Major: Biomedical Science / Biophysics at UPenn & Duke, Materials Science Engineering at Tech; pre-med track. Minor in Spanish
UPENN
Pros:
- LOVE the campus and city
- Penn Medicine and hospital research/internship/premed opportunities (well-established)
- Ivy League prestige
- Flexibility of double majoring
Cons:
- Not as many music opportunities in orchestra (I’m a violinist and super passionate about music)
- Party culture
- Farthest away from home (12+ hr drive)
- Costs the most (12K more than cheapest option)
- Less AP credits
- Toxic pre-professional culture, competitive and cutthroat sometimes
DUKE
Pros:
- Good reputation for med/premed
- Second closest to home
- Beautiful campus
- “Southern Ivy” prestige
- VERY nice people. I vibed with so many wonderful folks at Blue Devil Days.
- Research opps nearby (hospital, Duke Medicine)
Cons:
- Not as big of a city (I want to live in a city)
GEORGIA TECH
Pros:
- Cheapest option
- Was offered a very selective (top) merit scholarship
- Close to home, familiar city
- A community of scholars and a tight-knit support network for MSE majors
- Many many internship, co-op, and research opps in Atlanta
- Accept the most AP exam credits
Cons:
- Not as prestigious as Duke or Penn
- Perhaps not the best program for pre-med (school is known for engineering)
Duke vs UPenn vs Georgia Tech for premed
For Penn double majors are easy if both majors are in the same college, but difficult if they are not
What is the cost difference between Penn and Duke?
Personally Duke gave me far more aid than Penn but I’ve seen it go both ways
For premed, gpa is important and I am under the impression Duke is much better than Penn for that
Penn is only slightly more expensive by a margin (around $2000-$3000 more) compared to Duke for me. Curious as to why Duke may be a better place for gpa? I’m thinking about majoring in biomed and then doing a double minor in business mgmt and Spanish if I’m at Penn so I’ll be doing classes in all 3 schools… I may be a lil too ambitious
