As long as you can make it all make sense with your story then you should be okay. And the yale academic areas essay doesn't seem to be as much of a "why major?" they just want to hear about something you're interested in that field....a question you want answered or a hypothesis you want tested yknow?

the biggest issue with going too far back is it seems like you’re just digging for anything that grasps at math and if that connection throughout what you do isn’t visible, and its just dropping lore from elementary school, it may make it harder for your AO to see why in the present

not to say that you cant go far back but just make sure you tie it into who you are today and what that means for what you want to study
