(dont use its writing )
but if you wanna just yap
its amazing
helps me out a tonnnnnnnnnnn
and like while youre writing
because that's all they get to know about your personality
and if you get stuck you can rage at gpt and then youll be lie wait i found the answer
correct
what im trying to say though is dont force it
and dont try to sqeeze it out of you
yeah, im struggling to find my writing style
jsut for school projects and stuff like memoirs
its something i need to figure out
YEAH EXACTLY
every single person is unique enough to answer the essay prompts
it's just that many might not know what exactly makes them unique
you go through a whole self-discovery journey to answer
gemini/gpt is really good at helping with that
just ask if to keep asking questions and its very helpful
It's due today midnight, so I kinda had to somehow do it
Guys do we think I can replicate this rocket one of the guys in the club built?
Also to everyone in this channel: y'all are smart, just accept it oke? :3
surely
maybe put some micro bots inside
I mean I guess they can be passengers, but i want them to actually have a use you know?
ye
not sure if that'll be possible
Twin you will be fine
Omw to Copenhagen 😄
Anyone got ideas for a thrust landing assist system, where the whole usually burns out completely? I was thinking of multiple motors but I might have to build my own
I also wanted to combine it with a fin-based steering system to be more accurate
also what are building these rockets for
For fun
tell me the secret to your insane abilities
A lot of trial and error where error is smh greater than trial and connecting to people in my country for the rocketry, so there is some kind of "base" where I can ask for help from experienced people
real
its all about timing the landing motor
you can make a system that uses one motor to go up, ejects it at spogee, and then fires the second motor to land
bonus points if you can use air brakes or some other mechanism to control the landing so that the timing doesnt have to be tooooo cooked
I texted with the one guy who made that one big rocket and he is a mech engineer and he was able to help me out a little
But 2 motors probably would work fine too
I wish you a good night :3

yooo
mit rd lower is crazy
am i fine for MIT if i just have one b in math
this is scary to look at cuz what if im not there next year
you'll be fine :3
bro the international acceptance rate is down so much 😭😭😭😭
from what I've heard its down 10-40 percent
I know but it'll happen, I believe in you
ouh
didn't hear that
if that's true then it might be much harder now
yeah but i hope the decrease isnt that big at MIT
it might be already soo low that it doesn't change much
yeah but it might get significantly lower 😭
I don't think percentage-wise since it's already 4%. Of course it could decrease but you might not see a big difference in the percentage
but if you think about it, the amount of international students being accepted will drop quite a bit
in the worst case, only 60% of students that would usually be accepted will get accepted
did MIT release anything about it?
not that i know of
or is this generalized info?
yep, generalized
if one is lucky enough it might not change much at MIT
It probably won't
here's the thing about acceptance rates
i bet you most people and I feel this is especially true for intl are just chasing prestige or they don't have a real story behind their achievements
linear and pixel you guys are neither of these from what I can tell so honestly you guys have a good shot, just tell your stories
thank you so much, i dont know a lot about what the average international applicant has in their list of achievemens, so this is really insightful information
i hope so 😭
That is super nice to hear, thank you a lot :3
It seems like intl applicants are super competitive because of those low admission chances but we don't see all admits online you know. While some admitted students may have the highest awards and cancer research and whatnot, there are probably a lot of admitted students that are more "relatable" for us in terms of achievement, if you know what I mean. What one sees online just makes people feel like there is 0 chance of getting in because we think everyone needs to have it, despite it only being a small part of the pool of admitted people
Of course it's super hard and it's the best of the best, but we are still humans, noone should expect the impossible of you
I'm a transfer applicant so my acceptance rate is about as cooked as yours
so half of this is me lifting you up and half is me coping
I'm sure you'll get in
thanks man
true, there definitely is survivorship bias when it comes to the applicants we see online. however, it still isnt THAT far from the truth. i try to always stay positive anyway 🔥🔥
if you believe you have the necessary achievements to enter MIT then you have a chance
MIT selects people based on a lot of factors
I'd say you always have a chance
sometimes lower, sometimes higher
i don't like reducing it to achievements honestly
it's easy to compare but it's really not all of it
nah you got it
comparison is the thief of joy~
just don't be an irobot
true
YES!!!
exactly
but at the same time comparison is important to help you understand the standards youre being judged by
you can also learn from and be inspired by others
dead thread 😔
mit fell off
maybe nothing new and everyone on the grind or smth
I mean what's there to discuss
everyone is off working on their apps
and the admissions blog makes everything about crystal clear
They also make it seem like you don't need some oly medals n shit to get in which i think is raising my expectations too much 😭
U dont need them :3
Well, I did phrase that poorly. I guess what I was going about is the blogs somehow make it seem not that hard to get in when the stats kinda say otherwise.
and idk how I hold up against other bay area kids who've like qualled for both imo and USAPhO camp and shi like that
it's more about getting compared to your surroundings (e.g. school)
Compared to my school I'd say I look pretty good but compared to district hell nah
And I think it shows in the admission stats cause my school has one adMIT in like the last 30 years but the other one in the district consistently has 2-3 per year 💀
im not an admissions officer or anything like that so this is as far as my 'expertise' goes but
have you considered it may also be that your school probably doesnt have as many people applying to begin with?
