Schools: UT Austin (Honors) vs Berkeley EECS vs TAMU Full Ride vs Georgia Tech vs Cornell vs Duke
Major: COMPUTER SCIENCE
Similarities: State Schools (for the first 3), t10 CS programs

UT AUSTIN
School 1 Pros:
In-state tuition (cost). Close to home & lots of friends
Honors = smaller class sizes and easier to get research/other opportunities on campus
Location (lots of tech companies in Austin), campus is cool
School 1 Cons:
Weather
Too close to home, won't get to explore another state
Prestige ✨ (compared to the other schools)

UC BERKELEY
School 2 Pros:
Location
Recognition/ranking/prestige 😭
Chance to move far away from home for college
Slightly better curriculum (? need confirmation)
Weather
School 2 Cons:
Cost
CS overenrollment issue (potentially, I don't know if its an issue for EECS majors though)
Housing

Cornell, Duke, and Georgia Tech are the same as Cal except they don't have the overenrollment/housing issue, and GT is about 18k/year cheaper than the others.

Tiebreaking considerations:
Coursework for CS
Feasibility of doing a double major with Math (or maybe Finance)
Recruiting/Undergraduate research opportunities/industry connections

ucb is a phenomenal cs school. also sf is right there if you wanna get an internship

#

sf has a TON of startups

sly trail
#

thats true

#

it also costs 3 times as much as UT

#

😭

hallow shore
#

I think cost would be major factor here

#

do you know the price for each school

sly trail
#

UT Austin - around 25k/year
UC Berkeley/Cornell/Duke - 70k/year 😭 i got no aid
Georgia tech - 51k/year or something like that

#

im leaning heavy towards UT

amber arch
hallow shore
#

damn wtf

#

did you try to negotiate

amber arch
#

yeah def go to ut austin imo

hallow shore
#

yey

amber arch
#

lots of bay area tech people move to austin and texas anyways

hallow shore
#

UT def unless you want to drown in debt (or if your family is well off)

amber arch
#

it might even be easier to get a job in cs because there’s significantly less competition than in the bay

#

and you can always go to grad school later on in the future if you want to

trim girder
#

I’d say Berkeley eecs if the debt isn’t that bad

amber arch
#

but i’d say go where you’ll end up with the least amount of debt

#

berkeley is a great cs school but that cost… yikes

hallow shore
#

280k 4 years

#

not worth it for any school

trim girder
#

Not if the parent can pay for it and is financially stable

#

Can’t go wrong with any of these tho so no bad choices here

sly trail
#

like my efc was twice as much as my entire family makes in a year

#

and i don’t think we have many assets unless my dads hiding stuff 😭

hallow shore
#

def tho, but either way the cost gap is too significant as compared to the education/outcomes gap

sly trail
#

fs

#

that’s why i’m leaning UT

sly trail
#

like it has all 4 of the others

#

plus a bunch of startups

#

also there’s like dell and oracle

amber arch
#

oh yeah

sly trail
#

i just like need to convince myself to choose it lol

amber arch
#

ok honestly go with ut austin

#

it’ll be cheaper

#

sf is overpriced and kinda gross

hallow shore
#

if I were you, I would choose UT in a heartbeat

amber arch
#

ut austin + honors is insane you madlad

sly trail
sly trail
#

austin is cool

#

also another thing im@considering is that i don’t like texas that much lol

#

weather wise at least

#

and i kinda want to go to somewhere in another state to like actually get experience living somewhere else

amber arch
#

california isn’t that much better tbh

#

no water + expensive + fog + no seasons

sly trail
#

i mean its always way too hot here lmao

#

thats true though

hallow shore
#

program prestige matters more to you here

sly trail
#

that + moving far away from home

hexed fjord
#

Oof I'd say go for UT Austin

dusty wagon
hexed fjord
#

Mainly cause of the cost

dusty wagon
#

berkeley is not worth $200k

sly trail
#

thats what im thinking rn

#

unless i somehow get aid from one of the other schools

#

but thats probably not happening

#

i fumbled the gatech full ride lmao my interview was so bad

hexed fjord
#

Prestige only matters to so much of a degree

#

100k for college vs 300k

sly trail
#

fr

hexed fjord
#

And plus u still got ur whole life to go to other states

#

youll be able to see fam and you'll already have friends

sly trail
#

true

hexed fjord
#
  • the tech companies nearby
hallow shore
heady igloo
#

im picking UT

#

youll get the same opportutnites for 200k less

#

im assuming ur turing scholars ?

