Does anyone have thoughts/information/opinions on Colorado College's 3-2 engineering, or Columbia's side of those 2 years?

these dual degree engineering programs are shared by lots of LACs across the country, Pomona included. i had a few friends attend info sessions about it and tell me second-hand

theyre very rigorous especially if a college requires a certain amount of GEs on top of engineering major requirements, which are to be done in 3 years instead of 4. dont know what Colorado's requirements are for graduation, but keep in mind it is accelerated

second, youll only be spending three years at your LAC instead of four, a time meant to foster connections and relationships with your peers and faculty, i mean thats the whole appeal of attending a small LAC. to then be sent across the country to a much bigger university for only two years and to then graduate without your fellow classmates

not to say any of these are a bad thing persay, but according to the folks at the info session we get very few people doing this every year, and i think for good reason

but if your goals are to get a masters quickly, then yea this is a very viable option. just depends on your college goals and priorities, i just feel that the goal of getting a degree quickly is a bit exclusive from why someone would want to come to a LAC

To me it's a matter of

• Colorado college gave me a ridiculously generous financial aid package...to the degree that it may be cheaper for me to attend CC for three years then columbia for two than it would be to attend a standard 4 year
• I'm interested in both engineering + polisci, interests I'd love to merge
• I'd like the liberal arts experience a lot, and really like certain aspects of CC as a school
• Engineering major would maximize my options and stability after graduation

But I'm definitely concerned about the pressure/time/workload/uprooting my life a year before everyone I know graduates. I feel like it could be a valuable experience to broaden my perspective, especially because I've heard Colorado College can be a little bit of a cultural/societal bubble. I'm just not sure if it's worth the trade offs as opposed to just pursuing a traditional 4 year engineering program

Yeah, to add to the first point of being rigorous, pursuing this path will likely mean not having the time to pursue clubs or other extracurriculars, or take classes outside your major or GE that may interest you. In fact, I might go as far as to say double majoring may not be possible, or would be way too much workload.

Double majoring is already a lot on its own, doing that in an accelerated 3-year plan sounds insane

I wouldnt be so quick to assume a STEM degree automatically means job stability, the job market now is so volatile. Id think deeper about your interests in engineering, is it an actual passion to learn and understand or are you just thinking of job prospects. I feel like that former passion would get your farther, and would justify pursuing this more than just "I want a good paying job"

Fair point that Colorado College is isolated and its own social bubble. Honestly, I think it sounds like you should just wait out the rest of your RD results and see what other peer acceptances come through. It sounds like Colorado only appeals because they gave you a lot of money. But I could be wrong, Id be happy to hear out what else you like about the college. Many top LACs give equally amazing financial aid, and well their whole point is to give that liberal arts experience.

Even beyond that, you ought to seriously consider fit even if given a good financial aid package. I know people from this very server that got full rides to places and still end up not enjoying their time and wishing theyd pursue another offer.

That's a good point...there's a lot of things I like about CC, like its outdoors community and block plan. Financial aid is a major factor for me, but the financial appeal is also strong and probably clouding some of my other judgements + as you note, I may be limited in how much I can even pursue some of the things I find appealing about CC like outdoors clubs

My understanding of the 3-2 is that you normally would major in an unrelated BA at the LAC before then receiving the engineering degree, so you're always graduating with two degrees? But I might be misunderstanding here.

Engineering is definitely partially about stability and money, but it's also something that is truly appealing to me. I've carried an interest in STEM and engineering my entire life. Part of the reason I've been leaning towards engineering is actually that I feel it may be more sustainable to me long-term --- in our current climate I feel I may get burnt out if I center my future around politics. I see a BA in a liberal arts like polsci + BS in engineering as a way to maximize those options --- if I'm finding polsci more fulfilling I can lean into that, but I also see situations where I need to step back from that because I just can't sustain immersing myself in those environments. And then I have a strong major in engineering where I could still do consulting or field work on things I still find meaningful with my liberal arts degree strengthening my job prospects (If I go into engineering, it will be civil/environmental)

I still would think a lot about what youd lose by pursuing a 3-2. Remember that engineering master degree programs dont require certain tests or courses like medical or law schools do. Lots of people major in something unrelated, discover their interest in engineering, and still have very compelling graduate applications. But again, we're still early into RD so Im hoping you bag some more acceptances to compare!