No, because the district data shows that about the same amount of people apply
This is all based on the uh data provided by the district
i will say that admissions is holistic
they're going to compare your performance to your peers at your school
and they're considering you with "how did they do with the opportunities they had?"
not "how did they do compared to this kid from a private school who won the chem olympiad?"
i think a lot of people miss that when applying
i actually think it comes down to your why
more than the set of things you do
My school never even sent anyone to US ever😅
That's what I'm doing :3
Your why?
like
why do you do what you do
why are you interested in mit, beyond ofc prestige and rankings but honestly also even beyond any one lab or program
why are you passionate about xyz
i dont think i was ever questioned on why i was interested in mit
its kind of a given that people will be interested in the best stem school
i also wouldnt really say it's 'why' you're passionate about anything either; it's more about what you do with it
there is of course things like what interests you about xyz; but the most important thing is that you do something with that passion or pursue it in some way
i could say i have a passion for piano but it doesnt mean much if i dont make an effort to learn
Their CDS also says they don’t consider demonstrated interest in MIT so
not that kind of interest
i think my mindset is different as a transfer applicant maybe
i agree I'm just saying the opposite is worse
doing piano at a very high level, but not knowing why you're passionate about it
my gut says that if someone is chasing prestige (I'm sure you weren't) then it shows as a lack of depth in their application and so it doesn't show a proper fit
I think this isn’t exactly the issue
There are many people who will apply to MIT simply cause it’s prestigious and can still show depth
i am confused with the website for applications to grad applications.
i can find two, and both of them are pretty different
interested in computer science
I meant masters application here
can anyone help
first link is the eecs phd program
you need to apply to the phd program to get that
brotha its literally on the website
you didnt even read all the boxes
holy fuck
oh yeah just read carefully about A terminal master's degree is not offered
i was like this is just meng or phd
sorry about that!
how relevant will this be if i wanna do CS. preferably in AI or smth similar?
is there any reason to add the recommender from a research portfolio in the main application if one was to submit one
hm like i have one added to the reseach portfolio in slideroom, but theres no point in also adding that one to the main app right
i have a more tuff idea
kilo electron volt
KeV
hehe
also speaking of research portfolios
i am doing a project but because I didn't join a program and I couldn't find a mentor I've been doing it all on my own. i have a couple of contacts/people who have given me advice from time to time. would it be ok to ask them for a recommendation or does the mentor have to be someone you contacted a lot and who has worked with you for a long time
guyyyyyyyyyyyys
there is another university nearby and they have multiple tech institutes all over the city, most important for me is the IAT, the Institute of Aerospace-technology
I'm currently trying to connect to the profs who run the institute itself and if I'm lucky I would be able to use their labs and equipment for my rockets
and they are actively building low speed rockets(only 1.2 Mach) that aim high as testing rockets
and it would be amazing to be part of that
not quite sure about that, it usually should be someone who knows you and your passions, the person isn't writing about your results or you as a generic person, they are writing about what sides they got to know about you, how they were able to see the will and passion to do things very clearly
it's less about what you have achieved, but more about what kind of person you are, because it's important to get the view from others, since they don't really know you yet aside from your essays
of course your achievements are important too, but I think it's mostly about you as a person and your way to greatness
instead of the "finished product" if that makes sense
i know that's for general recommendations
but I'm asking specifically for the research portfolio one
I would assume the same tbh
hm w/o the email?
sure!!
nah the same one from the slideroom
yeahh
ohh
the normal admissions readers can still still see the slideroom one tho right
iirc the admissions readers don't ever see the portfolio stuff directly
they just see the portfolio reviewers report
Do not pu in this twin 💔🥀
:D
should i rank them through qb as a stupid person
does mit not have a personal statement
hi guys
question
if i have to schedule mit and harvard tours for the same day
which one should i do before and after
Harvard after cause mit is ugly as shit
mit is fineee
i have the same problm
my GUESS********* is that because they let you yupload pdfs thats what they want
but i have no idea
no I mean
put your images as media like usual
and you can also upload a PDF of your writeup
don't quote me on that
this is my first time applying so no
make ur own portal that’s why it’s called the mit makers portfolio duh
make something
True
Make something your own
I do my rockets
And currently also a stock trading algo lol
And some robots
You don’t?
