
Or not a “safety”, but a target
yeah def
yoyo its been a bit I've edited my list a bit, though by a bit I mean I eradicated my safeties 💀

Cornell - Reach (ED?)
UPenn - Reach (ED?)

UMass Amherst - Safety (EA)
Want to ask if Swapping VTech and Penn State for Pitt and UMassA was a good idea, looks like it when I look over the factors
First safety better than the rest of the entire list
but maybe im missing something
Also how bad is UWash OOS for CS
ik its like monstrous but how monstrous
Junior App College List, Refine List, Edit Reaches, Decide ED
Oh yeah I'm stuck between whether to ED Cornell or UPenn
Like, 3% iirc 💀. Have you looked at UMD?
I haven't
also what the fuck
Yeah, I'd really want to apply because the campus looks beautiful but fuck that
yeah
UMD is a T20 for CS, and the Iribe building is great.
Plus it doesn't admit by major, and although it's tough to get an auto admit to CS, transferring in from L&S is pretty easy from what I'm told.
Also, you have access to a metro stop at College Park, which'll take you right into DC
Wait sorry UMD or UW?
UW
Oh idk, 50% sounds about right from the site you listed
got it
UMD looks great btw
I was looking through things for it
thx for the tip onit
Yeah np 👍
@fickle plume j finished the entire pitt app except for the personal statement, its obv required for scholarships but in terms of admissions how much do they care about it

ofc it is
A lot prob
W
Both great schools
Those were the first two I applied to as wel
Good luck!
Thanks!
Hey guys
Considering i have uminn and psu and will do cs+biz at both
Is there any reason for me to consider asu over them
ASU is prob better for CS job placement
hmm ic
what abt in comparison to Pitt or UMass Amherst or Rutgers @uncut gulch
im assuming acceptances for those since my stats are way way above their CS accepted avgs
Damn what’s your EFC?
UMass is a T25 program but if you’re looking to live on the west coast ASU might be better. It’s T50ish and has surprisingly good job placement at FAANGs
38213
its bc I fall under WUE and got the New American Scholarship
yeah def, my reservations about ASU is more so the uh, average tier of people who attend
would rather not be lumped in w them
It looks like the WUE scholarship only applies to their downtown, polytechnic and west campuses
shit
oh
its still the exact same
except they give aid to make up the difference
2011-2012?
bug
i hope
oh there's a new one
yeah this makes a lot more sesne
38k
was bouta say
Location/Region: City/Suburb Blue States Preferably Farther from Cali is better but I'm fine being close to home.
Major: CS/Math/Physics, Aim is for Quantum Computing Graduate
GPA/Test Scores (optional): 3.91 GPA, PSAT 1230 Practice SAT/ACT avg: 28/1340
Curriculum: Medium-Hard, I have a procrastination problem and large loads of work feed into it.
Size: Medium-Large
Costs: Will be taking aid/loans most likely,
Schools you're currently looking at (if any): CMU, UC(SD, Berkeley, Irvine, LA) , UChic, UIUC,
Additional: I'm a junior again who's about to complete all his grad requirements, I'm taking exceptional courses and high grades for my age but most of my college choices for this round of apps needs to be really tempered. I want a modern feeling school that's well in touch with tech and one that has a city/suburb where I can live a life outside of it when I'm not studying. Party/Greek life is important but not so much that achievement is gone
Safeties: Penn State, Rutgers, ASU
Targets: Umass Amherst, UW-Madison, UMD?
already mentioned but Rutgers, big school, pretty good for CS. NJIT might be another contender as well as stevens institue of technology and virginia tech. most of those schools have acceptance rates about 50 but it may vary depending on what major you apply under.
Thanks for this, though going for 50% acceptance schools might just make it worth applying my senior and going T20
Can someone look over this list and let me know if it looks good? My main question is if these fully fit the reqs I set before and also if they have a social life that's good, not saying like a full party college but one that isn't entirely filled with socially awk or just zombie-like people because of the school, basically saying that good friends and a party would be nice lol.

