Schools: Rutgers-Newark or TCNJ (The College of New Jersey)
Intended major: Economics/Political Science
Similarities: In-state. I already finished CC and attended Montclair for a bit.
Costs: State will help.

Rutgers-Newark

Rutgers-Newark Pros:

  • It's Rutgers.
  • It's actually closer. I won't dorm anyways, just commute.
  • There's a small chance I could transfer to NB, but I wouldn't count on it cuz I gotta also focus on the grants, don't wanna run on them. Plus, NB is very strict on credits and shit.
  • No, I don't care it's Newark.
    Rutgers-Newark Cons:
  • Pretty much overshadowed by NB.
  • Even if not overshadowed, I looked up the LinkedIn and the alumni and if you're not in RBS, some outcomes are not as good as NB.
  • Heard some recruiters diminish it and prefer NB.
  • I want to go to grad school but there's not many examples of undergrad Newark-SAS going to good programs.
  • NJIT about to beat it ranking-wise.

TCNJ

TCNJ Pros:

  • It's the only liberal arts-focused college option.
  • The people that like it really like it.
  • #1 on the Northeast Region.
    TCNJ Cons:
  • I'm not that close to Erwing.
  • Not a direct train line.
  • Not as recognisable nationwide.
  • Not a fan of the name.
  • Not as well-ranked as NJIT or Rutgers-Newark by any means.

Tiebreaking considerations:

  • Which one would you rather choose in my situation?

Addendum: I just want to get my degree. I want a good school that will get me to good grad school programs.

I’m not that close to Erwing
Why is this important

#

And what’s a rain line

#

I would rule out “not a fan of the name” as a factor

#

If anything the fact you feel the need to list it seems to me like you really do not want to go there

Should've said that I am going to commute.

You seem very rankings focused with this icl

#

“It’s Rutgers” “there’s a small chance I could transfer to the flagship” “NJIT may beat Rutgers rankings wise” etc etc

You're right.

#

The truth is none of the both have a strong economics programs, but I have to do it in-state.

Because if you’re happy you’re more likely to go in depth with opportunities

(NYC).

Well you need to drop NB I fear

#

Have you visited either of these schools?

I've been to Newark. It's funny how NJIT is more pretty-looking, but I like the urban aspect of NJIT. TCNJ I haven't visited, but I've seen the campus and it's pretty, although it's also a commuter school too

I don’t think TCNJ being a commuter campus is necessarily a con if you yourself are going to be a commuter

# viral orchid Is NJIT an option here?

It's kinda sad. They don't offer an Econ degree. I was also accepted there but they didn't kinda take some of my credits. I want to major in a social science/humanities.

Also idk how far you are from either of these

Oh yeah that does change things a bit

#

I assumed you’d be an hour max commute

#

At least you’re not driving but even then you’re eating up a lot of time

#

I feel like by commute alone unless I found a strong liking for TCNJ I’d probably go with Newark

#

Most commuters I knew at Davis even at the hour mark heavily adjusted their schedules so they only came to campus a couple times a week

Yeah. I'll admit, that I did get myself a hold of the rankings or the "prestige." I would've liked NJIT but Rutgers-Newark is a good option too, even if people shit on it.

If Rutgers Newark is easily commutable, then I'd do that. From an outcome perspective, I don't think you can go too wrong with a Rutgers degree, and in NJ I don't think it'll be treated all that differently from TCNJ.
