Schools: UCSB vs. NYU
Intended major: economics (hoping to transfer to business tho)

UCSB
Pros:

  • good weather! next to the beach & sunny all the time
  • lots of friends going here
  • closer to home (am from cali)
  • party school lmfao

Cons:

  • got in for economics, and they don't have a business school so i wouldn't be able to transfer (but who knows may end up staying in econ anyways???)
  • less prestige

NYU
Pros:

  • new york connections
  • has an amazing business school (but definitely cannot get in 🗿)
  • beautiful location
  • better than ucsb for econ
  • good prestige

Cons:

  • would be starting in the spring semester so im very worried ill be left out and ill have to work extra hard during the summer to catch up
  • SO expensive (my parents can afford it but idk if its worth it esp for undergrad)
  • not as safe as ucsb
  • far from home

**Addendum: **

  • top goal is to go to a school that can prepare me for grad school! i feel like nyu will be better than this but i just don't know if its worth 320k

also no campus which is a large consideration a lot of people don't notice

#

I would pick ucsb, like you said excellent parties, lower stress, and low tuition

#

NYU I might give more consideration if you do NYU Stern but otherwise I would pick UCSB 100%

I would prefer a campus based school to reduce the chance of crime even more

#

I feel like safety concerns in a place like NYC are just a dog whistle I'm sorry

#

I'd be more worried about being run over by a car

Much more worried

No one is going to read "person gets killed by car for the 5000th time this year"

Just accept it

Crime is all about hysteria

#

Just don't think about it lol

#

I wasn't about to get jumped and murdered

marsh hamlet
#

The only school where I'd be even slightly concerned about that is UChicago

#

And even that is a stretch and that wouldn't factor into a decision

I'm more likely to consider ucla which is also in a safe area for example

#

You are so much more likely to die of factors that you aren't even considering

marsh hamlet
mighty saffron
#

it's one factor in many

marsh hamlet
#

That leads to many dying every year

#

vs the relatively slow moving traffic of NYC

mighty saffron
#

traffic here is no joke lmao

marsh hamlet
#

Not like fast traffic jams

#

It's just a nearly irrelevant concern

#

If something happens so little, you should eventually stop thinking that much about it

#

You'll be cutting opportunities because of things that objectively speaking don't affect the vast majority of people

#

And the fear of crime in this country

#

Let's be honest

#

Is based more off of racist fear of minorities than it is on actual danger

#

That isn't always the case and I bet as a young and highly-educated person it isn't for you either

#

But it's what started this hysteria and American stereotype in the mid-20th century

#

Even then tho things weren't as safe as they are now

#

It was hysteria even then

#

And now we have almost no crime

#

Yet people are still freaked out about this stuff

#

It's just perplexing

#

Sorry by the way to OP for ruining your forum post with this convo :p

meager token
#

NYU imo

#

nyu has stronger econ side but if livability and being close to family is more imp

#

then ucsb

NYU. You can't do much with an econ degree from what i've heard so business just makes more sense