If it was the summer before for hs credit just put 9th
Otherwise ms ain’t relavent
no like it shows up on my transcript as a high school class
I’d just call admissions and ask
High school credit courses are pretty common i’d be surprised if they didnt have a plan for that
And it’ll probably just be “mark it as 9th”
Well I have hs credit courses from ms and they’re not on my hs transcript
Do you use infinite campus per chance?
Check with your school to see if the sealed transcripts include them
no
does anyone here applying to MIT know if there is a grace period for recs to be submitted after the EA deadline?
i have that shirt in black
Big College doesn't want you to know this, but MIT isn't actually real, it's just an illusion
MIT is GT north campus 🤷♂️
Its true 😭
with the MIT application I'm a bit confused with the "adding recommenders" section. Since my school uses Naviance for recommendations, do I need to send the recommenders a request with the MIT app as well? Or is it fine to leave empty as my counselors will be submitting them via Naviance.
For additional transcripts does my school counselors need to upload them or can I send them in via parchment
For summer classes n stuff
you need to add their emails in the mit portal
mit's application portal isnt affiliated with Naviance
if they're CC you have to send thru parchment
if its classes from ur high school ur counselor should do that
am i cooked if my sat is below a 1400 😦
Lowk yes
0 chances?
What math score
730
Hey I need advice for MIT.
So my grades this year are super strong especially compared to last year (from like a 15.5 in spc to a 17.33, from a 16 in math go 19, all out of 20 in the french system).
I was gonna apply EA and I have everything ready, but because I wont get my 1st term transcript by nov 1st I was wondering if it would be worth just holding off until january?
Do you think it would make any significant change to my application? In also banking on keeping these grades so if anything happens in such a way where I have a bad exam for example..
If you keep those grade up, it shouldn't make a difference, other than MIT asking you to submit your final grades if you get accepted
Looks like a nice upward curve in GPA, good job
maybe my ecs will make up for it 😔 never know until i try
is a 3 in physics c too low for mit
LMFAOOOOO
is it too low tho
frog is fed up w echocharlie

Also is it intentional MIT dosent have a 9th grade checkbox for activities
For MIT, will AOs look at the research supplement or is it sent to professors?
Also, if the research supplement is sent to professors, are they able to see my general MIT application?
uh theyre sent to "qualified experts" to quote the page
and said experts will send their notes to the AOs
they don't see your general application and AOs don't directly read the portfolios
No 👀 depends on your circumstances though
I can say that admissions officers will be aware of what your supplemental submissions are
I dont think the people reviewing your portfolio see your admissions information (ferpa?) but take my word with a grain of salt since idk
Some of the AOs I’ve met have remembered my (visual arts) portfolio so they definitely see it
Take this with a huge grain of salt because I dont know ANYTHING about international applications, but there should be a section where you can explain circumstances like that; Im sure they’d understand especially because you cant control your school’s transcript
Thank you for the help!
Do the people reviewing the portfolio give written feedback on the portfolio to the AOs?
I think they give a sort of tl;dr and their opinions
I see. Thank you so much!
For my why major essay, I spent half the essay talking about how I got interested in my major, and then I talked about specific courses and research programs at MIT I wanted to do. Is that good? I shared the essay with my dad and he said research opportunities exist everywhere and you didn’t say why you like MIT. So I’m really lost…
Also that essay has a word limit of 100 words so it’s not like I can go into too much depth
Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)
I didnt mention MIT once in my ‘why major’ essay lol
They are interested in hearing you talk about what struck that passion in the field for you
Your dad is right that research opportunities exist everywhere; which is why it’s more important that you talk about why your major is special to you
Thank you!
AOs already know that MIT is a great school, your essay isn’t about convincing them of that; they know you want to go to MIT because you’re applying (and most people dont ‘throw’ apps at mit) :)
Yea fs twin :3
I talked about hoping to work on a project with a specific professor, is that good?
Also, is it good to mention famous MIT alumni from my intended major?