I have another question as well, going off CollegeVines chancing sim(which is almost entirely bs I know but their study showed they weren't off by way too much so I'm gonna base this question off of that), my safeties are more likely than not going to admit me, and targets are about a 30%-15% chance, so my question is whether I should just stay another year at my HS to potentially get into a better college or take the early grad that I've been given and get a full year head start in my career
UIUC has a 4~6% cs acceptance rate, I would not call it a safety
UCSD and UCI CS is very similar
none of ur schools are safeties
safeties would be like penn state or rutgers
Really??
What I read put it around 50%
thats the overall acceptance rate of all majors at UIUC. UIUC admits by major so each major has a different acceptance rate. Collegevine doesnt take that into account. UIUC CS is extremely competitive due to its high ranking in it, and so its acceptance rate for CS is 4~6%
maybe for other majors, like art or undecided its 60 or 70%, which is why it looks like a safety school

I see, do you know if its the same for UW-M?
UWM admits you generally and then you declare CS so it shouldnt be as bad as UIUC. However I would still put it at least a target since its a very popular school for CS and they are likely to not admit only CS students.
got it
UWM is basically my target chance wise and top choice overall looking at it, seems to hit every box
yea seems like a good target
Yeah
I'm j screwed for the lang requirement since I only have 2 years rn and they req 3, so I'm going to take Chinese 2 & 3 at my local cc instead of doing j 2 at my HS
looked deeper into this, do you know how popular it is for phys? I'm planning on doing a masters in Quantum Computing and either pathway will let me do it
Im not sure about phys, but UWM CS research is huge and you might be able to find something about quantum computing
👍 sounds good, thanks!

Updated my college list a bit, I have too many reaches tho and not enough targets, any removals/additions yall recommend?
SLO is yeah but pomona is a 55%
oh u meant pomona? got it
yeah but tbf SLO is a solid option, might as well add it
bjz do you know the admit rate for uiuc math?
shud be quite high, maybe above 40%?
math & cs would be around 4 - 6% Iirc
i see. nice to know but still skeptical justifying the costs
yea its not a very cheap school, but worth a shot in case they give some aid
yea
but either way, penn state is very amazing too
what’s the app for uiuc? how many supps etc
true. it’s not a public ivy for no reason
2 short ones
yep
iirc 2 150-word sups
ah nice
and then a 3rd one 150 words if you are applying to an alt major
let’s move over to #🛩-lounge-chat
sure

