I find this to be highly unlikely, it is significantly more likely it applicants are sorted by major and then looked at likely with quotas by major not by sat range. Colleges are incentivized to accept high sat and gpa's because it raises their stats. No one here is going to know for sure though, I this this is simply more likely.

this is just not true, test scores are correlated with success, so there is a very good reason to take off the top

obviously a lower score may be overlooked if you're otherwise a strong applicant but nevertheless scores play a big factor and theyre not intentionally taking lower scores
