#MIT (2025-2026)
1 messages · Page 3 of 1
But there’s a lot of “average” people I guess
I feel like I’m average or below
There are some like maybe they win Worlds or states in robotics
Or did some cool project
I see so like exclude recruited athletes you would say average like ofc good stats but nothing to insane?
do you see any service people in there
But isn’t that not like most of the application pool?
MIT common data set says that personal qualities is the most important in considering an applicant
Wdym
like anyone who's focused more on community service and giving back to the community
rather than
academic
Yeah for sure
Someone in my entrepreneurship seminar has a non profit that empowers minorities to pursue stem
Like I mean because mit is very self selecting aren’t most people who apply have “average” stats or am I just wrong
He led the non profit successfully throughout high school, elementary students and middle students doing stem stuff
I might be interpreting your question wrong. MIT obviously has an academic expectation, good grades and involvement etc. it’s no myth that your grades and test scores will be run through some kind of “filter”
They need to see if you can handle the work first
I’m actually working on a project just like that but one thing i always have trouble is finding people who are enthusiastic and have initiative to help out, so you have any suggestions or someone else I could ask for help?
There’s only so many “academic” people lol, there are lots of leader types with service
Interesting. I myself have never done that so I’m not very sure.
Why I really mean is like what would you consider to be “average” ecs? I know you mentioned robotics and outreach but like what level and what positions?
I know I sound like I’m trying to “reverse engineer the system” but I’m just genuinely interested on what the average applicant is like and if it’s even worth it for me to try
Depends on your person and your external situation. I can’t say anything official but probably leadership, club cabinet, self initiative for a movement or project. And obvious passion for whatever you do
also, how much of a red flag is it if most my ecs are junior/senior year
People who are isef think they’re average because they think about others too much. AOs don’t compare you by region or school. They look out how you would fit in the admitted pool
(should i give more details abt that in my additional info section)
Most of my awards and ecs are junior year
Do not worry
Same
Yall spend too much time aiming your arrow you get too tired to fire it
If you don’t mind me asking what were your stats like besides academics
Just apply
is this the beaver university??
Whatever happens happens

lowk gonna put that in my quotebook brb
I did math club, tutored and captain of math team
Uh
Competitive programming club
I did some sports
Track and XC
Trained for and ran a marathon throughout my junior year
Summer research that didn’t go so well
chat are we locked in for mit
I’m assuming you did stuff like usaco and amc/aime/usjmo etc… but how do you decide what to put on? Like I have sports and research internships etc… but I’m having trouble on what I should focus on like obv I should focus the ones I’m best at but I’m just unsure
imo/what i did was focus on the things i liked doing throughout high school! no point grinding myself down for competitions i might be good at but i hate doing
I’ve heard that stuff before college applications really does boost those people who tend to do these competitions like I’ve asked a couple of other mit admits and they all said around 70-80% of admits have done some sort of comps
bro what
tTHATS WILD
NAH NAH
bro js hid a gem in casual talk
which marathon
(i used to run xc back in freshman year)
safe to say im stoked to see a fellow runner lmao
always practice good statistics! even if, say, 60% of the mit undergrad population did math competitions, maybe 60% of the applicant pool in general did math competitions, which i'd say is def possible. think about the type of person who applies to mit- probably not an unreasonable assumption. in this case you could infer there's no boost
That’s Lokey valid
Idk, do whatever you like I’m not you
Funny. Shakespeare did have a quote to let your arrows loose and misfortune or note pray that it hits something wonderful
Yall got nothing to lose applying
Literally nothing to lose 💀
they took my money 😿
Oh true
The fees
Well
I’m title 1 so we had waivers
Unfort sorry
Okay but if you get accepted
I think it’ll be pretty worth it
true!
would be a sick school for engineering
but honestly i feel like they might be too competitive there i hear it's a huge stem sweat environment
Oh wow
back when i was in cali
lowkey im hoping mit decisions come out after northwestern ED because i have a bad feeling my parents would make me go to mit over nu even though i like nu more
just in case i get into every school 😼
uhh, shoot
i remember doing it my freshman year
so your soph year
MIT ea?
yeah
oh i see
I see
rip rip
@covert ridge quick question what do you think about mit ocw?
worth studying for personal knowledge and skills?
