what i once heard an admission counselor at Rice tell me (i volunteered with the office a lot) is that there is always more viable and competitive students than there will ever be spots to accept them. if Rice rejected every person who actually got accepted and took the next best batch of students, they would still be just as successful. whether you feel that way or not, college decisions are not a reflection on you. they're a reflection of how popular and how competitive the school is. i'm sure your AO was fighting for you behind the scenes. i know my friends who worked in college admissions did. sometimes, there's greater context that plays a role, and that's outside of your control. you'll do great, and if it's meant to be for you to don the blue and gray and become a Rice Owl, you'll have your chances in the future

it's not that deep. it's a tradition from back when the application was submitted by mail. you'd also send back any item you wanted in a small box of a certain size, to be included with your application as a fun way to show your personality. the Rice Box as it is now is a way to continue that tradition by allowing you to send any 2D image of your choice to accompany your application, entirely for fun. just don't do anything stupid and send an image that would make the AOs question your maturity, sanity, or general overall fit for Rice and the community. it cannot help your application, but if you do not complete it or if you fuck around and send some problematic stuff, it can hurt you
