the goal of your essays should be to

1. be authentic obviously
2. understand that admissions officers are reading your whole application to try to take you to committee. they essentially sum your app up in a couple words ("here's my american studies basketball star") that makes you memorable. for some people it is the major ("american studies") because they have lots of activities around it, their essays are on it (not all of them but a decent amount that prove you love learning american studies), their LORs verify their love and impact in the field.

but there is always a story to be told, even if you don't have one aligned major

not an admitted student but some advice: essays typically aren't the place to talk about what you've done. if you do then try to immerse your reader in a story without you explicitly saying what you did (instead of "I founded XYZ organization and this inspired me to do blah blah becuase we helped so many people" you can talk about the experience of impacting just one person, the smile they made when you helped htem, how that made you feel. try to tell a story!)
