#Stony Brook Honors College vs. California Community College to UC Transfer
327 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
What do mean "high school 2.0"? If you were not academically successful in HS and it hasn't been resolved (ie ongoing medical reasons), I would hesitate to think that you would become a 4.0 god in CC as you would need to transfer to UCLA/UCSD/UCSB/ucr/UCI.
How do you feel about CSUs btw?
Oh high school second edition, not 2.0 gpa. Just got that lol.
It sounds like you have a good reason to go to Santa Monica college and transfer
My family would not approve of that ngl
When I said I’m going to SBU, my brother was like you can’t just go there when you can do CC and transfer to UCB or UCLA
I don’t really care about rankings tho
But what if I regret not choosing SBU Honors? Their seminar based courses look really interesting, there’s also priority registration, and the dorms are also good.
My biggest fear is regretting my decision.
Honors College feels like too big an opportunity to just give up
But at the same time, I don’t know how I'd manage things
Yeah you'll regret it in some ways. Imo setting yourself up to finish college on the first try is the better move, even though it requires turning down sbu
Otherwise you could just bundle up in winter. Ski mask between classes. Mittens. Study indoors.
Your health should always come first, so id go to california if i were u
As proud as u shld be of getting into the honors college, its important to recognize that it may not be all that
Does cost matter?
uh it lowk doesn't matter, tho it's not great to spend too much
this is like my estimation (I think it will be a little more then this since i need some money for myself):
- 63-68k * 4 at SBU
- 30-35k + 83k * 3 for CC to UC route (could be cheaper if I transfer to the same UC as my sibling and we live off campus after dorming for a year)
r u out of state for ca?
would u go to cc in ca
i would do stony brook
cc if ur oos is stupid to pay oos tuition at a uc
It’s not a health issue in the sense of being life-threatening
it's more like treating an injury
Oh btw I will be getting surgery next year that would somewhat restore the injury, which would reduce the amount of laser treatment I need, then the redness will lessen
under these conditions, SBU would be better right?
cuz like these kinda stuff matters to me alot
im trying to see if this could work
fomo if i turn down sbu honors
i dont think cc to uc is a bad option
but im scared that i will regret my decision
i needa decide before 5/1
Wait are you getting lasered all over or just a spot on your body?
a spot
its small but very visible
1 * 1 inch
2 * 1.5 inch
theres two
almost forgot to mention this
next year after getting surgery it would be much less visible
and transferring after a year means that right after my surgery, I would attend UC
so I get to kind of reset(?) my life
kinda weird way to describe it tho
but i have insecurities with this kinda stuff
this is like the positive side of going to cc and transferring
Oh idk I thought this was a full body thing. That's not a lot of skin to turn down college admission for.
i mean ive kinda experienced bad things bc of it
like bully issue
and shi
so its a major insecurities
It's socially acceptable to wear a mask in public now if it's on your face
When I went to college it felt like a mature and supportive environment, enough that someone's appearance wasn't worth a negative comment. But I can't say my friends and I saw anyone with a noticeable blemish.
I just hope I can find my people in college, I haven’t been able to until now
it is
😭
my brother is super worried about me going to college becuz of it
my mom wanted me to do to gap year cuz next year i will undergo surgery
but highkey i wanna go to college this year
Yeah. Hmmm. Okay there are social tradeoffs on both sides. The 4 year can be more fun but not if you're feeling uncomfortable with it
I’ll think about which option would be better for me over the next few days and then decide.
thx
yep i checked
i have enough ap credits to cover the gen eds and some lower division courses for my major
assist.org has every info you need
Yes I think having less sun exposure will be good right?
yea
if i chose cali i need drive all the time
and wear a mask to avoid sun
SBU is better in that sense
cuz the UV aint as bad as cali
U should go to sbu
Ca UV is cooked
Yeah you have to wear it in the car too
I don't think there's a right decision. Probably you'll be fine either way
id choose sbu
this is not as easy as you might think it is
also, not all CCs are the same
i heavily advise against choosing a random ccc and choosing one that actually meets your needs
namely foothill-de anza or santa monica
social life is what you make of it
if you're already good at making friends you wont struggle finding community
on the other hand if you're not one for reaching out for opportunities yourself you will have a terrible time
non engineering/nursing majors it's not too difficult to meet the requirements
Santa Monica for the weather
Tag might exist for econ or math at the socal UCs idk I haven't checked
i will say like
my friend who almost sweeped all the UCs still got mogged by ucla for math even though it's supposed to be an "easier" major to transfer into
i was considering de anza bc it's not as cold as ny and not as hot as LA (UV is less cooked)
ask me up any questions about de anza i actually went to de anza
ooh
weather is really nice here yeah
hows cupertino
i didnt realize how nice it was until i visited other colleges oos i'd say it's pretty nice
it's located in stevens creek blv which has stuff like valley fair mall, mainstreet, and santana row all of which are popular spot
do i needa drive if I live very close to the college? idk how to drive yet, so id have to learn over the summer
de anza itself i'd say is one of the better CCs in the sense that there's actual community here, like, many developed communities
im lowk too lazy to learn driving
nope
although public transit isn't as good as say NY the bus lines are still good enough for you to get here pretty smoothly
a lot of international kids also get housing close to the school, usually within a 3 mile radius
(obviously if youre like less than a mile you can just walk to school)
if i were to go to cc i would want it to be super close to the school to minimize uv exposure
but i think i still have to drive
i will say if youre not super interested in physics or engineering you dont want to take physics here, but thats the only real big note
oo i see
huh why
iirc they dont accept ap
de anza takes physics mech M 5 credit
oh
but why do you need to take physics
i thought you were math/econ
okay this ones a weird one
so de anza accepts it yes
and uc berkeley and ucla probably take it
when you try to use ap credit to match requirements you have to individually check whether the ap credit works with the school, not de anza
it's kinda bad at de anza
for reference i placed into USAPHO and got a B in physics 4B
shitty faculty?