No idea Im not an admissions officer, this is all subjective haha
No worries, I appreciate all your help :)
I think im gonna stick to RD, just because its better to give them the better trimester grades than just saying "im getting better grades this year trust"
isn't the prompt literally "Tell us more about why this major at MIT appeals to you"
Yeah but you don’t need to insert some random MIT thing that correlates with your major
You only have 100 words, and the aim of this question is simply for MIT to see why you’re interested in your major
Hmm I feel like that means “this major is at MIT; why do you like the major”
But thats my own personal take 🤷♀️
Yeah in my personal not-AO opinion I dont think they want to hear you name-drop some random ass professor you just looked up in their major
Like I said earlier it’s probably a given that you want to study at MIT lol
anyways gorgeous ass school
I'm applying rn but the way I approached is why do you want to study this at mit
so I talked about a project I did on my own and how I want to expand it with the help of a specific professor
I feel like it's structured that way too, i've seen both responses
didn't they pose those questions like this to leave room for interpretation? I think that was noted on the website somewhere if I'm not mistaken
AFAIK yup
i would hope so
Methinks this goes for most of college apps, to a certain extent answer the question you want to answer, not the question they ask you
obviously you can't be completely unrelated but the room for interpretation is important
Thats why Im saying to take what I say with a grain of salt :-) theres lots of interpretations and Im sure there’s plenty of people who got in that took it one way or the other; admissions is not secretly saying ‘we are looking for everyone to answer it like this’ despite how it feels
8.01 exam on the 6th 😭
8.0fun or so I've heard
Hi guys i was wondering for the mit 100 why this major at mit, could i give like a quick context of why i came to the major but dont know what exact career i want to go into with this major yet (ee is kinda a broad major) and then the other half on why mit will perhaps better help me prepare for career exploration on this major compared to other schools
Clicking the "submit" button has no reason to be this stressful
do not spend time glazing mit lol they know
wait but I can mention a specific prof right
that's not glazing is it
that's the point
if you can't explain yourself concisely do you really know yourself
if it's not then you're doing it wrong
so that prompt says "one question"
surely one question isn't an entire paragraph
does it really say one question?
I'd have a ton
If you could ask an expert in the field one question to help you grow or to improve your work, what would you ask?
this is the q
and you have 300 chars
So should i focus more on what led me to this major or what i will do at mit in this major and how they will support me
you can do either, but I wouldn't recommend both because it's only 100 words
it says one
literally had to read it twice
Ok cause majority of mine is how i came to this major and one sentence with what i will do at mit but idk if its too general and something i can do at every other school
(I'm a current applicant and this is the gut knowledge I'm using, it might be horribly wrong)
makes sense but then 300 words is okay imo
300 CHARACTERS
that's more like 50 words
This supp is too much
i would go all in on how you came to it and not mention mit then
people have said that you can interpret the prompt both ways
which is fair
but don't do half n half
yeah that's why I said 1 question
fair enough, one longish question would actually just fill this right up with some addons
i would ask a simple but non trivial question
yeah
I mean if there is an expert in the field there then I'd like to ask a less simple but more in-depth question you know?
trivial is like "how do I find better PID gains"
mmmm
you don't have to
i mean your choice but I think the prompt is more about seeing how you think and not what you think
the nature of your question can say a lot more than the question itself
I just fear that "simple" questions often are the same as trivial questions, that's what I'd worry about
luckily I'm applying next year
then change your role to junior
I'm in the last year though
so are you taking a gap year
I'm applying after graduation because it probably is much better for the application
yeah
sorry I don't know how German school works 😭
dw
we have 12-13 years, I have 13 but I think that my application would be much better after graduation
from what I've heard
didn't do it yet
I heard a lot of people are also applying right now for next year
o ok
nvm seems like we actually do it pretty similar to the US
but we have different semesters
anyway, I just thought having more time to refine everything and do a little more would help me a lot
since I probably started worrying too late about the really good schools
Does anyone know if I can submit my application before my recommenders have sent their LoRs or do I have to wait for them
I’m confused cause they are both due Nov 1 but I won’t even know if recs are sent or not until 2 weeks after I submit as that’s when they say I can see my applications
Which weird cause everything is due Nov 1 for EA….
I think you can submit it beforehand but I would wait
yes iirc. the recommenders should get an email to submit on their own so its independent of your own app.
lmao thats the only one i thought was way too long
mine's like 77
but something like "What have you made that holds the most personal meaning for you, and why?" being only 300 kinda limits me on how much I can explain why
i figured it out tho
enough
why does the application portal log me out every time a look away 😭
me personally I did struggle a bit on this
but what I did was to pick something more emotionally grounded than technical
it's sometimes easier to express an emotional value in a small space imo
yeah I did the same
i just chose a project that held a lot of sentimental value to me
technically it wasn't the most impressive project on my portfolio
lets go chat i submitted
meanwhile me submitting my maker portfolio rn
(my entire app is done i just gotta get the balls to press submit, its also cause i wanted to submit it after i finished maker portfolio)
my app is due March 1 cause I'm a transfer
I'm only submitting one project which is a tvc rocket I made with some friends
what about you
Yo you do rocketry?
