Location/Region:
Preferably Urban (!). I've already got a good amount of schools from the north-east on my list, so maybe some west-coast/south-east.

Major:
CS (If anyone cares, I want to go into WebDev/UI-UX)

GPA/Test Scores:
4.6 W (No UW)
34 ACT

Curriculum:
I guess more on the open side? Not that big of a deal either way.

Size:
Medium-Large school

Costs:
Don't want a ton of debt (who does), my parents have around $80k in a college savings account, so I guess I'm more on the flexible side.

Schools you're currently looking at:
Safeties:
Binghamton
SUNY Buffalo
Pitt
Penn State

Targets:
UMD (As previously mentioned, my Dad went to the School of Engineering)
(Hard Target) UMass Amherst
Stony Brook

Reaches:
Georgia Tech
Purdue
Vandy (Grandparent went there, might as well)

Additional:
I couldn't imagine anywhere colder than Buffalo.

Mines is really good, make sure to check it out.

#

good scholarships too. aid and merit

I encourage you to look into Cornell CALS information science, it may be cheaper for you since you’re a NY resident

#

Rice is very generous with need-based aid too so definitely check them out

Per here, yes

#

Note, Cornell has IS programs in CAS, COE and CALS

#

So you’ll want to decide which one you want to do in advance

#

If you’re into information science/systems, look into CMU too, their program is top notch

#
#

This should help you understand the difference between CAS/CALS/COE IS

Tysm! Just one more question, do you know if the Calculus requirement listed under the admissions tab means it would be required prior to admission, or just prior to attending the school. Would I be able to take Calc at say, a community college or a summer program?

Will do! Thanks again.

For example, Princeton's website says that most families making between 100-120k receive a financial award that covers 100% of tuition and 54% of room/board. Princeton of course has a very generous financial aid program that's not representative of many schools, but nonetheless something to consider

Yep, if a school is charging 80k per year, they definitely won't be expecting someone with an income of 115k to pay full price (and if they are, run the other way)

solemn tapir
#

Sounds good, thanks! Do you guys have any more suggestions regarding more target schools?

solemn tapir
#

Might add Cal Poly to a Hard Target too. The school looks really interesting and has some good course offerings.

Clarkson is pretty cold but can be cheaper if combined with going to CC.

#

CC isn't very flashy but would be a great choice if cost is a big factor

Anyone else have any other recommendations?

definitely check out CMU’s HCI program. you’d have to apply though SCS which is extremely competitive

#

UPenn also has a special program called Digital Media Design (basically CS + Art/Design)

#

I think Drexel has a program specifically for UI/UX and also their CS program is good and they have co-ops (they do have a quarter system though so things may be fast paced)

#

Syracuse is also good for CS imo, it’s just very expensive

Oh maybe I should’ve done that when I applied 💀

real solstice
#

Correct me if I'm wrong, but to the best of my knowledge, CALS and CAS IS have similar major courses?

#

Not 100% sure if they share the same set of concentrations

#

Yep, they’re mainly both the same at both schools but I think what mainly makes them different is the different requirements. At CAS you’ll be taking Foreign Language courses and a large variety of courses (they make you step out of your comfort zone) while at CALS, it’s more structured and narrow and you’ll take more Physical and Life Science courses

My friend currently goes to CAS for CS and he seems to enjoy a lot of his courses

#

Also look into Northeastern for their combined majors, especially CS + Design. After this year though, it’s definitely going to competitive so good luck if you apply

Would anyone recommend anymore safeties/targets that are somewhat affordable(other than SUNYs)?

Definitely looking at WPI, thanks for the recommendation @shrewd sigil . I've looked at RPI before and I just don't know if I'd love going there or anything

RPI’s administration is horrible apparently

im biased, but add Virginia tech as a hard target. the college of engineering is wonderful and u get the experience of a real college town. also the food is amazing and ranked #2 in the country

#

FAANG placements are also very high!

I really love (for example) stuff like the new UBuffalo CS building and Maryland's Iribe Center for comparison
