well, young whippersnapper, there's a lot to choose from. but if i had to just go with one, it's gotta be the COVID era move-out in 2020. it was announced we'd be shutting down and going virtual in the middle of spring break. we were given nearly 2 weeks to move out (a luxury in comparison to my freinds at some other schools who had about 2days average). a bunch of my freinds had already left for senior spring break trips and they were all told not to come back and instead to head home. a tough situation but it turned out to be the testing ground for what Culture of Care (CoC!) really means here at Rice.

thos of us who were left on campus coordinated move-out efforts, packed our friends' belongings by raiding their rooms with their permission, used student gov funds to pay for secure storage of items and belongings and shipped the most critical of items (meds, papers and documents, etc) to our friends wherever they were. the university continued feeding us and looking after the big details as best as they could even as the world went crazy. every student who couldn't get home, especially our out-of-state and international students, was allowed to stay on campus for the remainder of the school year.

we all found ways to chip in and make the transition as smooth as possible. it wasn't pretty, and there was a lot of fear, anger, sadness, and many other very valid feelings, especially for my class since we were robbed of so much. but i think it speaks to the strength and character of the Rice community that when shit hit the fan, we all dropped everything and tried to help one another. Rice Owls really do look out for each other. i didn't get to say goodbye to all of my friends, but i did get to say goodbye to one of my underclassmen and roommates who helped me move out and pack so many rooms up. he was one of the last to leave campus when the shutdown started and literally was the last hug i had before leaving Rice to go home. i never got to see it, but he told me that Rice opened up in fall of 2020 and actually had an in-person graduation (a plan that was apparently student-developed and proposed)

Houston is the most diverse metropolitan area in America and is pretty freaking awesome in comparison to the rest of the state. yes, the state's politics does put a sour taste in a lot of students' mouths, but it's here where the important work is needed. here, your work, your advocacy actually matters by chipping away at things. it's easy to go to places where everything aligns the way you want it. it's a lot harder but far more rewarding in the long run to fight the good fight in places like Texas. bc that diversity means that people like us are down here too, born and raised and/or immigrated here. they gotta be protected and represented too. where better to start than in a school that feels like a bubble from the rest of the state?

the History (HIST) dept was a godsend for me. i came into Rice thinking i'd try to please my Viet parents and family and go pre-med. dodged outta there so quick bc i'm good at STEM stuff but i do not enjoy it THAT much. settled into poli sci and thought about being pre-law. liked some of the poli sci classes, but as i got into the upper-level classes, i found i was uninterested in the actual work of poli sci (which turns out to be a lot of stats and coding).

the one constant from my years as a freshman all the way to that point were my HIST classes. i always had at least one class every semester and it was the one class i always looked forward to, the only one i'd never want to sleep through or even consider skipping. one late night towards the end of my sophomore fall semester, i was crashing out over some poli sci project for a class i hated but refused to drop out of pride/stubbornness/stupidity or something like it. i had the come-to-jesus moment that i actually really loved history and that i should follow the advice i was handing out to students on campus tours and pursue what made me happy. and that was history, even all the way back to grade school.

it worked out nicely that i just clicked with the HIST profs and the way that a lot of them taught. rarely ever full-on lectures but instead mostly discussions, guided learning by committee and open conversation. smaller class sizes too, which helped build even better rapport and connection with instructors. tough but fair feedback and constructive criticism that ripped my essays to shreds but built me back up so much better. if professors at a uni were members of your extended family tree, the HIST dept was full of everyone's fave weird/kooky great aunt/uncles and grandparents. some of my fave profs had incredible backgrounds and stories (a Jewish grandma teaching Islamic history and hooking everyone up with her grandkid's Girl Scout cookies, a Chinese-fluent goth/emo white auntie who knew Asian history better than the actual East Asians did, the professional uncle who lowkey was a US presidential biographer and scholar, to name a few). one even got the necessary admin signatures and filed the official paperwork for me to declare my HIST major, because i was skipping class the rest of the day to go support women's volleyball in our first national tournament berth in at least the last 10 years if not more (thank you Dr. Byrd! best afro on campus, by far)

overall, the non-STEM XP at Rice is excellent. on-par with smaller liberal arts colleges, but with the access and connections to research and publications that allowed for more interdisciplinary approaches. it felt so organic to be able to properly explore and settle into academics that fit you in the way you wanted it to be. i firmly believe that Rice is not a STEM school. we just have a really good suit that we wear out and about, but at heart, we're nerds about everything

Social Sciences teaches you how to study people and society, how the human world works and fucntions the way it does, and how to build and fix things regarding human behavior and interaction. all important stuff.

Humanities teaches you about what it means to be human, who we are, how we define ourselves, how generations upon generations have pondered the same questions and come up with so many different and yet inherently similar answers, albeit with different approaches. non-STEM subjects teach soft skills, intangibles, things that cannot necessarily be quantified/tested/certified. and yet they're extremely important in modern society and life generally, because it allows you to see the world for what it truly is: a beautiful ugly mess, a canvas that we continually paint on and paint over, a sandbox that we shape while we're alive and hand off to the next generation to continue shaping. the skills you learn in non-STEM are truly future-proof, bc as long as humanity exists, there will always be a need for human self-expression, understanding, and interpretation