Fire
One of my maker portfolio projects is a flight controller board lol
noice
It’s technically TVC capable but was made for servo-based airbrakes
it has enough exposed PWM pins for TVC tho
I'm a cs major so I did the PCB design and all the coding
Also CS and ditto except I also did the air brake mechanism design
Wait March 1st for transfers is crazy
When do u get your decision
may
that's cool!!
personally I don't think having many projects in the portfolio is a good idea
maybe I'm coping cause I only have one
but I feel like dedicating the whole portfolio to one project lets you really go into the nitty gritty of it
Well I think I covered excessive detail of 4 projects 💀
Like there’s excruciating amounts of detail
Taking advantage of the fact pdf uploads are a thing
I'm withdrawing my app /s
bro they ain't reading allat
i was joking
That’s what I assumed
I wonder how many EA kids would’ve submitted a maker portfolio
my project is a physical rocket
so I'm gonna be submitting pics of those
but to show my work I might post simulation diagrams, data plots, PCB diagrams
maybe for your project make a diagram of how the conpliler works?
or show your game
oh true
None of my projects are really documented so I didnt
if anyone is submitting mit research supplement are yall also stuck on "Please wait while we verify your payment information."
yep, it was just my computer haha
It’s the same. It’ll have a status update and you see mini Tim confetti if you got accepted
you’re welcome.good luck
good luck to fellow mit applicants 🙏 we will cook
i have 4 months to submit why am i stressing 😭
wth
im applying for transfer
im also like
insaaaaannnneeeelllllyyyyy sssssllllloooooowwwwwww
my entire school list is 9 schools (ucs count as one school) and ive been working on essays in some capaccity since june
to be fair i didnt work on essays every single day for 4 months but still
real im also hella slow
most of my deadlines are in 3 or 4 months but I don't wanna scramble like all the freshmen
I don't believe in shotgunning either
oop-
oop-
idk that's just me
im cooked
delete the m
yo
huh
I'm cooked → I cooked
lol
🙏
LMFAOO
ok mr c compiler
Mariel is the goat
(They’re the same person who responded to all my emails and emailed me abt smn)
any current mit tech students interested in joining me and another wellesley student for an international innovation competition?
wait is this fr??? last year it was like 1200 characters bc i remember my eyes buckling to the back of head seeing that huge ahh word count
some of them are
lemme find which ones
What have you made that holds the most personal meaning for you, and why?
What motivates or excites you about what you make?
were both 300
oh ok yeah it was probably 300 last year then
nice
My friend shared me his maker portfolio from 2 years back and yes there were some longer questions that they split up
they split up the longer qs into multiple shorter ones
bro going on a world tour
i see
damn
Touring?
ya
most likely not
no
no idea
ahhh im so nervous
Do you guys think MIT is good for a poli sci major
Who wants to look at the quantitative side of things
Like I know it’s an exceptional poli sci program but is it weird to not be an engineering major at MIT?
its not weird there are a few humanities majors here
I heard from a student at MIT that MIT interviews don’t really matter at all and it’s just way to make alumni feel involved
Is this true? Cause that contradicts what the CDS (which labels the interview as “important”) and what I’ve seen online
i mean i would follow what the website says rather than what a student says 💀
It would just be disappointing yk
Student said they heard that from the admissions office
No but I want it to at least be considered for my app cause my interview went pretty well

A negative interview could affect how the office sees you, but people have gotten in with negative interviews; this and vice versa
Its expected that you’re going to be nervous, I dont think that would ever really affect you; as long as you dont show up and start belting slurs or something, at the very least the interview will probably be neutral
Anyone here know how the MIT overflow system works when assigning interviews?
bump
bump 2 😔
lol
is mit rd skull?
lol
ik what he meant
going to ask soon™
found it (for those who are interested)
https://alum.mit.edu/sites/default/files/2021-08/Overflow - Presentation Aug 5.pdf
lol yea but its fun to learn about these things as far as im concerned
never hurt anyone
Well yeah same philosophy here
There are people who will try to read into it too much
there is also this i found:
https://alum.mit.edu/sites/default/files/2021-07/EC Presentation 7.22 Reduced_0.pdf
war stories for a reason LMAOOO
well it started with just weird stuff and then.....
Thats just life
agreement with other colleges is interesting tho
thank god its not happening anymore
do they have like a "don't convince them to not harvard" pact or smn
Mom is pretending to be the applicant.
I've heard this one before tho
hillarious shit
i assume so but i can't find any info abt it from the quick google i did
quick question for submitting SAT
should i submit a score where i have a horrid maths mod as additional score
but rw is 750
math is like 740 there
or should i js submit my raw 1500 with 790 in math
they pick your highest subscore but you submit all
This plush toy is a small (6-14 in) brown Beaver from the Mascot Factory brand. It is designed as the MIT mascot, suitable for children aged 4-7 for a birthday occasion. Why is he on eBay
gng
im deadahh
confused
about the field of study i should say im interested in
my ecas are mostly compsci - sommunity service
but i lowk love eco
also confused on how to approach the why this subject at mit 😔
mit doesn't admit by major
and the major you select is not linked to your actual major because you don't declare until your second year
the prompt can either be taken as "why this major" or "why mit" but it might be best to integrate both
ofc you have to do it in a summarized way because it's only 100 words
It's important
are you trying to kill the competition by making them use your software
so they can't apply
this is literally so funny
This is crazy work
Guys
It's pretty broad question
But like... What would you recommend while writing supps for MIT?