I’m using it right now for physics e&m 💀
OCW is one of the best free resources for learning 😭
Thanks
Omg we are the same 😂😂😂 but wanted mit to come out before northwestern
That’s why I asked
I think MIT is usually later but if they do a Tuesday again it’d be same day although northwestern would probably be earlier by an hour or so
If they went back to the Saturday pattern it’ll likely be later
yayyy thank you!
gives me hope
all that's left to do is get into two t10 schools 🥹
Aim for only one and be happy with two so u don’t get disappointed 😭
What a happy milk
Tragically the milk is now lost
Disappeared some few summers ago, never to be seen again 💔
Did you apply yet
yes!
EA?
Realistically would MIT defer me from EA only to see me senior year grades? Even if hypothetically the rest of my profile was good enough to get accepted?
Did any1 here get in EA?
EA results havent been sent out yet
this was last years spread idk who specifically got in
Bro posted this on the subreddit too 💀
I think if they need to see your senior year grades to consider you a strong admit you may be cooked
I mean QB is out
lol to get more responses
those reddit ppl r scary
What happened
nah just the way they be responding sometimes fear mongering
is it gonna be dec 16
Yeah no those same 4 cranky old MIT alumni are so annoying and unhelpful on every single post
As well as unnecessarily mean to anxious 17 year olds for no reason
Yeah that’s what I figured, thanks
Probably not
The majority of people get deferred anyways
Honestly just rank whatever you care about the most
Has anybody been checking the blog for the decision announcement
i've been keeping an eye, nothing yet
decisions out december 16th
no riddle this time?
thats caltech
MIT EA Decision Date
<t:1765927680:F> in your local time zone
@everyone
Ty!
why is it 6:28 💀
oh lol
it was diff year they did pi digits
that's funny
but rd is typically 3/14 6:28pm
mk
Oh my god
for ea it was 12:17pm
rd was 6:28pm
oh maybe then
theyve done 12/17 12:17 before
Is 12:17 a special number
Oh
brown university:
3 eastern
I think brown should know that everyone is gonna be too excited to open theirs
i think dartmouth also sometimes does school day
jhu usually does too
the lacs are weird they either do super late or super early
like 8-9pm ET or 8am-11am ET
Lowk wouldn’t mind decisions opening at midnight
oh once udub did close to that
like 11pm pt or soemthing insane
usually theyre closer to 8pm pt iirc
Tau time
it’s at 1am for me
i'd definitely stay up until an admissions decision came out 💀
how r finals for u
bad
im studying for 8.02 rn
idk what's going on
im watching lewins videos as if im relearning everything cuz brooke russell is a terrible prof
fair lol
hm
i'm taking 18.701, 18.404, cc.8012 (dropped concourse tho), and 5.112
except i'm a 6-3
so
i don't know what i'm doing with my life
because i'm not taking major related classes nor am i fully GIR maxxing
dang ok ok
math whiz 😭
i heard 404 is difficult kudos to u
the only other personi know doing the 701 and 404 combo is jerry
that's wild
btw just curious, what dorms do yall live in
simmons
oh the one with the windows it looks so cool
i saw! congrats!!!!
it's alright imo. the meal plan isnt very worth it but i like having a bathroom inside my dorm
lmao
are we so deaduzz why is it the same day as northwestern
kms kms kms kms kms kms kms
we yes WE will get in
in pacific time
what a fun hour it will be for our mod team
not even hour more like half hour
i like both our columbia and mit icons and i alr promised northwestern thread the banner slot for the 16th
random hall
404 is fine, 701 was rlly hard
hi
A2C brand guidelines who
☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️
East campus!
5 days until die-day
no portal astro
what
is this about the preliminary reply form thing people used last year, y'know they patched that right?
theyre not so braindead as to not patch bugs that have been posted like 10 times over in public
it was actually erroneous last year aswell
the whole thing was really funny for some reason the applicant status update form was open early to a small subset of admits
they fixed it and made it so nobody has view perms until decisions are released
lowk just wait tho
its only a few days
more like defer-day 😭
That’s not the worst one I’ve seen
Worst was NEU EA some years back
POV you’re waiting the last few days until you expect your decision to surprise drop and the admissions office hits you with this Saturday morning email that ends with “Welcome to Northeastern!”
