afaik i don’t believe there has or will be, i also know williams is willing to pay the $100k associated with the visa for new hires in terms of staff so i don’t really think they’re concerned about decreasing international admits to comply with the political environment. throughout the semester they’ve been very vocal about not being compliant with the government’s demands

i think in general the best way is to think of common questions

like biggest challenge, issue you care about deeply, etc

i would think of answers (prepare) but don’t rehearse

and then think about why you’re interested in the school! what makes you a good fit and what makes the school a good fit for u

So I got into Mount Holyoke through Posse. I did a group interview with the reps. Here’s what I did to stand out:

• express your interests!!! i did not rehearse before my interview. i think it ruins the flow of my thoughts personally. instead I focused on 3 values I wanted to talk about in relation to why I wanted to attend Mount Holyoke + demonstrate why I’m a good fit:

• I am multicultural (Chinese Cuban American) and deeply valued a safe, supportive community beyond the south (coming from Florida). Now if you aren’t a POC or from the south you can still emphasize why you want a safe community like MHC. You can express this by:

• talking about them accepting trans and non-binary students, being the first of HWCs to do this

• discuss how they have MANY GREAT PROGRAMS FOR DESTRESSING ;) this is a big one for me. I have hella anxiety so I loved how they have free yoga and activities in the library to chill out. It’s always good to ask questions too.

• I discussed my family and upbringing a fair bit when asked and how it aligned with my academic goals. I came from a complicated background because my father abused substances for a fair majority of my childhood up until recently so it inspired me to join groups like HIP to combat substance abuse. However, you don’t have to tie it to something so “extreme” you could discuss something more simple, but MHC seems to like when people are able to be vulnerable and constructive.

• I spoke about being an artist, for you it may be something different but knowing your passion and how MHC can help you expand on those passions is key. While I work with visual arts I discussed how I was also interested in MHC’s dance classes and makerspace!!! In essence, emphasize your passions and how the school will continue to fuel them.

I also have a lot of anxiety and just happen to love being social and meeting new people so it’s a double edged sword, but I get your lack of confidence. I also have a lot of self doubt but the key to these interviews is to be yourself and how them why YOU ARE worth it.

Just know the audience of your school especially, knowing MHC is a very accepting and liberal school gives you free reign to also discuss passions towards social justice, helping marginalized groups, why it matters to you, etc…

Mount Holyoke (Shameless plug but it is a women’s school), Colorado College, Bryn Mwar (also a women’s school), Brandeis (secular but does have a large Jewish population because of their roots so a lot of traditions revolve around that)

I remember hearing from a Brandeis to Colorado College transfer that Colorado College gave him better finaid

i'm a math major at amherst, the math department here is the largest on campus, highest number of majors, etc

teaching quality is super good and they make it really accessible

that said, grad classes are kinda limited so if you're gonna have finished both analysis + algebra by end of freshman year i wouldn't recommend it unless you want most of your math education to be cross registered classes at umass

i know a guy who had to transfer out bc he straight up just…ran out of classes to take 💀

but if you're just the typical person (e.g. i started college with multivariable calculus) you'll have plenty to choose from that will interest you. to my knowledge we place well into grad schools, a lot of math majors also go into finance/consulting (cough cough me cough cough), and faculty are super super caring

and i think we're usually the best placing LAC on the putnam FWIW

The examination shall take the form of a written or oral examination, or an essay newly written for this purpose, or a combination thereof. The examination may include, but shall not be limited to, a thesis proposal. In setting this examination, the faculty does not expect that a student’s preparation for it will draw a substantial amount of time away from his or her regular work.

A student can be awarded a pass or a conditional pass, or can fail the exam. A student who fails or who passes conditionally may be required to satisfy certain conditions or may be re-examined either before the next semester has commenced or after the completion of at least one additional semester of study. It is possible that a student who does not demonstrate competence in a field may be required to take further work in that discipline or be asked to take more time before beginning the thesis in order to further develop the capability for the sustained independent work of the senior thesis. A second failure shall debar the student from candidacy for a degree in that department. A student may, however, take the qualifying examination in another field.