Cuz all I heard for now is mentioning my accomplishments and projects I simply didn't have
well im no person to give advice but just prioritize honesty
what projects have you done? i think you should focus on what you want mit to know
you dont need to show crazy projects, but instead focus on stuff that align with the college
'mind in hand' or sm
where you show that youre smart and can actually put that 'smart' into play
intelligence oriented action
doesnt needa be big like proving string theory
maybe solving a household problem with maths or physics
theres so many kids with incredible accolades who get rejected, so why you? tell mit what passion you have, and how you have gone about getting that (no matter how large or small).. at the end of the day you need to show mit that you wanna use stem for the greater good, and that typically happens nicely with a passion you have, no matter how large
i second this
and im afraid even with the most genuine passion, mit is just so selective that kids with 2 olympiad medals and research get rejected.. so keep you head down and just try your best.. even if you get rejected, the passion will still be reinforced, and honeslty if you go abt you passion even after mit rejects you.. well thats mit's loss
what unique views do you have on life given your experiences and how can you use those to improve the community
preach
but also olympiads aren't everything
just because you did crazy research doesn't mean you'll be a valuable addition
yeah exactly, thats why the passion thing is so important.. it makes you look human and not like a resume
the olympiads winner still has to prove that their olympiads win will help them make a difference
well not really? the typicaly advice for such apps is show the passion you have, so it gets cringy but really true for a lot of these kids (they just genuiely love phys (ipho) for example)
and they wanna study phys, so they talk abt reasearch they wanna do, so ya
but thats a bit of passion too ig
thats the angle most ipho kids take.. ik a few so yeah
I'm just saying like just having an olympiads doesn't add much
cause think about it this way, if they admit 20 olympiads winners what new perspective do they bring
yeah ig thats true as well
its just that i know a lot of ipho kids, and typically they are the only kids who get in (intl) like from singapore, germany,
but thats also speaks to how selective mit is ig
good luck!!!
tnx
Wdym
I don't rlly have a project like building smart gloves or anything
In fact, I don’t think anyone from my country has a possibilities for that
I ask this with as much care as is possible over text
what do you have that should make mit seriously consider you?
if you don't have projects or other ways of demonstrating your passion, even if you literally couldn't do them, the reality is that you don't have evidence
I made a lit of difference to my school actually
Even with the resources I had I placed a lot of projects
Raised money for the army
Have some national awards
that's excellent!!
definitely show that on your app
just try to connect it to a larger perspective that you bring to the university
I'm saying this cuz I'm miserable, but not to the degree when I can't show reasons why consider me
Yea, I only wonder abt supps, since most of the advices r for engineering
what's your major
Like "mention smth u built"
mit is an engineering school first and foremost
yes they have Sloan but you still have to do science and math
With one of the best business and economics in the world
I don't mind it
great
Like I'm not saying I hate science
so just like how engineering people say to show thinga you built
I'm just not an engineering major lol
Alr bet
I would argue you have an easier time because your things are directly linked to real impact
I like kinda helped my friend w his orgo based on Rotary
engineers build stuff for fun
I mostly just made projects for my school
Like week of business
Or applying abroad
So students were basically researching the topic
Presenting
And then asked questions abt their fields
For instance, one group may have been investigating whatever is demand and flexibility and how it affect businesses
And the other what fields are out there to base your business on and what's their pros and cons. Like how restaurant may be invaluable to bring up new tastes and be an actually good investment, but rlly based on the place and be in a hella competitive field
And etc
So yea, I brought up my silly ideas and administration was like ok
Mb I will mention that
yo send me this and i'll add it to all of my projects
I wish this was legally enforceable but it would obviously fall outside the bounds of reasonable clauses
make one with the mit license
All my projects are MIT license lol but it would be funny if i interjected this line into one of them
"by accepting the terms of this license you grant the creator and distributor of this work audomatic admission to the Massachusetts Institude of Technology"
This is so random lol but I love your display name and username 😭 Varenyky and pelmeni are amazing 😂
It was the 15th last year IIRC
anyone else matched with mit through qb?!
Anyone submitting a portfolio for photography?
congrats!!
I think it will be 13th this year, but they release the date a week before
What makes u think that?
Thank you!!
