schools: cmu vs ucsd
intended major: information systems (dietrich) @ cmu or computer science @ ucsd
similarities: both have really excellent swe/product manager career outcome & overall academic atmosphere
cmu
pros:
- IS flexible and most students double major in hci or minor in cs
- near/in a city and has fun things to do
- more tight knit community (and better support system overall?)
- could switch to stats + machine learning major in dietrich (which seems to yield great swe careers?)
- easier to get internships?
- more prestigious
cons: - more expensive (almost double the cost of attending ucsd as an cali in-state)
- IS not CS
- far from home
- classes are hard
ucsd
pros: - cheaper! by a significant amount
- many friends going to ucsd
- cs major: feels like a more solid education than information systems which feels kind of iffy (?)
- better weather than pittsburgh (by a lot; i love cali weather)
cons: - uc for the socially dead :c
- la jolla seems to be kind of. dull
- less perceived prestige
- mostly for swe and less product manager (less business-y if you will - might need to take mba after?)
dont really hve any tiebreaking considerations - cost not a suuper big factor - mostly concerned about experience/career outcome
currently leaning more cmu?
