@cunning sable is there any risk of "false accusation" you know of at davidson for academic malpractice....ive begun to learn more about davidsons honor code and seems like the professors are really strict with how much AI can be used and what kind of student collaboration is permitted. Moreover, the honor code seems very unforgiving in contrast to other colleges...

dunno im just thinking about this really low probability yet high stakes incident where the prof accuses you for AI or a random students says you cheated on the test

all my classes thus far have been in humanities/social science and they don’t really allow it for anything (or if they do then it’s a very specific use case and they’ll tell you when something like that is appropriate)

i would wager that any class focused on reading and writing will not allow it for obvious reasons

in other subject areas it might be a different story

i have a friend who’s a math major and he uses it quite a bit for his CS homework (not to do it for him obviously)

it would be perfectly reasonable to ask your professor to suggest articles related to course material

it would not be reasonable to ask your professor to summarize a book so you could cite it as if you'd read it yourself

but really the best policy is when in doubt ask

any professor will tell you that they’d 100% rather you ask them if something is ok before you do it than you do something and then tell them after the fact that you didn’t know it was wrong

professors are having to deal with AI and stuff in a lot of different ways

for example when we do papers in my french class she has us handwrite our first drafts in class and then we do typed revisions after she gives feedback

my sociology professor has us do all our work in a google doc that he's able to monitor to see if the work was copy-pasted or typed in the document

i do still have friends who get take-home tests though

or their profs use the exam center so they get to choose when to go in and take it

and overall i would say we still get a lot more trust and freedom than is typical at other colleges because of the honor code

it’s unusual for dorms to have truly “private” bathrooms but you can get pretty close, like rn i only share with 3 other people but i know other people who share with many more. you will have to get used to sharing with people but it might not be as bad as you think, and you get used to it eventually

like i never run into anyone in my bathroom

also my RAs made open/closed signs for the bathrooms so if you want to use the bathroom in private you can flip the sign to closed and people just respect that

was a suite

with a private washroom tho

that would place u in musser or goodhue which are both ass

ideally u want to be in cassat or Nourse

so to increase odds of getting a decent dorm u can say u want to be a in substance free dorm

to guarantee that u won't be in goodhue and that u will have a much higher chance at burton, or nourse or cassat

but there will be a chance u get into musser but like imo musser is better than goodhue as the walk is shorter

grinnel was my last choices out of the lacs i applied to. i applied to 3 lacs and was rejected from amherst and w&l

id prob go to grinnell if it was the same price, but im saving money for law school and its a 13k/year tuition in seattle vs a 44k/year tuition in iowa...so im going to choose udub because i don't think my finan aid appeal will work

grinnell claims to be ranked 10 for giving out finan and and they claim to give 80% aid but they also count merit-based scholarships as financial aid so it's very misleading. they refuse to give most people aid if they got a scholarship because they calculate the scholarship while deciding how much aid to give 😭 they ended up using my own scholarship against me to tell me i dont qualify even tho their net price calc said my tuition wouldve been 18k
