Some by word of mouth, some by the school website
Location/Region: City/Suburb, living in TX
Major: CS
GPA/Test Scores (optional): 3.99 UW, 4.69 W, 1580
Curriculum: Fine with rigorous
Size: Any size but not too small like LACs
Costs: not necessary
Schools you're currently looking at (if any): attached
Additional: looking for a strong CS school, maybe also dual degree or honors programs like Berkeley MET, UPenn M&T, UT CSB, UT Turing
you basically have every single cs school on the list 💀
but you could apply to penn state as a safety
if you apply in early oct you'll get a decision earlier nov
so you can worry less
Rice and USC are not targets, they are also reaches
purdue is kinda a reach too for cs
UT CS won't be easy either, even though you are form texas and likely an auto
some targets I recommend you apply to: UW-Madison, Umass Amherst, UCSB
A&M’s college of engineering releases EA results by mid December, so not sure if applying to Penn state is redundant, but ig one more safety can’t hurt, depending on how busy I am.
Rip I felt like I had strong odds at UT CS based on class rank and academics
ofc you will have a way better chance that others but just be warned its gonna be competitive too
ah I'd apply TAMU then
although I think you dont need an essay for psu
I’ll probably apply to UCSB too since UC no additional essays needed and maybe try to apply to UW Madison or Amherst too
yea I would def apply ucsb
you might be able to cut some reaches out for madison or amherst
@silver venture of note, UT [CS], Rice, USC [Viterbi CS] and Purdue [CS] ARE NOT TARGETS
I imagine you are highly qualified but <10% for the first three and 15% for the last one leaves more to be desired for the purpose of a "target"
And as BJZ noted, this is basically EVERY top CS school 😭
Also question, why Yale or Brown, other than them being part of the ivies?
Brown’s open curriculum and Yale’s…library? I been more focused on researching other colleges so I haven’t really gotten around to Brown and Yale…and other colleges. Tbh not sure if I will apply to them, since it’s just a rough college list, and depends on how I feel senior year.
I knew UT CS was competitive but I thought my academics especially auto admit would make me a strong applicant. Rip
I'm personally more opposed to shotgunning than some others, in the sense that I urge people not to apply to places they don't have a genuine appeal for
Auto admit is great, but with over 10k people fighting for 800 offers, it's rather competitive 😩
Wouldn’t there be more available seats for auto admits though?
Or am I just coping 💀
that makes sense, I wouldn't recommend Yale at least since their CS currently isn't as developed as others (e.g, there are other schools with stronger CS and more chance of getting in). I was admitted there this cycle but after visiting current CS students there, a lot of them talked about how although yale is investing a lot into their program it's currently not super strong, especially with stuff like ai/ml. If u were willing to combine cs with a humanities focus or something like economics/business then it would be better
I am sure UMD CS is competitive, but probably not that crazy
UDub is kinda the exception 😵💫
Yes, but I'd still like to think of it as at least somewhat of a reach...
I don't recommend you applying to the ivies (besides like mb cornell), since they're not the best for a cs major, and are still highly wildcard. Adding more safeties & good targets would be much better than more reaches. If you're going for more UC's, UCI CS is a pretty good target, and I think UC Davis is a good safety. RPI is also a pretty good CS safety.