Note this wasn’t some accidentally mass sent out email bc a good amount of the NEU thread panicked that morning noticing they weren’t sent this email
so confused does this mean whoever got it got in?? lol
This email was the exact same one admitted students the year before received after receiving their admission to set up their official accounts
NEU admissions caught on so they officially announced some decisions that same Saturday and said the rest would come out Monday
It seemed like everyone who received the email got into an NEU abroad program and also got their acceptance that same Saturday after receiving the email
This was an extremely rare case I’ve never seen admissions bump their release to a Saturday like that
Bc at least in NEU’s case I’ve never seen them do a Saturday outside of that
wow
Anyone know if I’d be able to see my MIT EA decision on phone?
I just logged in through phone and the interface cuts off lol so clearly not built for non-PC uses
I won’t have access to my computer at the time of decisions so relying on my phone
do you have an iphone
switching to landscape might help, but if u have an iphone (and other phones probably have this option to) u can request desktop website
request desktop website + landscape should probably work
How do I do request desktop website
Yeah
in the seearch bar theres this little button on the left side
its like 2 lines and a rectangle
press that
then press the 3 dots and youll see request desktop website
Thanks
I wonder if whatever library they use for confetti works on mobile
Do ea get the silver tube at the same time as rd or earlier?
Sigh 😭
lol where did you find the 2029 server
Where
petey is always watching
Lowk a nolife friend found like every MIT related server and sent it over so I joined for the shits and giggles 💀
Petey is the main character
Also TIL that beavers will literally make a dam impulsively if they hear water
Even like a faucet apparently
Lmao
Someone needs to hit up Stuart schmill and convince him to admit the guy
wtf 😭
Cool people I guess
Ok, thanks cool person
Idk prob more stem majors
Their website says a lot about like
Collaboration
And people who like to do things with their hands
Basically what every other prestigious tech school wants
they tell you
interesting people
I know that MIT doesn't formally admit by major, but would your "pool" be more competitive if you applied into say CS vs. BME, or is everyone looked at as one?
this is a question for AOs
well i dont think this is a email worthy question lol
they probably wouldn't answer but i just mean that only AOs know the answer
my guess is that this is sorta the wrong way to look at the question; mit looks for people who are interesting people and who fit into the class they are building. i feel like they want people who are equally excellent no matter your intended major, and to me it feels like they also accept different "archetypes" within a single field. like cs has people who are more comp programming, people who are more ai, people who are more plt, etc
fair point, niche but knowledgable ig
niche under a specific umbrella that they'er also very cracked at and of course not like bots
sorely lacking on cybersecurity tho imo 😔
r u plt?
mit plt is also sorta mid
i mean those were just example niches
😭
oh
this is you
WE are getting into mit
also any intl science olympiad winner
let's go
lmao yeah kinda real
😭 okay kinda true
when they say "apply sideways" is it just like a marketing thing, yeah like be niche and cool and all that, but ALSO international olympiad
nah its either
^
u can be boring and imo or interesting af and also smart af but not a winner of big awards
i know many intl oly people and i also know many ppl who are not oly
baseline requirement is smart af
omg r u mit student
its not just a marketing thing
hi?
at least from what i've seen, the only people are actually quite interesting.
and like some (not many) oly people do get rejected
i bet you know a bunch of mit-ers
(im using an alt)
do i know u from somewhere
h u h
dm me?
nah its fine
interesting as in they are very knowledgable in something academic + personality?
if we both get in i'll dm you
😭
interesting in personality
Im trying to scope out how best to position myself for their essays
oh why so
i feel like theres people who construct this through their essays tho
i didnt ea because my college couselor didn't believe in me 🥀
'29
i will rd if i get rejected from my ed school
my school sends 7-8 per year
right like I feel when i write my essays I'm more storytelling/quirky, but I have 1-2 essays that are academic and about my resesrch
please tell me you didnt ed upenn 😭
nope
🤷♀️ i know there's some ppl who mostly construct it in essays but legitimately i find a lot of the oly people cool
but also why
oh cuz i feel like
my cousin goes to upenn lol
ah one of those schools
bruh this is a freaky conversation im witnessing
r u an nyc schools
whats ur "major"
not declared but intended cs+maybe math
i mostly know queer people/east side people though
east side?
is that a dorm
when i went to mpfg i stayed in east campus
probably not many 💀
hm cs... do u know riya tyagi
ai safety type?