Can someone pls help? I need to polish them for sure
yea what do you need help with
specifically
prediction for ea decision dates anyone
Its always that middle of december weekend. On past years its been the saturday around that time, e.g the 15th, the 14th, the 16th
that saturday this year happens to be the 13th
so my guess is that saturday
Please does anyone have an idea when mit would be out 😭
Oh wow I didn’t read the above messages 😂
I really do hope it’s Saturday
Interesting
I did nothing that crazy
Like I barely did ec and major essays
Now I'm stuck at what unique I did in my educational journey
Stuck idea wise or continuing an idea?
Stuck
Like I have been brainstorming ideas all day now
"the prompt is always optional"
💀
which is to say do like me and ignore the educational part
Educational doesn’t have to be school
It doesn’t even have to be like a big shift
It could be an extracurricular
To be fair I can’t provide much help because I wrote about high school since I did something very unorthodox
mine was about the number of times i got bailed out by others
And it got placed on a hallways
Yeah I mean you could talk about that initiative
I mean I'm trying to think out of the box
yea doesn't sound good when you say it like that but the point is it truly doesn't matter what its about
But nothing that crazy
Or for my math project I chose not the theme teacher suggested, but golden ratio and studied how it is used in both architecture and nature
Ok, I just thought that mb that's too cliche or sum
It’s not cliche until you write it
However, my second rival is an unexpected challenge essay
Think abt how many essays there are of people talking about grandparents or a relative
It’s cliche
Yet there are unique essays
That got them in
just do what you like don't think about being unique
I mean I can't write abt how my diarrhea forced me to stay at home and take my exam later
I'm trying to say that I can't talk abt smth too cliche
Or that I encountered some gard math problem
cliche depends on what the goal of the story is
lol
I wrote about cooking
focus on why this experience is important to you
Or sports injury
It wasn’t even a recent challenge
Like I'm trying to figure smth out
I mean
I cheered up my family while we were near the active combat zone
Yeah if you’re writing it just to complete it, I don’t think that topic would mean a lot to you
And I couldn't study
Does this mean a lot to you?
I'm thinking what would be a good thing to write
Do you feel proud/passionate talking about it
Yea, but I alr used it in community essay
And yes, it is hella important
A lot of people are. That’s the process of writing these essays
Unexpected challenge you say...
if the story means something to you
A tough one ngl
if it really is important enough to warrant a second essay then go for it
it usually isn't unless there is truly that much to talk about
Like that was a big shift in my personality I think
I stared at my doc until the morning it was due lowk
Don’t panic too much at this moment
Like when we get out of there I was a completely different person
then for sure talk about it
but talk about it where the emphasis is not on the moment, but why that's important to the prompt
I applied to 25
In one week
Because I stared at the docs for 4 weeks
Man r u cyborg or sum
i applied to one and now have no motivation to apply to anything else 🥀
No I’m just lazy
That's a good one
I played too much Fortnite
ew
I love Fortnite
If ur stuck on mit why not move on to another school
I heard there's a MASSIVE ukrainian community at MIT
Maybe a different worded prompt will spark another idea
There’s a lot of Ukrainians
I'm talking like 3rd biggest after indian and chinese
I know 2 people that are Ukrainian in my dorm building
I heard like there's approx 40 ppl a year admitted
how diverse is the indian community at MIT?
But they’re like US
Ye I'm cooked
There’s a good amount of Indians
I'm int soooo
They’re both from States. Ones from Chicago, dunno about the other
I stayed in the country all the time
Oof
So mb I'm different
Yea
Int rate is rough
ah. any idea on the state spread
i assume not
I alr lost as an int
no wait i meant indian state but interesting
Ohh
lol
Sorry I don’t know much about India as a country
But Ig there's a lot of ukrainian ints
all good lol that's what i assumed
Most ints that I meet have a medal
its over
where the rescind app button
That’s good
should've applied somewhere else 🥀
Basically we don't have any offline olympiads as far as I know
Or any international olympiads teams
Oh true
No research opportunities
They need to consider your situation
So I tried to figure smth out
But mb I'm hella wrong
Cuz I asked my school if there's any offline national olympiads
And teachers said hell nah
learnt what an olympiad was senior year
MIT didn’t let me see my final submission so I only have my drafts
My latest draft is closest. I read it again before I flew here and thought abt how much of me I showed
Your essays really have to speak YOU. Like someone could feel that you wrote it without seeing your name or anything
dont most admits get in despite their essay
hmm
idk about that
unless your accomplishments speak for themselves
cause MIT's CDS says that personality is extremely importnat
even above academics
it's the only quality catagorized as "very important"
fair but counterpoint: you are the least trustable source about yourself
lor's and interviews make much more sense
Interviews aren’t a big deciding factor though
Neither are LORs
Those two sources are to confirm that you yourself are telling the truth
AOs care how you represent yourself
Sorry typos
i get that but a lot of people can manufacture the persona a college looks for
few actually have the qualities they want
You can say the same thing for lors and interviews
fair point
Wait really?
