stanford
pros:
- actual humanities programs
- more flexible geneds
- grade inflation is so hot
- weather!!! just absolutely wins here
- close to home
- lots of programs i'm in love with
cons:
- linguistics is somewhat comp focused
- duck syndrome
- close to home lmfao
- won't really be a new college experience
- less opportunities for the type of research i wanna do
- can't go to stanford for grad school if i do ugrad there (at least for ling)
mit
pros:
- best linguistics in the country
- my subfield of ling was founded here --> multiple labs working on it
- maybe more genuine people?
- new college experience!!!
- in a city = lots to do and i rlly like cambridge
- harvard cross registration
- lots of friends going
cons:
- HARD
- COLD
- everyone is so smart and scarily so
- i don't like stem all that much so the GIRs seem hellish
- from what i've seen of the people so far i don't know if i could deal w them for four years
duck syndrome
not sure this is that diff at MIT
everyone is so smart and scarily so
not sure this is so different at stanford
what are your postgrad goals?
MIT and then stanford for grad school makes a lot of sense. I think some girl like 3 grades above me who was in your position and chose MIT, but she's from east coast so shes used to the cold
then stanford for grad school
big if π¬
^ very true
to me the decision comes down to college experience vs curriculum. and... no easy choices wrt that π¬
visit both schools when you get the chance (smh road trip
), maybe consider talking to current ling students or professors to see fi they have advice
a tough decision but no wrong answers
i think for mit the smart thing is mostly for math minor like i don't wanna b at the bottom of the class j bc there r imo winners or smth idk
postgrad is probably phd --> academia or maybe industry research; phd is pretty certain, career less so but i do wanna do research
stanford
yeah so i think it's almost like research/aca wise mit has the edge but stanford is better college experience i think
kk i'll think abt that
not sure math @ stanford would be significantly different in this respect
math at mit is like the third largest major? ive been told theres a pretty wide range of skill for people coming in idk, its not all olympiad winners
oh I was thinking MIT would be the better "college experience" because it's farther outside your comfort zone
but stanford has the better curric for you since you don't care for the GIRs and would be interested in more hums
i would say stanford but honestly their humanities school isn't that good compared to other schools. but if you're going to major in math go for mit.
if you're going to major in math go for mit.
can I ask how come? in my view, MIT and Stanford math are basically the same ||up to isomorphism π||