yeah pretty sure
By the time they would see your email decisions will be out
Just chill
I’m applying RD but I’m assuming they wouldn’t even reply lol. I don’t plan on emailing
yeah she's tetazoo
east side refers to east campus and random hall
so basically i know gay people
PSA: your MIT decision will be immediately revealed after you click “View Update”
Thanks Chloe ❤️
east campus was pretty gay i think
lots of flags and memes on the walls
ok i know andrew carratu lives in east campus
oh yea i saw this gender ratio survey from 2020 or maybe 2021 and then
esat campus and one other dorm was a lot higher than everything else
OH I KNOW HIM
he took 18.701 this semester!
random hall lol
i live in random hall
it's very gay
omg yay lol
question for those doing maker portfolio: if i talk about an activity in depth for my maker portfolio, should still i include it in the 4 activities if it is significant enough or should i mention something else (since it would be repetitive)?
Would it have been cliche to talk about using scratch when I was younger on my MIT application
how do you know if your interview was good?
probably not
I mean AOs see maker portfolio but i think it has to be in a diff context
don't waste your spots on duping stuff unless the activity is super important
If its important to you as an activity and not just projects, then def include it
If you left feeling like you enjoyed talking with them, got all your points across, and learned something about the school/the interviewers experience
Id say those are my benchmarks
TL;DR at bottom.
Yesterday, I had my stanford interview.
I arrived ahead of time and was just taking notes in my notebook, seems a small detail but it’ll be used later on.
When he came, I shook hands and he insisted we...
Not this
This lowkey a horror movie
Theres gotta be a way to like report that
😨
this is how my harvard interview went last year
it was so funny
my mit interviewer started rambling about how the admissions office isn't giving him enough admits nowadays 💀
my mit interviewer abandoned his love of mechanical engineering for private equity and spent the time reminiscing on how awesome engineering was
apparently my area has a lot less EA applicants this year than usual (according to him)
There is yes the kid updated saying he did
Thats good
i tried to report mine to harvard (mine went a very similar way) and the harvard person told me "it's normal to poke holes during the interview" 💀
"Poke holes" 😭
my guy was overall interesting but I also found it funny that he has 3 masters degrees from top schools but then just decided to retire after doing the third masters 💀
"stab a deep knife into wounds and twist it"
Insanity
bro i was talking about a journalism thing i did, the interviewer goes ok lets see how well u do journalism, spends the next ten minutes telling me about an article about a bicycle, asks me to analyze it in depth, says everything i say is wrong for the next ten minutes after that
yes and the person i reported it to was the poke holes guy
There was no need for that holy stress
oh lol my interviewer gave me a finite element analysis question and I lowk bullshitted the answer and he was like "huh i never thought of that, might work" 💀
the guy who said poking holes in the interview is normal
i think the interview report was unusable though because an AO reached back out for a second interview
so that was funny
Now im happy my interviewer like didnt study CS and graduated like 30 years ago
bro my interviewer did his bachelors in a time when cs wasn't even considered a major on its own 💀
he did bachelors at a state school and then proceeded to a masters at stanford, harvard, and MIT
like jesus bro
Woe
I legit had no clue what to take away from that interview
it wasn't bad but also overall confusing
I think a more recent grad has the benefit of like
Giving you some tips
Or experiences that are more like
Indicative of your experience
the grad school interviewers are def diff from the undergrad interviewers
same lmao
The interviewer doesn’t usually have that much of a say tmk ik bg10 who interviewed for Dartmouth said there were many kids he gave great reviews to who got rejected and vice versa
we have one of each in our area and I talked to my friend who got the UG guy and his interviewer was very much more aware of the process
i guess thats how holistic works
my guy took notes and just stopped halfway through lmao
I wonder how much the interview does actually matter
i guess
Uhuh
Oh my goodness
Thats like
The last day I want my first reveal to be
Thats when my semester exams begin
😭
tuesday is the first day of my finals
lowk i'm chilling for finals tho
in most of my classes I can take a 0 on the final and still get an A
I have ap econ on friday that shit is fried
weirdest class with the weirdest teacher
i'm glad all my cc class finals are over tho
those were the ones i acc had to cook on
midterms for APs are so cooked, theres already a final AP exam at the end of the yr
my school doesnt do that
I mean our school we have to have midterms cause semester grades are independent
If the class is good and interesting and the teacher is good
Mine too
