i think that's a pretty good comparison. but in this case, the rec letter is basically a direct reflection of a quick interaction with you the student. it's just a 30-minute conversation. if you treat it like that and nothing more, you'll be ok. don't just flex your accolades or achievements, but also don't hold your cards too close to your chest. let the conversation flow out of you. and use it as a chance to ask some questions about Rice (especially the student perspective!)

hey Marco, sorry for the wait. they're asking how much money you or your family could commit towards a single year of your education, like the maximum number based on existing bank account values. the Scholarships line is asking the amount of money that you're getting from outside scholarships for college, if any. always been required for international applicants, since Rice is need-aware (meaning that your ability to pay is factored into the admission decision). any numbers you put down will also need supporting documentation sent in, preferably in USD

i assume you mean the Glimpse video? the admission office mentioned it in last year's training. it's a paid option to submit an optional 90 second one-take video about whatever you want, that can then be submitted to multiple colleges or universities. just another way to show your personality or highlight whatever you want about yourself.

it can apparently be nice to have, but certainly not expected bc it costs money. for internationals, it might be a nice chance to show your skills in spoken English! it won't replace your English proficiency testing, but it can supplement it

If every single undergrad alum volunteered as an alumni interviewer we’d have 1623 by these numbers (which is unlikely as the alumni interview group is only 1 of 15 alumni can volunteer for to be counted in these numbers)

Alumni interviewers are assigned “up to 5 students”

They’re allowed to take on more but let’s put them all at 5 to mitigate those who end up with under 5 due to availability

That’s 8,115 applicants

The latest CDS for Rice puts their freshmen numbers at 32,473 applicants

So absolute best case scenario around 25% of applicants get interviews, but again, we’re getting that number only if all undergrad alumni volunteers are also interviewing

• the fact that applicant assignments across interviewers aren’t equal doesn’t fully help bc people could have hella availability with fewer people in a region. The alumni interviewer sign up form also implies alumni can sign up for more than just their region
