Schools: UMich vs. UVA
Intended major: Computer Science in Engineering School
Similarities: Both are public
UMich Pros:

  • More opportunities for undergraduate research
  • More opportunities for entrepreneurship
  • Bigger pipeline to Silicon Valley and FAANG
  • Family in Ann Arbor
  • Higher ranked for CS
  • Expansive student organizations such as Michigan Mars Rover, Michigan Hackers
  • Larger alumni network

UMich Cons:

  • Little bit more expensive than UVA
  • Cold weather
  • Inconvenient transportation to visit home
  • Huge undergraduate CS/Engineering population
  • Probably more rigorous in terms of coursework (could also be a pro)

UVA Pros:

  • A little less expensive
  • Nice weather and campus
  • Respectable FAANG and Silicon Valley pipeline
  • Know a lot of people going there
  • Lots of family in Virginia
  • Much more convenient in terms of visiting home
  • Respectable CS rankings and academics
  • Smaller than UMich

UVA Cons:

  • Fewer entrepreneurial opportunities
  • Fewer student organizations
  • Less focus on engineering
  • Fewer undergrad research opportunities
  • Lower rank

I work for a big tech company in west coast, I've met people graduated from umich cs, but yet to meet anyone from UVA CS. But this is just my personal experience, it by no mean represents job prospect for either school.

the cs department isn't one of their strong points but its on the whole like pretty fine anyway but one of the big downsides is a fairly small selection of courses in more recent cs disciplines and not a huge number of actually competitive cs related/adjacent competitions (robotics, etc)

there are research opprotunities and theyre not super difficult to get but they arent necessarily in pure cs