Honestly I've only had like two actually shitty teachers
i've had harsh teachers that basically just give you hell and then curve ur grade at the end
Macro, World Hist, and ASL and then kind of AP lang but I got a 5 so was she reallt that bad
and I honestly don't mind that
my bad teachers were usually arbritary
they had no clear expectations from us
it was entirely vibe based grading
which sucked
English always feels like vibe grades to me
But I am just not great at eng
College essays have been a struggle because of that
Why cant it be like college code projects or math functions 😞
I find it very hard to write about myself
Shoot evem college slides how presentations
thats where I get cooked on essays
I think my issue is not knowing if I want to write like creatively or just awnser the question
Also wording can sometimes be a little lackluster
especially like those "diversity prompt" things where its like "how will your experiences help you contribute to xyz..." and like all the examples talk about culture and I have none of that
I'm the most generic npc culture-void person
if you want me to talk about something I did sure but like
I wouldnt even call myself very generic and I still struggle to write about that
I feel like i kind if like over write about things related to technology/my major
But like thats what im interested innnn so ofc a lot of experiences come from that
yeah idk
exactly bro 😭
i felt like the best prompts for me were probably the MIT prompts + my maker portfolio carries
so if i don't get MIT i'm cooked
cause all my other apps are def weaker
MIT had good prompts and I feel like i awnsered them pretty good
I wish I did some more
Creative writing tho
All of mine are just like
1-2 paragraph blobs
I mean growing up I was always taught "function over form" when it comes to writing which kinda fucks me over
Telling the story / what I learned/ my aspirations
i'm very used to the idea of formal writing for the sole purpose of communication
I mean no doubt content is important
i've never seen writing as some sort of art medium
And im sure you can get it if the content is good even if the paragraphs are just blobs
You don’t have to talk abt culture
I didn’t apply to MIT but when I applied to UDub transfer they had a super long personal statement (750-1000 words) that asked for that as part of it
And I legit used A2C
MIT dosen't have any prompts of that sort
thats why i cooked on mit essays 💀
Oh lol
its all the others
Rice has lots of culture prompts
i'm sure i can find something thats activity-oriented but it'll take a hot sec to figure out
Some of yall yap too much icl like idk how people are writing double the limit for common app essays
yeah idk my commonapp is like 520 words
I write very
Legnthy
Idk

Mine varies
bro
If it’s #📢-announcements youre getting an essay if it’s a formal essay it’s short
Lord going from 1.2 to 650 was a NIGHTMARE
I can be extremely verbose or quite compact
I had a lot to say about the topic
depends on context
No thats the hard part
i've had to cut actual content at a point
like for PIQs
theres only so much you can cut fluff sometimes
😭
I wrote about like my personal style and clothing and how I like use clothing to represent myself amd stuff
once you cut all the fluff it becomes really hard to cut
Some of us use words 😝
too many it seems
why mit being 100 words was chill tho
i managed to fit it in fairly elegantly
same for what you do for fun
That was my easiest bc PIQs are how I write I can’t do the fluff stuff
MIT I was always a good 100 over (I did my essays on a document before copying them in)
I landed myself at like 400 w/o fluff 💀
Its funny cause I dont even like writing in english class
so essentially i was forced to cut 50 words of actual content
the mit caps lowk worked better for me
We know you lead a busy life, full of activities, many of which are required of you. Tell us about something you do simply for the pleasure of it. (150)
this one was def my favorite prompt
oh bro the caltech shit is way too long
I also feel like caltech leans hardcore stem in the essays too
Caltech essays have been a journey
like MIT dosen't really try to shove stem down ur throat with the essays
I think like
and caltechs leading line is basically "hey bozo talk about stem"
4/6 of my caltech essays are directly CS related
thats by design tbh
MIT I think it was like
2 or 3 of the 5
Ofc the Why MIT was stem
Uhm
Hobby was non stem
Challenge was stem in content but it was really just a club
lowk 2 of my mit essays use robotics as an example
and then all the others are non-cs except why mit
Uhh what else did mit ask for
MIT was 1.5 months ago I lowkey forgot what I wrote about
lmao yeah i had to open my doc
Trailblazing I did non stem
same
I talked about going against stem actually
I talked about instead of talked about taking ASL and getting involved in the community
I linked sports to stem
Which isnt really TRAILBLAZING but I was kind of at a loss
it was kinda like "sports (probably getting doxxed if i specify which one) taught me far more about how to learn, which changed how I approach learning"
but it was more elaborate than that simple plotline but yeah
Must be rowing😡
GET EM!