I thought LoRs are a pretty big thing MIT uses to gauge your character
I’m lowkey worried my recs are only mid cause my teachers had to write for so many students so they won’t help my app
my reqs i think were okay
LORs are just a way to gauge that your reputation with teachers and at school is beyond just average
its important that they're good but it's not a deciding factor
moreso a make or break in tough decisions
Yeah fair
Same, the two teachers I was the closest with that I chose for recs are lowkey pretty popular teachers to ask for recs for at my school so idk
Gonna just hope for the best cause I can’t even see the LoR lol
unc js do ur pushups 😭 🙏
@covert ridge how are you liking MIT so far?
Thank you!!
Great! The work is definitely roughing me up a lot. Unfortunately I carried some bad study habits to this school. Luckily the first semester is PNR so I get some grace. I’m struggling tons but learning tons. Boston and Cambridge are really fun, I’m sure you’re going to make great friends and great memories within your first week here I’m sure of it. I’m open to DMs if you ever wanna send questions or a short call. :3
Thank you for responding! I’ll prob dm you with more questions lol
Considering you got into MIT I'm assuming you got pretty good grades in highschool, so what changed with the study habits?? Procrastinating?
I just procrastinated a lot throughout high school which didn’t work here. Learning things here last minute is so much more stressful
What are you planning on majoring in?
6-4
Can I ask what classes you are taking (more math than anything) and how your hs classes prepped you for it? Like if u took AP do you feel a big difference between 1st year courses or is it somewhat okay?
its definetely not unlike ap classes, but there is a lot more learning on your own compared to high school. Im essentially taking math+cs class right now. physics e&m, lin alg, algorithms, and fundamentals of programming
they typically announce which date they're going to be releasing decisions about a week before
Idk if this has been discussed before but when does everyone think decisions are coming out? Personally my guess is the 19th but it’s totally random
Although I’m like 95% sure it’ll be that week
How much time do I need for MIT
Assuming I'm not like reusing any supplementals + personal statement
Plus have never used coalition
It’s not on coalition
Only MIT website
Not that long
Depending how fast you write essays
Logistics and inputting info wise it’s a bit of a hassle because you need to manually list out courses
But you can fill everything out in like 20 mins
4-5 supplementals I forgot
The Why MIT is actually the shortest supplemental like 100 words
The rest are like 225
Typical challenge essay
Leadership
One asks like unique aspect of educational journey
And one more I forgot lol
Oh the last one is what do you do for fun
That’s 150
Tricky is hard to define, but you definitely have to think hard as to how to represent yourself with so little words
If you pull it off successfully it’ll def help with other school supplementals
Too bad I did everything last minute, but that’s something I realized after submitting my apps 💀
Oo bet
That's prob gonna be me
I'm applying like 7 t10s and starting in winter break
It’s not fun 💔
damnnnnnn
HEY BUT YOU GOT IN THO.
ALL THAT MATTERS
how cracked were your ecs
(intl comps?)
USACO, math, and an unproductive research experience at Columbia over the summer
Nothing impressive
I did a lot of dual enrollment though that might be a factor idk
mm i see
MIT shreds our admissions files so we can’t see what the AOs thoughts of us were
true but ykwim
My classmate did primarily school clubs and was IB diploma
That was pretty much it
And he’s with me here
oh? oo
I guess sure but I’m not giving you a chanceme I’m gonna tell you to apply regardless
oo i see i see
ah that makes sense
all good
whats your major
Maybe AI
I’m not sure the “due date” but you can declare as soon as freshman spring
Yeah
what's your fav unknown aspect of mit that you love
Like something niche and unique abt mit that I found and like?
I’ll have to think abt that
yep yep
I don’t know if ppl talk abt this much
But what I love here is that people rarely judge
A lot of times I feel super stupid
But I’m glad mit admits the kind of people who are actually compassionate and like to help
I also didn’t expect how much free food mit has idk if other schools do 💀
Even if you don’t want to go
(solely because of the whole "MIT students = tryhards" thing but that acc sounds so sweet and makes yall feel human)
If you get accepted you can go to cpw
And that on its own is fun you get a taste of the fun side of MIT
Nah the “tryhards” have a life lol
I’ve met medalists that are hella humble
You’d never know that they’d have such an accomplishment until you check their LinkedIn
We’re just people
(wait whats cpw)
Campus Preview Weekend
ooo
MIT flies you out to campus for 3.14 days. You stay with a student host and it’s basically like a 3 day long festival
I’d just want to come into the conversation to ask how the average student that got into mit was?
There’s all sorts of events for specifically admits to get to know others
Average is…relative
Like all I’ve heard from my friends who got in was that everyone there was either like a medalist or got in for some insane ecs like winner of isef is that true or is it just the people we hear about?
Oh there are def a lot of these people
