#Cornell vs. Emory
54 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
hi! now that i’ve received all my decisions, i’ve narrowed it down to these two schools
intended major: neuroscience at emory, biological sciences at cornell
similarities:
tier 1 research institutions
undergraduate research opportunities
clubs that i am interested in
good food options
Cornell (CALS)
pros:
closer to home, still relatively far however (~250 miles)
highly research-focused
fun campus life across the university (slope day, dragon day, etc.)
in-state, can apply for more financial aid
cons:
really big school, might be overwhelming at first
not as much to do in surrounding area
cold weather
less financial aid given
emory (oxford college)
pros:
beautiful campus
smaller environment, tight-knit community
near atlanta, many opportunities and things to do there
better weather i think?
more financial aid given, most out of all my schools
cons:
further from home (~850 miles)
expensive transportation costs (flights back home)
may feel disconnected from main campus in atlanta?
what have u heard abt the cornall campus life
my friend might commit there but knows nothing

ur con is a pro for him too
can i ask where ur from
emory imo
is cornell still cheaper for in state tuition after fin aid
cornells weird
in state vs oos doesnt matter for some schools in it and does for others
ik aap for example is private so oos is the same
the costs are the same for in-state/oos
so its private
it's because they are contracted by the state
it's private but gets public funding
only some colleges are state-contracted
yeah
tuition varies for those colleges only
this person is cals btw
but what would total costs be at both
i don't think the person said
just said oxford gave more fin aid not it's cheapest
prestige is overhyped
I meant public schools are often cheaper
so you can graduate with no debt
privates can be expensive if you don't get enough fin or merit
eh, it's diff for cornell. the costs are pretty similar. tuition at emory before aid is 10k more. assuming OP received more aid (more than the cost difference), emory could be the better option.
i’m from new york!
also the initial cost of cornell is cheaper, however the aid they gave me ends up making it more expensive compared to the aid emory gave me
then i would suggest emory more than cornell
yeah makes sense
by how much over 4 years
true 🥲 that’s why i’m not sure bc i think at the end of the day they would be a similar price range
over the 4 years total at least
also, what are your future aspirations
i plan to apply for more scholarships tho
what do u wanna do after graduating from either school
research scientist is the goal, might pursue a grad degree and that sort of thing
the difference comes down to merit aid at emory probs. cornell being an ivy thus only offering need-based aid
yeah cornell had a specific method of calculating my supposed efc to give need-based aid
yeahh i can probably renegotiate i guess
can i ask what ur efc is
my friend has 0 and a lot of ppl say he could get a full ride
to C
i’m not exactly sure, but it’s not 0