lmao i spent a solid week just head in desk trying to figure this one out
One of my scholarships essays has stumpted me
its a non-recruitable sport lol
Its like "Whats a problem in your local community/school that you can fix with comp sci. Describe the problem and the process to fix it"
Any idea i think of is gonna be like so generic/theres already a billion apps/organizations that do that
Ive been stuggling
lowk i need to lock in for rd essays
Why cant i live in like 1940s when nothing existed
all my RDs are t20s too so the prompts aint easy
I mean
Maybe I shouldnt've done all my safeties in ea 💀
Lots of times
theres a lot of copy paste
You can repeat prompts
I organized prompts by groups
and i'm writing like a few long essays for each group
and then i'll trim and condense based on the college
lowk UCs are my safety
idk bout UTA as an OOS
Atleast UT austin cant say no to me
are you texan?
ok yeah so you got the auto admit thing
i'm instate for UCs which means oos for UTA which is cooked
but its whatever
out of state
Yeah
and ofc i also just sent off GT, UIUC, and Purdue for earlies too
Wait do UCs have auto accept?
only merced
top 9% of graduating class is guaranteed at at least one UC
which means if you don't get into any UC theyre putting you at merced
cali dosen't give too much priority to instate versus other states
it kinda sucks but it is what it is
They know everyone wants to come to Cali
Texas gotta keep all they can here
For us its like
Top 10% garunteed into an UT school except austin is top 5 online
I think statistically im probably going to cali
5/12 of my school's are in cali
UC oos applicants only really get screwed by the gpa
cause they only get honors points for ap classes
oh bruh
lowkey it doesnt matter though tbh
Describes the admission requirements for out-of-state applicants.
GPA is a construct whatever😝
Honors courses are calculated differently. In calculating an out-of-state student's GPA to determine if the 3.4 minimum has been met, UC will grant honors weight for AP or IB courses only, but not for school-designated honors courses. The weight is given to letter grades of A, B, or C. School-designated honors courses may be considered in the campus comprehensive review process.
I will say GPA is a strong indicator for UCs
they lean a lot into GPA
Hmmm
yeahhh its probably cs they cant tell how rigorous the class was if it wasnt in a californian school
Without honors my grades will be
Rough
Although most of my honors unweighted are still 98+
mhm cause honors courses in cali are audited to count as a UC levels honors
So UC in states do get honors credit
oh shoot on the topic of UCs I should fill out the residence verification form 💀
they wanted to audit my residency docs 💀
yes
all my honors courses count as a weight of 5 for UC gpa
Oh yes gotta make sure youre a real Californian bear
😭
Keep this thread about mit, the UCs has its own thread
shit mb
Sorry
hello mit applicants how are we feeling 🗣️
NERVOUS 🗣️ 🗣️ 🗣️ 🗣️
The C stands for Cambridge
The fabled University of Cambridge 🥀
Yeah it’s honestly just the lesser trade tech version
Quick question are most people at MIT you’ve seen ppl who have had crazy ECs in high school like research or prestigious comps/summer programs or are there more normal ECs too
Normalize normal ECs
From what I hwae AOs will scale your ECs based off what you could realistically have opportunities to do
Like if you went to a top HS in a good tech area theyd expect it but not some normal public school
Lowk yeah normalize normal ecs and have a life bruh you don’t gotta be like cracked
I feel like research at a uni in HS is like
The one too far
Id say the most over the topic EC ill except is like
A summer trip where you like helped a rural community in a third world country get like working lights
Or like
You started your own small business
Cause summer trips are usually like a thing offered with being in like long term clubs
And a small business is pretty realistic
Right
Sometimes like the super ambitious ECs seem more like
You had someone do something for you
"I started my own lawfirm" DID YOU NOW or is your parent a lawyer and did some work in your nameeee
god bless
Wait so are MIT students like what I said or do they have more normal stuff 😭
Yeah hopefully they don’t expect that stuff from me my high school didn’t have a ton of stuff
Im pretty sure if you live in like
A normal public school
Youre fine
But lmk if someone else responds with something else cause i dont really know!
