#FSU (honors) vs UF (no honors) for pre-med

so im still waiting on FSU honors (i was accepted into FSU w merit so my chances are looking good) and UF EA (jan 23). For UF, however, I'm pretty much sure I'm not getting into honors because of my SAT score (💔 ).

I'm gonna be pre-med and majoring in neuroscience at both unis. Cell and molecular for FSU and hopefully the neurobiological sciences interdisciplinary at UF.

Money/scholarships aren't really a concern to me since i have brightfutures, so I'm really more concerned about which program would be better for research/internship opportunities, better classes, and resources as a premed.

Any advice is appreciated :)

Whatever feedback you guys give here I'm listening to btw cuz I'm comparing the exact same things but for pre law instead 😭 (pic unrelated)

Since you don’t know if you got into honors for either school or UF in general, I would just wait until you have those decisions in order to make a proper judgment. You should also think about scholarships if the money is important to you.

#

I understand if you don’t take my point as seriously because there is some clear bias at play but UF is generally a better stem school than FSU. Both programs are of the best in the state but we have FSU beat out by quite a bit.

#

I also wouldn’t worry too much about not getting into UF honors. It’s not even cope, Honors just isn’t worth it here

#

I don’t know how it is for FSU in terms of alumni connections, but there are a lot of places who prefer hiring/interning gators over other school’s students (that’s lowkey how it is in my area of engineering)

Yeah same

#

(sorry if I'm like stealing ur spotlight btw)

Thanks for the input !

#

yea the only real benefit is early class reg (which u can get with basically any disability here as long as u can justify your needs)

#

my roommate has it and shes adhd

warped mauve
#

Yeah I actually have that so that’s good

peak mason
#

i am too but i dont have

warped mauve
#

Yeah I have signed documentation for autism even tho I basically never needed any resources lol

#

But that’s great to know bc the early reg would be AMAZING to have 🙏🏼🙏🏼

#

btw UF is already my top choice but I’m just trying to find the most pros and cons yk

#

Another huge pro for me is the Shands hospital

#

idk how hard working/interning there is but I have a healthcare certification (phlebotomy) and plan on getting an MA cert as well during the summer after I graduate

#

Schools with a lot of hospitals and clinics nearby are a huge pro for me

peak mason
#

its very competitive at shands unfortunately

rain oar
#

I dont think its very sat based

#

Try your best with your essays and you could still defo get honors

UF Blue Key is extremely powerful and dominates state politics

#

@warped mauve I'd look into pre-med opps at both schools irrespective of honors

burnt helm
#

I would choose FSU honors because you'll generally be a higher percentile student (easier to get a high gpa) and because FSU has a medical school so opportunities for research, shadowing, volunteering, scribing, EMT-ing etc will be easier to come by

rain oar
#

Not that ive ever heard of blue key so i cant talk lol

warped mauve

#

its like NHS for UF

warped mauve
faint arrow
#

with a niche in politics and law

warped mauve
faint arrow
#

it should be stable bc Trump likes UF because its desantis's educational playground

burnt helm
warped mauve
#

Okok yeah that’s what I was seeing

sure there were cuts to projects related to DEI

#

but for instance columbia and hopkins got further cuts

in the sense of GPA rigor and everything. Apparently UF is one of the schools providing the most med students. It makes me wonder if that rigor is purposeful for med school

#

also, adding some personal context. I’ve been taking college classes (DE) since freshman year of highschool and have been a straight A student (except for a B in calc 1 and Econ). I’ve taken gen chem 1 at a university, as well as well as bio and anatomy & physiology at a cc, and I’m getting a psych AA.

Basically my point is I’ve been taking rigorous college courses for a long time and while i understand GPA is extremely important for med school. 1) I’d be transferring in a lot of credits from HS, and 2) I’m up for a challenge. What I’m looking for is better opportunities for research and clinical opportunities. Especially for neuro

#

Sorry I don’t wanna sound like a pretentious snob I genuinely just wanna pick the best uni 💔💔

burnt helm
#

Nah don't worry

#

If you go to UF I would recommend retaking the premed classes, at least those outside of your major

#

Have you applied to BSMD programs in Florida?

warped mauve
#

I would’ve for USF

warped mauve
burnt helm
#

When it comes to neuro

#

Are you more interested in the biochemical side or the cognitive/behavioral side

warped mauve
#

This is what I like abt UF

warped mauve
#

My plan is to do the neurobiological sciences IDS major at UF

burnt helm

I’m starting as a biochem major

Have you visited both campuses (Jupiter not BR), preferably with a departmental tour if available?

#

Oh yes no matter where you go, learn to use Anki, it's top tier for memorization

gleaming solstice
#

But yeah don't come to boca

#

Pls don't

burnt helm
#

I recommend getting an MCAT deck, suspending it, and then unsuspending the relevant cards as you learn the material in your classes

Yeah

peak mason
#

i’ve been there it has lots of restaurants lol

burnt helm
#

Looking at the course list it's quite funny, literally every single course has honors in the name

faint arrow
#

ts like segregation

gleaming solstice
#

Gotta flex the honors ahh

faint arrow
#

this is why I didn't apply to fa

#

fau

burnt helm

FAU is literally 5 minutes from my house there's no way I'm going to a college that close

I ain't going all the way to Jupiter for high school 🥀

burnt helm
faint arrow

good thing its getting demolished

burnt helm
#

Like basement floors?

faint arrow
#

like the bottom floor's windows see grass

#

so their room is technically underground

burnt helm
#

But how is that related to elitism

#

Or segregation

honors students work hard for their benefits ngl it’s not worth it

gleaming solstice
#

If I get into UF I'm only either gonna go Cypress hall or Keys complex cuz those are the only two halls at UF which have full sized beds 🥀

peak mason
#

well if u get in summer you get neither of those

#

also don’t do that

#

i beg of you please don’t do that lmao

#

standard people pay $2k a month to get treated like second class citizens

#

i feel that way at dorms but pay $700 a month so whatever

gleaming solstice
#

Listen, I sleep in a queen size bed at home, and I used to sleep in a twin bed, that shits TINY, I NEED my beauty sleep in college and I can't afford that big of a downgrade

peak mason
#

twin xls are way bigger

gleaming solstice
#

Call me rich kid shit I NEED a big bed 😭

peak mason
#

it’s only a problem when u have the huzz over and both of you squeeze

#

GPA is also overrated in that you don’t need a 4.0 for med schools, though

#

3.8, 3.9 is perfectly solid

#

Providing the most med students doesn’t necessarily reflect the quality of the school, btw

#

It just means a ton of people there are premed

warped mauve
#

lots of testing and information etc

marble prawn
#

Anywhere

#

Unfortunately

#

The best preparation for medical school is studying for and taking the MCAT

The guy answering didn’t even go to med school

burnt helm

"in my medical school class of 100 students..."

marble prawn
#

you’d think he’d list the actual important qualification

burnt helm
marble prawn
#

Anyway he’s welcome to his wrong opinion

burnt helm
# marble prawn I meant this

Well you can really only include one qualification in your answer so MIT alum is about as relevant as having an MD.

And he also mentioned being in medical school in his answer.

marble prawn
#

I skimmed the answer as I was in clinic

#

Only saw the part about his supposed friends

#

I’m not sure what the point of the quora post is. One guy finding medical school easy doesn’t mean it’s easy

#

Memorizing 40,000 flashcards in a year while also learning essentials to clinic and surgery and gathering research and networking at the same time

#

I guess back in his day it was more like 20,000 flashcards and it wasn’t nearly as competitive
