you've heard both bc there are both. plenty of super competitive clubs (like 1% acceptance rate (by rumors, idk), multiple rounds of tough interviews), but also many clubs that are open to anyone! at club fairs, you can differentiate these, as clubs that are open to beginners have a key symbol thingie. plenty great clubs in both categories. for me, Northwestern Formula SAE has been incredibly educational, much more so than classes, and it's open to anyone! you get to build a race car from scratch, so any engineering/cs discipline fits in.

also these clubs do a ton of workshops to teach you, I know members with zero experience or years of professional experience, and both kinds are able to have fun and learn nonetheless

I don't love our intro CS sequence (I hear they're changing it for the upcoming year), but I might be biased since I'm coming in with much more cs experience than my peers. probably relatively similar overall, imo your personal effort matters more than the school

I do not think it is possible to get priority registration for anything in your first quarter

Also I think a good percentage of people only declare their major at some point during sophomore year so they don't get priority registration for any of freshman year (I haven't)

It's not too hard to get your major related classes as most of the intro level lectures are quite big