yeah idk bay area where everyone does research might have me cooked with zero research 😭
How significantly do ECs impact an application? 🙂
I think mines saved me from my test scores
what do you do in the opposite situation of strong test scores and weaker activities
how fun is CPW?
i mean idk what you mean by "what do you do"
if your applying now it is what it is
just project whatever you have in the best light you can
well i assume the person who asked is applying RD
oh ok fair enough
you pray and hope for the best lol
i thought i was done for with my trash sat and no interview requests
did you get in QB
Most mit students are chill even tho there’s a lot of unassuming cracked kids
Yeah
YOO WHAT u got in
also what’s the weight on awards / olympiads
Yeah
i have less of those my non-school ecs are project based
real
yum
Could I ask you to share? 🙏
if its projects uh consider the maker portfolio
my scores?
Yeah
any parties 😈
tbf idk if its related but i did some mit related programs like mites
Ah
Too many to count
mites boosts your chance by 5x
But please be careful
xd
Fr?
uhh the lowest i submitted was a 1270 and the highest was less than 1400 💀
This might be a correlation not causation kinda thing
oh gotchu
like it actually helps somewhat*
Did u match?
then your activities and essays were god tier
You got in, so that’s all that matters ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Ohhh
im the opposite of you im submitting a 1590 but no programs
Bruh
lol
does mit take in normall students
ive only heard my cracked friends getting in
define normal
I’m the worst of both
it probably depends on the area ur looking at
That’s because everyone only talks abt them
tbf my friends who i considered cracked didnt get in
Low test scores for MIT and no big ECs 😛
so its rlly random
I know most of the bay area admits (co29) and 90% of them are NOT normal 😭 pretentious asf kids
oh thats real
you never know
do yall know how much essays weigh into for mit
A ton
my only non-normal thing is usabo semis 😭
assuming you pass whatever baseline they have for academics or smth (?)
Thats cause its bay area
yeah idk
theyre all cracked
Essays for mit are rly important
how many mn people usually get in
?
I don’t think they admit with state in mind
I mean context wise
you can check their website has numbers
i think
someone who stands out in like rural south carolina may not stand out by bay area standards
its all context based
Yeah that’s the whole purpose of holistic
honestly its so random as long as u try ur best its all it matters
lwk feels hella rng yeah
Depends on the AOs mood 💀💔
its the lessons and the growth u make along the journey that counts 🫡
Yes
friends we made along the way ahh conclusion
yes
Lowk rather get rejected ea than deferred hot take
Chance of getting in after deferred is so low might as well just know already
(This is from the perspective of a below average MIT applicant)
Errr honestly I would reject this mindset
Being deferred means you get the chance to try harder
Whether it works out or not you still did your best
I was deferred from pton, sent a loci, and got admitted. I really think the loci helped because my stats are pretty avg
what was the loci like
lowkey doesnt matter for me tho cause MIT doesnt accept LOCIs only the FUN form i think
An update on what I did over the winter break, plus numerical specificity of the impact of some of my ECs and a really corny joke abt tigers 💀
what is LOCI
is it useful to write if i dont have any new awards, just like developments i guess
letter of continued interest
Letter of continued interest
Yeah it’s worth a shot
ah ok
im assuming that's if you get referred ED or EA?
deferred
talking about fun form before decisions 😭
Yes
Or if you get waitlisted
dude i know im not getting accepted
my ECs so mid + MIT is a lottery
It’s a chance to convince AO, show interest while they’re considering you
dosen't mit say "the fun form isn't to demonstrate interest"
"we already assume you are interested unless you tell us otherwise"
Yeah mit is a diff case
The fun form is for fun
Most ppl do silly stuff
I put a list of dumb stem jokes
My classmate put a capybara made of text
wait what do you put on the FUN form
were you EA admit or RD?
RD
you were deferred EA accepted RD?
