i think purely up to you. are you planning to try and request an interview? bc initial view serves a similar purpose as the interview. only difference is that initial view is something you prepare, while the interview (if your request is able to be matched) is meant to be organic and conversational. also keep in mind that your initial view can be sent to multiple schools, so it should be more specific to you instead of Rice

yes, there will be, but not in the way you might expect. the Rice Brain Institute is new and currently the word "institute" is more akin to making an formal organization of collaborating labs with a centralized power/decision-making/funding rather than something like a building or a unified research lab. Think congress committees as an analogy. Every lab that will be part of the institute will have the same openings for undergrads as they always had (maybe more because of increased funding). You won't be working for the institute, per se, but rather in a lab that is part of the organization. This can change in the future, but that's how it is currently. probably. things can still change. IDK what stage you're at but, you can email one of the co-directors directly if you're an incoming student for more information. You can also try to email them directly as a prospective student, but your mileage will vary without a rice email/affiliation. However, I encourage you to try anyways. Don't be afraid, it will not impact your application negatively.

i used to conduct some interviews as an alumni volunteer. it's pretty casual tbh. just 30 minutes of conversation with either an alumnus or current upperclassman (you have no choice in the matter). we get trained on what to note and look for, and we try to guide the conversation using an extensive bank of questions provided by the admissions office. i've done a few interviews where i just asked a few questions off of the list and we were done, and also had a few interviews where i didn't even need the questions bc the convo flowed pretty naturally. best advice i can give you is relax, be honest, and be yourself. no notes, no looking up factoids, and don't feed the questions your interviewer asks into AI. it ain't Chat-GPT that's going to college, so it shouldn't be the one getting interviewed

depends on the interviewer. The interviewer has a form which goes to the adcom that they (and you) want to fill out as comprehensively as possible. Some interviewers will just chat with you, hope that the relevant information comes up naturally in the conversation, and steer the conversation accordingly if it doesn't. Others will be more straightforward and formal, and try to get as many good answers out of you as possible.

The interviewer does not have access to your application, so anything that you want on that form that goes to the adcom, you have to bring it up. So IMO getting a more straightforward interviewer is better, but I understand that some students might feel like a more formal interview brings on a lot of pressure. In a nutshell, the answer is (like always) that it depends.

small student population is a point of pride, but it is even more so emphasized by the res college system. Each college has it's own culture and community that is very tight knit among all its members that live on campus. Some might say that it can be isolating, even. But it's not all that serious and people transfer colleges all the time for a variety of reasons.

For those that are really into the residential college culture, they have drunk the proverbial koolaid and are all in. For those that live on campus, they are integrated into the residential college culture by default since they live in it. For those that live off campus, they often forget what college they are in.