#

turing name is hella prestigious in cs world

#

ez internship

sly trail
#

well im tryna choose between turing+deans and csb

#

but im leaning turing+deans

heady igloo
#

that depends on what u wanna do

#

i’m prob gonna pick csb

sly trail
#

oh fr

heady igloo
#

yea

sly trail
#

are you gonna do entrepreneurship or something

heady igloo
#

not necessarily

#

i think csb just aligns with my interests more

#

turing is a program focusing heavily on research

sly trail
#

makes sense

#

i think ima just do an MBA if i want business skills

heady igloo
#

yeah

sly trail
#

bc undergrad business doesnt mean much

#

professionally

heady igloo
#

that’s also a valid option

#

which school r u leaning towards

sly trail
#

UT lol

#

everything else costs too much

heady igloo
#

yessir

#

hook em 🤘🏾

sly trail
#

💯

If you would care to list cost of attendance for each school you are contemplating, it will be most helpful

hallow shore
#

plus one

fresh blade
#

Was going to say Berkeley because EECS so you'll have little issue paying back loans, but 70k... das 280k for 4 years. Gonna have to go with UTA. Pretty sure a lot of tech companies are moving to Texas anyways

vestal parrot
misty glen
#

At that level I would unironically just choose the cheapest one

vestal parrot
fresh blade
#

Wow TAMU has 72,000 students...

vestal parrot
misty glen
#

If GaTech is cheaper than the others I'd go there. The quality is similar and it let's you do a double major in Math and CS. They also have threads that let's you focus specifically in the part of CS you like so I'd say they have good CS Coursework

#

also the UCB thing I'm pretty sure only effects L&S CS students and those who want to switch into CS

#

EECS should have no issues

bleak thistle
#

fuck dook

sly trail
sly trail
sly trail
#

ok @ everyone who was on this thread

UT Austin vs TAMU Full Ride + BS/MD/MS (basically a free bachelors and masters in CS and an MD over the course of 8 years)

misty glen
#

woah woah woah UT Austin vs 3 free degrees?

#

like a free BS, a free MS, AND a free medical degree?

sly trail
#

😭

hallow shore
#

ummm

sly trail
#

bro no matter what i choose im gonna feel like i messed up

hallow shore
#

how??!??!?

sly trail
#

also the downside about the a&m thing is that i'll be like tied there for grad school

#

or i mean

#

its not binding to go there for the 4 years after undergrad

#

but like the program will kinda make me want to do that

#

instead of going to like another school for grad school

#

also a&m is in the middle of nowhere

#

and idek if i wanna do an MD but computational bio sounds cool so thats why like premed+cs would be nice

hallow shore
#

i feel like TAMU is too good of a deal to pass up on

#

however im not sure if grad prestige matters for ur major

#

nonetheless you'll save tons of money and be in a good standing financially, regardless of ur salary, if u choose tamu

#

you may pay off the money at UT AUSTIN, but 20k/year is stil alot and since you're considering to go to grad school it may become a noticeable burden

#

if i were you , i would get that free ride under grad and then go to prestigious grad school (if prestige even matters for ur major)

sly trail
#

and im like 99% sure i can make 13k over a summer

#

so im not gonna have debt if i go to UT anyways

hallow shore
#

mhm maybe it is worth it then

#

you also have the honors program thatll boost ur resume/skills

#

also 13k over the summer wtf

sly trail
#

i think it was like 49

#

and 75% of freshmen get internships

hollow axle
#

For some summers you should be able to def get a good internship

sly trail
#

50*40*4*2 = 16k in 2 months

hollow axle
#

Im a freshman (not in UT honors) but mine pays 12 bands so it’s def doable

#

I think UT is the choice regardless

#

UT honors is ridiculously hard to get into no?

sly trail
#

no clue

hollow axle
#

The whole thing abt in state and “I wanna be away from home I don’t wanna see ppl from high school” literally doesn’t matter trust me

sly trail
#

50 kids a year for both the programs i got into (deans and turing)

#

which im choosing

hollow axle
#

I go to state school from home and it doesn’t affect me at all

sly trail
#

theres another one i got into called CSB which is supposedly 30 kids a year and its CBHP (business honors) + cs honors

#

but id rather do math+cs i think

hollow axle
#

I think those are very selective from what I remember

#

100% go UT

#

You got some really awesome options tho good work

sly trail
#

i think this is the first real convo ive had w u 💀

hollow axle
#

Perhaps

sly trail
hollow axle
#

I think we talked about NAV once

hollow axle
sly trail
#

i mightve been trolling

hollow axle
#

Ur not a NAV fan!?!!??!?!

#

Sad

sly trail
#

like navs good but i dont fr think that nav 🐐
