Schools: University of Florida vs Duke
Intended major: General Chemistry
Similarities: Both would be about the same amount of money like 25k (depends if i get bright futures scholarship)

University of Florida Pros:

  • Much closer to home/family
  • I may be able to get Bright futures full ride scholarship
  • best school for Chem in FL (#59 in US), - - less prestigious (I really don't like stuck-up environments)

University of Florida Cons:

  • Really hot weather
  • Lots of jocks and sporty people in cliques I've heard.

Duke Pros:

  • ~60k in grants (need-based) given,
  • my dream state/college
  • amazing campus/views,
  • ego booster 🤦🏽‍♀️

Duke Cons:

  • Will probably be more expensive (~25-30 k)
  • super far out from home.
  • preppy people from feeder private schools probably
  • Lower ranked for chem (#89)

Tiebreaking considerations:

The only tie breaker is I really want a single dorm...like really.

well i already have an AA degree so wouldn't that take off a lot of the classes anyways? also UF tuition would still be around ~25 k per year with the bright futures i have as of now. i need 34 more community service hours tho to get the higher bright futures

If what I have been hearing is any indication, Duke also has a lot of cliques and a pretty fervent sports culture

ok im biased bc im at duke but our chemistry department is honestly p cracked, we just dont have a lot of people who pursue pure chemistry cus its way too hard lmfao. and from what ive seen that drags down the ranking of our program

like some of my smartest friends dropped chem because orgo 2 is whooping them

#

that aside we have some really cracked chem profesors

like my orgo 1 prof has multiple nmr spec patents and like a list of 60 awards/publications

ok time to address stuff seriously lol

-There are a LOT of people from feeder schools but almost everyone is super nice/humble and you honestly would not be able to tell if you just talked with them 1 on 1.

  • the basketball culture here is huge but you can def not participate if you dont want it. you dont have to know anything about basketball, a lot of people come in never having watched a single basketball game in their life but fall in love because of the energy/vibes

-i honestly dont know why our student body is so consistently hate on because I come from a really humble high school background and the people I have met here are some of the nicest and most brilliant i have met. Like legit everyone is so good at everything but no one really cares much about it and so super lowkey. ISTG everyone was at least all county first chair in their instrument, state level in their sports, wrote a paper, was in americas got talent, won master chef jr as a kid (both of the previous I have met), are a calvin kelin model, etc

-campus is honestly super beautiful

  • there are a LOT of research opportunities because of how large our natural sciences research department is

  • food is great, like consistently ranked t3
#

-the overall college experience at duke is amazing; one of the most well balanced school in terms of balancing life/ health/ school/jobs/ and having fun

-our dorms are pretty good with the exception of like 1

#

  • on the note of research, almost everyone gets to participate starting first sem if you want. I joined a materials lab that synthesized carbon nanotubes for masss spectromeeters first sem through a program called muser

and now im in autonomous neurosurgical robotics lab

im working on using ml and image processing to scan branins and create 3d models

my friend in a chem lab is helping synthesize a new drug
