  • Location/Region: US schools - preferably farther away from Wisconsin but not if the prices are too insane and I couldn’t get aid. I’d be open to applying to Canadian universities as well. I would like to go to college in a bigger city/more urban area.
  • Major: Physics/Computer Science
  • GPA/Test Scores: 4.0 UW, around 4.6 W
    1550 SAT (800 RW, 750 M)
    Waiting for ACT results still
    AP Scores:
    CSA - 5
    CSP - 4
    Precalc - 5
    US History - 4
    Human Geography - 5
    Currently studying for (AP):
    Chem
    Physics 1
    Euro
    Calc BC
    Lang
    College classes I’ve taken:
    Discrete Structures
    Assembly and Computer Architecture
    Data Structures
  • will take:
    Linear Algebra
    Calc III
  • Classes & Clubs: I don’t care about a competitive environment as long as the school has a decent amount of respect and prestige attached to its name and education that would help me progress in my future career. Being able to transfer AP credits would be awesome, but if the school is “good” enough then it’s not a deal breaker. Since I have a decent amount of compsci credits through UW-Whitewater and my AP classes, being able to complete a dual major more quickly would be awesome.
  • Size: Honestly I would prefer a nice balance. Doing group work would be nice but I also enjoy being given a little more freedom and I feel like larger class sizes would give me that.
  • Costs: I will need aid— my parents will not be paying for any of my college. One parent makes ~$110,000 and one makes ~$62,000 (separated)
  • Schools You're Currently Looking At: Safety: UW-Whitewater
    Target: UW-Madison
    Reach:
    MIT
    Harvard
    Northwestern
    Boston University
  • Additional: I’m very interested in quantum computing so places that have a lot of options/resources for that type of research would be great. Networking with tech companies and/or quantum industry would be a huge bonus for me.

I will literally go anywhere that doesn’t have crazy high temperatures. I am used to the Wisconsin cold and I hate the heat :)

  • I will probably get admitted through UW-Madison’s Direct Admit program so I don’t need to worry about not getting into ANY colleges lol
#

If anyone wants to know my ECs just ask me I’m not sure if people usually include them in these

UChicago, Princeton, Stanford, Harvey Mudd Caltech, JHU (DC/MD area has $1 billion investment "capital of quantum")

#

Can you dual enroll at a four year university over the summer or next year?

#

Also, what's your quantum computing background?

@manic briar How much are you hoping to pay out of your pocket? The tricky thing is that even though your parents don't want to pay, your financial aid package will still be based on their finances (with some caveats idk how the separated parents thing works exactly).

#

You could do a net price calculator to check

#

I would hope for like $10k a year or less to be honest

#

I think technically you have to include both of their finances with some exceptions

The better the school the more I am willing to pay (up to a point)

So liiikeee what's your cap then. Still $10k?

# manic briar Wdym tuition match?

Some public schools will match their price of tuition for out of state students, a.k.a UIUC would only ask you for UW-M tuition in order to compete and attract you there

#

Okay it would appear that the Midwest tuition match program is not as strong as the northeast

#

anyway Purdue is still an amazing option because it has frozen tuition

The best books for you to learn quantum computing, even if you don't have a physics degree!

We need to train more people to think in the quantum way and understand how a quantum computer works. However, traditionally, you had to go through a few years of math before studying quantum computing.

But I don’t think everyone needs a PhD to be ab...
