UIUC Pros:
-
Top choice for CS. Ranked like 5th so would consider just a hair less the top 4 (cmu, mit, berkeley, stanford)
-
Good environment since the top smart ppl from their classes gonna come here
-
Huge career fairs and employment opportunities afterwards.
-
I believe, the value of UIUC CS will take me a long way in industry. PS: I don't actually wanna do a masters so it is most likely industry after my undergrad.
-
Had been a dream school
UIUC Cons:
-
Cost ($62k). A bit above than what we thought but it's kinda in the range and manageable.
-
Middle of nowhere
-
Not so great food (my speculation)
-
I find the campus to be in a little rural setting but not a factor, I'd consider.
-
Away from my relative's house (which would be technically my ' home ' since i'm international.
UMASS Pros:
-
Scholarship of $14k p/a
-
Close to my relative's house (about 2 hr drive)
-
Awesome food
-
Campus is in a collegiate environment
UMASS Cons:
-
It kinda pales off in front of UIUC CS
-
A mediocre CS school
-
Peer group won't be that competitive
Alright, so the above are my speculations without visiting the above schools. Kindly help me in making the right decision. The cost does not play a major role if UIUC justifies. Thank you for reading and any input will be appreciated. Thank you!
lol can you again tell after reading the pros and cons. sorry for the delay in sending it. thank you!
uiuc still better
jobs are good and you can afford it
and u can fly to ur relatives house
ur gonna be in dorm anyway
thank you for your input!
Is cost a big factor for you?
If so, then go with UMass. But otherwise I think UIUC is worth the extra money
Not a very big factor. But since you said UIUC is worth the extra money, I'd go with UIUC
Thank you for the input!
uiuc will set you up for the typical bachelors industry SWE life so uh, take it if you want it:d
I have not gone to UIUC in person, but I have been to UMass. Would agree on most of your pros/cons, haven't researched as much for the specific subjects on UIUC as well. Just want to say that UMass' CS is very good. Not great for interdisciplinary stuff, but good enough to get you through. Great opportunities in Boston as well, if that's what you're looking for.
Also, don't factor food in. Both are in the middle of nowhere, so it's going to be chain places or campus food. UMass' campus food is MARGINALLY better than other places I have tried, and nowhere near what you can get in a city.
Of course, there are always a few mom and pop shops, and that is arguably better at UMass because there are a bunch of other colleges around (bigger market -> better individual places).
Just my two cents; again, haven't been to UIUC, can't really talk on it. Have been to UMass and know quite a few people there.
Would also recommend looking on LinkedIn and seeing where their graduates work, and seeing if that lines up with your goals.
Could you find specific school graduates on linkedin?
Like search up “UIUC grads”?
vast majority of UIUC on linkedin are probably engineering, sciences, and business, so go figure where they'd work:)
yep, that's what my impression about UIUC is and the reason why I'm leaning towards it!
thank you for the input
Thank you for the insight! Definitely the area around UMass gives it an edge
