Schools: UIUC oos and WPI
Intended major: CS + Math at UIUC and CS + Math at WPI
Similarities: Both are STEM based schools

WPI
School 1 Pros:
Will transfer more of my dual enrollment credits (taken everything up to real analysis)
Close to home
$20K scholarship
Already conducting research in two neuroscience labs
Easy to volunteer at hospitals in Boston etc
Sets me better up for med school (imo)

School 1 Cons:
Not "great" for pre-med (has pre-health instead)
Not Pre-Med focused, but they have the resources to succeed and slightly above average med school matriculation rate (in mid 50%)
Less overall degree value (imo)

UIUC
School 2 Pros:
# 5 for CS on US News
More prestige
I've heard it's good at research?
More overall degree value (imo)

School 2 Cons:
Too big of a school
Below average med school matriculation percent (38%)
In the middle of nowhere far away from home (more difficult to volunteer at hospitals)
Full cost of tuition

Tiebreaking considerations:
Which one sets me up better for med school?

uiuc: i have a friend also trying CS+math and pre-med, lol theyre going through it

  • i was gonna veto us for being OOS tuition but i guess med school makes those #s puny
  • you're up for some insane work regardless for settling across three highly technical disciplines
  • screw our better CS if you're aiming for pre-med. WPI seems to start you much better off. figure out ur priorities here:d
  • yeah we only have one major hospital, probably has impact on volunteering?
  • school size is huge but humans suck at perceiving scale. you don't see all 50K people all the time, you just see lots of students and that's it. certainly a diff vibe than a 5K enrollment
  • does degree "value" matter in pre-med?

  • I am fortunate to say money isn’t a problem for my family
  • I am aware of the amount of work in my intended path, which is why I have already started dual enrollment and intend to put in the hours
  • Why do you think WPI suits me better? UIUC is a really respectable college on the national level
  • Yeah I’m really concerned ab the general (relative) lack of medical related clinical stuff but also don’t blame them cuz they do so well at CS
  • the school size part makes a lot of sense, I just wouldn’t know since I’ve never been
  • I don’t think degree value matters as long as I get where I want to (med school), so I was hoping to learn whether UIUC or WPI could help me more

Thank you sm for your response and insight

from your words, WPI sets you far better for med school than we can. maybe this is more important than our better overall status
don't excuse our lack of support for a discipline for being good at CS, but for you, it's probably a tradeoff (better med at WPI or better CS at UIUC?)
this is as close as i can get for helping answer which is better for med school
