like just because no one applied doesn’t give you a huge advantage in and of itself, but the fact that nobody did maybe suggests that you are one of the few equipped and qualified and makes it all the more impressive that you thrived in an environment that maybe isn’t as high-performing

I think more than this, the fact that 2-3 students from my country applied played a much larger role!! I’m not sure how much the region/high school matters, but I’m sure that the country is something they consider so I think that definitely helped me. As ezze said, i think it helped AOs contextualize how much work I put into applying!!

Hey I know the question wasn’t directed to me but I felt like saying something. I’m also an international studnet and I recently got into Stanford with having not done any kind of generic ECs, like at all. My major EC activity was forming and leading a book club in my public local library (which was very impactful and you can tell I formed it with a clear intention). I also participated in conferences (MUN, philosophy related,…) and did a good amount of volunteering hours. All was done out of pure passion and dedication. I think what you need to know is that the admission office evaluates every student fully independently of what others have done. If you do these “generic” ECs, they have to serve a bigger goal or painting, let’s say, that you draw about yourself through your application. Do what you feel is right and good luck! I believe in you.

I also had my own doubts applying, but now I look at it differently.

hey :) my most “generic” ecs were probably stuco prez or mun. I feel like doing these nonprofits or research is good only if you’re really passionate about it, and if you’re doing it just for your app then that’s extremely evident. As moon said, doing things within your own community and out of desire to do it will take u so much further than having a 401k nonprofit that you obviously started to seem impressive. My ecs were extremely fun for me and I think that showed through my supplemental essays! otherwise… this might be you 😔💔