i didnt qual usapho
wish i did
it's designed to give cheaters an edge
i just didnt like oly stuff in general
studying like nich ass cases
it wasnt for me
so one of the main physics lecturers there is almost easy for most of the class
but his final grading is distributed on a curve
amc aime moment
which means people who cheat will get an A and everyone who doesnt cheat does not get an A

we reported tf out of the teacher but they cant do anything about it cause theres no one else that will teach physics
even more context i had a 98 in the class (highest in the class) pre incident
so yeah dont take physics here
since youll be a new student your standing will be too low to have a choice in instructors anyway
are you freshmen?
i was lowk involved in hella
main stuff that i was involved in that you might be interested in is student government (you can join as a freshman as an intern), debate, Phi beta lambda, tutoring center (starting winter quarter), math club
student gov sounds fun
things not related to your major that i still did include robotics, engineering society, one of their dance thingies (youll see it when it happens), and working in CS lab and being TA
if you have questions about any of them i could answer
whats the rate for tutoring
junior
everyone who transfers is a junior transfer
electrical/computer engineering
im planning to do 1 year of cc and spend 3 year at uc
21 dollars
is that weird
you can work as a tutor or library assistant or police station
cuz im sophomore
theres a lot its nice
is on campus job easily accessible
like 40+ semester units
theres lot of gen eds
since UV is a concern you wont be doing police station jobs, but tutoring and librarian assistance probably
i will say they are still competetive
which means your math placement by the end of fall is important, the higher the better
coolio
as long as you finish your articulation youll be chill
whats like the vibe
the UCs are very very strict about you finishing your requirements though
of deanza
my brother whos at cc talk shit about the counselor all the time
like how they dont know shit
and tryna sabotage you
i think at first i felt intimidated being new to the school and literally not knowing anyone there, but honestly just by joining some clubs and chatting up your classmates youll find plenty of people
yeah
if you trust them youll very likely not transfer
😭
theyre very easily impressed by ap credits tho
i will say you do still want to talk to one to set up a mock academic schedule so that you get priority registration
oh ok
whats the highest math youve taken so far
basically yeah youll get to it when you do your online orientation
calc bc
last year
i didnt do anything beyond
nice nice
cuz im lazy
my friend who's also going to berk for math is doing a one year transfer too and took up to calc bc in high school
DEs are fun
it is like
but im so lazy
possible but
senioritis
oh nice
you need to take like three math classes spring quarter (which is right now)
at the same time
so id heavily advise taking calc 3 during the summer
de anza's math classes are distributed strangely
there are more than 4 math classes
youll have to take calc 3 and 4 in separate quarters (multivariable)
like cant you distribute it to three semester
then in the subsequent quarter youll have to take linear algebra, differential equations, and discrete math
you cant distribute linear algebra and diff eq
and discrete math is very luck based
luck based as in everyones trying to take it
but since your standings low it's hard to get that class in your schedule
i couldve sworn discrete was a requirement as well
you might want to check the school websites individually
assist doesnt show everything
which is another thing
you need to cross reference requirements
lowk the first time i heard about that class
idk anyone that took cis 27 LOL but i guess it should be easy
most cs classes are easy
cis 22c is the harder one but idt you need it
do you think transferring to ucla or ucb is better (if i do get in)
idk tho
i hope ppl in college is much more mature then in hs
would this be easier at well known ccs like de anza
in a sense yes
as a general people know theyre doing + funding is better here
courses are also usually better articulated and students are better prepped
you probably wont get to experience the difference between the california ccs but ill tell you as someone who's been to multiple
people at de anza tend to be wayyyyyy more motivated than at other ccs
i think a big part of that stems from how all the international students come to de anza and how the high school high achievers also come to de anza
bay area kids lol
pretty much yeah
are the math courses hard
i actually didnt take my math courses at de anza, i finished most of them while i was in high school and finished it up at a different cc
is it comparable to the rigor at uc
i did tutor math for de anza cc students though
oh
and from the work that they had it's not really any different
like it's just math lol
to any school besides berkeley maybe
i just know engineering math
not comparable to berk though
applied stuff
berk's math is far more rigorous simply by design
oh
Okay then so you can go to cc for one year, do the surgery, then transfer to UC for a fresh start
if youre not struggling too hard in math though you wont be having too many issues at berkeley
well i mean everyone struggles but thats besides the point
that is a positive side of going to cc
cuz i get to restart
kinda weird way to word it tho
your grades dont transfer when you transfer btw
your cc grades are only for transfer purposes
this is only really relevant if you want to do post grad stuff
but it does mean you have to lock tf in after you transfer
im sure college will fuck me up if i dont lock in
im considering going to grad school but it’s just a thought for now
i think a really big pitfall for students is overestimating their academic ability
idk what i would want to do after graduating
i think i was lucky enough that my ego did match my abilities so i was able to handle the rigor just fine, but i know a lot of my friends didnt see the 4.0 or the 3.7+ they thought they would see when they came to cc
im like ok ish
just dont overload yourself essentially
i did everything in a year as well
uhhh just try out everything tbh
dont sway yourself from opportunities just because it doesnt suit your or whatever
go outside your comfort zone
ok
btw can i dm you more questions about de anza if i chose to go to cc and transfer
ofc
thx
Santa Monica shouldn't get hot bc it's right near the water
yesterday i watched a vid of move in day at sbu and it kinda scared me...
i felt that no one would want to talk to me or hang out with me
my biggest fear is not being able to find my people
and find where i truly belong to
ok