An update on life and high school, plus whatever you want to share
deferred? (assuming not since you prolly did pton REA)
No I just got in RD
oh wait FUN is for RD too
its for first sem grades and whatever else
theres an faq on the admissions website
Yes
I feel like they are the biggest factor tbh (im not expert but) everyone at a certain level has the same grades but if you can get those grades and do other things that interest you and create something I think thats important
That being said MIT only allows for 4 ECs so they clearly want quality over quantity
I can tell you ur decision if you give me $100 and a dead mongoose
this one decision literally decides the rest of my year
i can't wait anymore
i just can't
yea i keep logging on the portal for absolutely no reason 😭
alr tell me 😛
bro ship me the dead mongoose first
935 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C. 20535
why specifically a dead mongoose
Why not
why not a live capybara
Live beaver is a acceptable substitute
hey, im a bit curious, is it worth it to apply if i have no high competition math/physics/bio? Like, my ECs aren't that good if u view it via a stem perspective. I was decided between MIT & Princeton RD.
yes :) i have no competition stuff and i got in
you can apply sideways like most people or brute force your way thru comps and apply forwards
?????? huh?
lol
sorry what i mean is
most people dont have super high comp awards
probably half of mit arent comp people
there are a handful of people who reach extremely high levels in comps and those people usually get in and i call that applying forwards bc mit is known for their "applying sideways" article
ohhhh ok thats interesting lol
surely its more than half 😭
if half of mit is comp people id be very sad
ty ty i feel more confident now, ill prolly end up doing the RD. wait lowkey the article's so funny
Live timestamp until decisions
<t:1765927680:R>
wait guys for the MIT FUN form, if my school does q1, q2, and sem1, should i just report sem1? ik they said report all but this is literally 2 different types of grading scales, which is diff from q1, q2, midterm exam grade
this sounds like an email the admissions office kinda thing
i assume they want anything on ur transcript tho
do u think they still care abt getting mid levels in comps or would they just see it as a skill issue for not doing better
i mean i saw a blog post about that actually
wouldn't high levels in comps still be "applying sideways" because theese people are doing something they love and invest so much time in?
that's running of course on the assumption that the people who succeed in these academic competitions do actually love the subject and are willing to invest so much time into it, but i do think that's true because you do really need a love for say math if you competed in usamo, otherwise you wouldn't be successful
so they really are still applying sideways because they are doing what they love and doign a very deep level of it
some people i know do comps so hard for the sole purpose of mit
of course they enjoy their subject
but would’ve never gone that far if not for comping for mit
i think perhaps this is the reason why some comp winners still get rejected for mit though?
certainly there is no "guarantee" for this university as i think they're trying to weed out the people who did it JUST for mit (not saying that that can't be one of your reasons of course)
just speculation as who knows if that process is 100% accurate though
nah generally its because they had shit grades in school or shit essays/personalities
i think that would reflect in their essays/personalities
perhaps
i think a large proportion of the people i met who had shit personalities were the type of people who just purely focused on grinding to get into this one particular "college" and that's an experience i see resembled in a lot of experiences especially online
i think that's part of the people that mit is trying to mention in their "apply sideways" article
but i mean definitely olympiads is for sure the most "brute force" way of getting into mit or any other top school
As in more than half or less than half of MIT people are comp people
MIT blogs always make me laugh when they start with like the fall leaves
LEAVES TUMBLING EXAUSTED FROM BRANCHES
In my mit app 2 of my ECs were comps
But I didnt like
Place exceptionally well
But I was the leader of both comp teams at my school
Well I Am not was
Honestly it works on me
two more days...
WE yes WE are ALL getting into MIT
FRR
but most of us r getting deferred tho 🙁
🙏
i cant imagine waiting another 3 months just for a likely rejection if they defer me 😔
Fr
Bro my area has like too many cracked Indian/chinese males
Ik a Indian guy w/ rsi living near me
i assume they dont expect you to be as competitive if youre not chinese/indian (?)
but maybe youa re if you are good luck
😔
Indian parents compare their kids as if they’re Pokémon cards 💀
Basically like a trophy collector or smth
My school’s Val and p much all of the top 10 are Indian males
They have crazy stuff like Usnco t150, USACO plat, ML research accepted to top tier conferences, VEX Worlds, etc.
A 1550+ sat is like some minimum bar
Cooked for us Asian males 💀 🥀
You either live in the Bay Area or Texas
I’m from Texas
The comp is hella bad
DFW?
DFW is worse 💀
in new england so kind of chilling
Unless if ur in MA
know someone who went there
apparently they have their own isef qualifier as to not shut out the rest of nova
yeah east
