Location/Region: instate arizona, definitely trying to go OOS. U.S. schools only please and i prefer a middle grounded setting but don't mind too much.

#cooked college prep junior with even more cooked gpa looking for ed/rd recs

notes: i go to a very rigorous catholic college prep school where most if not all classes are dual enrollment. a lot of the AP classes are locked through a lot of prereqs. i had a really bad sophomore year as well as a C in a freshman summer class which dropped my gpa due to depression and really bad family extenuating circumstances
ECs: CCMA certified, 300+ hours as a CCMA + CMAA extern at a family clinic, summer job as an MA, 400+ hours/3 years teaching Vietnamese/theology to sunday school students, neurosurgery shadow, summer program at midwestern (HCI), student ambassador, student council treasurer, 2 silver key scholastic poetry awards, 3 poetry publications
To clarify, by premed are you wanting to go to medical school?
yes!
Ok cool! Premed isn't actually a major, it's just a state of being, but for med school you can major in whatever you want as long as you take the required prereqs.
Do you meet the finance criteria to apply to QuestBrdige because if so, you should also apply through there
im looking to major in bio or neuro but haven't decided yet, probably will alternately apply depending on what school offers C:
i also do meet the prereqs and will probably try and match through questbridge!
The UCs don't give good financial aid to no californians. There might be like one or two competitive merit scholarships they offer. Otherwise if you need aid applying to out of state publics without good merit stats are very low odds of getting the amount of aid you'd need.
i have friends who've gotten really good aid from CWRU
it's not as selective as a lot of other generous private schools and you might get a better financial package than out of state publics
the premed stuff is ofc pretty good
im looking to do scholarships to clutch if i can even get into my top picks :,D
i know some friends doing kessler scholars but i havent looked into anything extensively as of rn
Yeah basically you would need schools that meeet full deonsntrated need (ideally without loans). Some that could be good options for you to consider include schools like Emory, Grinnell, Pomona, Rice, Smith, Swarthmore, Vanderbilt, Washington & Lee, Haverford, Lafayette, Duke, CWRU, University of Notre Dame, Macalester, University of Richmond, Occidental, Skidmore, Univeesity of Rochester, College of the Holy Cross
You should check the Net Price Calculator for all the schools you're interested in. I recommend starting by looking into the ones I mentioned you haven't heard of to see if you like them.
I’d recommend majoring in something else (but still being premed)
i heard that it won't prepare you as well if i don't major in bio 😭 (also i think ap bio was one of the classes i did significantly better in and scored a 5... but i know bio majors are more competitive :d)
as someone who majored in bio this is a lie
majoring in bio gives you a leg up for like 5 minutes in medical school
And for the MCAT, people who major in Bio actually have lower scores on average than humanities majors
The highest scores are pure math majors
You’ll be devoting your whole life to bio, college is the time to explore other interests too. You have to take certain premed courses regardless but you can opt to do something in the humanities or CS and be more well rounded and impressive in interviews
I'm just scared that I wouldn't be qualified for other specializations when admissions officers look at my app, since I didn't cater my application for anything related to anything else :ddd
oh
for schools that don't have you apply to specific majors you can just apply as bio
and then switch
I thought they had a the blue and gold thingie
yeah for in-state Californians
Oh I missed the "no" in "no Californians"
oops and I made a typo, it was supposed to be non-Californians
Yeah I'll blame you for this ❤️
nothing you do in undergrad will prepare you all that much for med school curricula lowk
but study what you like