Hmm, this seems ight I think
penn state safety
I'd put it as safety if u ea
ut austin is a reach
they can only take 8% nontexans
so the acc rate for cs maybe hovers around 1 or 2%
oh dang got it
Honestly would rather have the heft but end up having more final options
Me being a junior makes me j feel unsure about even my highest chance top choice uwm
Gotcha. Just make sure to not apply if you aren’t even ok with going there
I did that mistake. Always better to apply to schools you actually want to consider
got it
@pastel kiln
Yeah wassup
look at the list i replied too
I see
Not really in the biz of judging lists (since mines is dog shit) but ill try my best
icic
i more meant like that on top of the classes is gonna be insane but down to have a judge
I think for the most part its solid but once again not a CS applicant or accurate point of ref
Yeah that shit
That shits going to kill you im ngl
I have the blessing of living in Texas and going to a less than quality HS
Praying for you in your shotgunning
Yeah you mfs are insane
I mean all of your in states being hard target/target/reach is INSANE
TAMU is literally a safety if you have above a 3.6ish down here
10% law for TAMU and 6% for Austin is carrying HEAVILY rn
holy
yeah ik
worst part is not only are our instates hard asl to get in but any other public is j as hard bc of oos deprioritization
so it's like we're screwed either way
How tf are you even supposed to get into college at that point
how tf is everything a reach or target YOU HAVE A 3.9
debuffs
MY UW is a 3.68 AND AUSTIN IS A SAFETY HOW
also small amount of ECs/Early grad debuff
bro bc you have an actually good instate system
our instate is just a cheaper private
I see that holy shit
Dude my ECs are trash too but yall really got nothing to fall back on other than CC
like cal poly SLO has zero prestige right, it's built like a target/safety school imo
30% acceptance
yeah haha
prob why our CCs have such high transfer rates
Well yeah TAG probably but even then iirc it isnt for LA or Cal
Yeah
Cali apps are just wild
ye
at least UC apps are really easy
unified for every school
j due in november which is ass
I honestly dont know how a mf has taken MVC and Linear and gets rejected from every reach
Wasn’t even going to bother in Cali cause app was too weak
dang
tbf you could do the UC transfer strat
go to like UC Merced/SC/Riverside and transfer to a better UC later as if you were at a CC
have cousins who did that for UCLA and UCSD
Yeah but that OOS tuition is ASS
tru tru
Lmao i wish
Texas unis are good tho
Wouldn’t have to go through this process
yeah haha
Yeah but im looking for a change of scenery yk
Gotta get out of HTX shits too wild as of late
Well culture and violence tbh
Shooting eachothers asses off cause no permit law, all the shit coming from the governor, its been too much
ah yeah
Austin is prob bluer than Houston but its like same shit diff place sometimes with TX
Well
college station is culturally conservative
And its going to be much diff politically than cal
But you can find your fit there
im centre-slightly left in poltics
icic
yeah Cali at times is too liberal for me but for the most part I enjoy it a lot, prolly gonna come back after Uni but yeah wherever I go goal is to not go to either extreme or too far right honestly
Dont apply to religious Unis obv and other than that youll prob be fine
ye lmao
Generally colleges are left leaning anyways
yeah
lmao
that reminds me
we had an AO from Duke's Kunshan sister Uni come in at my chinese class last year
one of their key points was that they have freedom of speech
im not even joking
but they also specified that it was only on campus
wonder what happens as soon as anyone leaves
Whenever freedom of speech is touted it’s usually right wing horsehsit
yeah
it is China though so it's a valid thing to mention but they shouldn't have to
nah lmao
No like freedom of speech shit very important over there cause of fascism and all that
Honestly remember the memes about Xi looking like Winnie the Pooh or wtv
yeah ik but its like they're touting it as such a great place to study and then they're like oh yeah you're only free on campus
yeah lmao
Prob cause its china
tru
Honestly my personal identity comes into the forefront when deciding where to go to college (black person) and ive had to change my list and adjust and shit mostly because of that
yeah that makes sense
Like im not going to go to buttfuck Indiana
lmfao
yeah basically any Rural state is off the books for me
purdue is the only exception
ye
i'd say i'm worried too but then I look at my disc banner/bio and it's like shit maybe im the problem
Dartmouth only really remains cause of FA and its in the north east so not as bad
LMAOOOOOO
Never
yeah north east is good
though its either hella eccentric rich boomers or peak east coast liberalism
Yeah, which i suppose doesnt really mix well with some southern, rugged, poor African-American
But thats all top 20s though, id be limiting myself at that point
It’ll be a culture thing i have to look past
yeah
and i mean you can find other student's experiences too
see how they felt about the uni/region around it's overall culture
Yeah, mfs will be talking about their Maserati breaking down on them and ill have to gently remind them that i dont have a license
lmao
yeah i have this friend who got a tesla before she got her license, then failed her first drive test
and at that point I had my license for 2 months by my parents wouldn't let me drive alone
“What car did you get for your 16th birthday” dude I walk
even though I passed first try at a dmv with an 80% fail rate
I dont even have a car to drive
not even a parents?
No 💀
oh dang
Ive been bumming rides since 7th grade
lmao
that's basically what happened w my thighs
after like 6th grade I j started biking everywhere
My bike has had a flat for a few months and I dont have a pump rn
So stepping it is
I do own one of those single wheel motorized things but I don’t really use it
Limits the ECs sometimes but its cool
Oh dude were you in the other chat for the underclassman stories 💀
shit like that can tear ppl down but you're doing p well in school even if it's not top tier
nah i wasnt haha
14 as in class rank?
bc i mean with the way AOs compare your stats that's a really good look
top 5%
Yeah
Trying to apply to an Ivy ED or SCEA
Still widely under qualified but its worth a shot yk
Gn
