and that was all she asked! we spent a lot of time talking about a bunch of stuff but she only asked five questions. i didnt do much prep and i was super vulnerable and i think i walked away proud of what i did instead of if i over prepped and became too robotic

what's a challenge you faced
what sort of communities are you looking for in college
what sort of college experience do you want
name an event or time that changed your mind or the way you thought about something
what sort of career do you want
what do you do outside of school?
what achievement (academic or otherwise) are you most proud of
anything i missed?

we focused a LOT on what i wanted from college which really tripped me up

yea i jsut had my interview a couple hours ago and i think it REALLY depends on the interviewer. the only real questions my interviewer asked were:

1. tell me about ur background (like how the conditions u grew up in shaped your interests) and some end goals for career
2. what are some experiences youve had relating to ur major
3. what are some things you do/do not want to take away from your college experience
   we were able to keep the convo flowing well by talking about modern issues in teh world relating to my major (like ai and political policy, which was good bc theyre a diplomat)
   one thing i asked them (and i recommend everyone asking this) is: what specific experience/encounter did u have that changed the way you viewed a topic unrelated to ur major?
   i think our interview lasted like 70-80 mins iirc. overall cool experience to talk to a person with a background that im very unfamiliar with

Interviews usually go pretty late, for rea it was like december 1st. Honestly the later you get an interview, it means the numebr of alumni was scarce so the interview can actually be a good sign if u get one depending on how many ppl apply in ur area

My dad lore dropped to me abt his Harvard interview

This was in the early 80s

He said he had two

For the first one a staff member at his school pulled him and another kid out of class into a conference room where a Harvard alum was waiting (believe they interviewed separately tho)

Neither of them knew they were getting interviewed until it happened

The alum was a bit of a hardass like when my dad brought up how coworkers at the maintenance place he worked at had “personal issues” (coming to work drunk) interviewer asked my dad how he’d fix that

Alum also asked my dad abt newton’s three laws since he found out my dad was taking physics but since my dad forgot the third he just bullshitted and said “we haven’t gone over the third yet”

The second interview was on Harvard’s campus with an AO but my dad requested that one

He said that was an easy one and it sounded more like current day alum interviews

Is there an estimate on the percentage of admitted international students that had interviews?

Cause 2 ppl from my school got interviewed a while ago and they’re super strong while many other equally strong students and I weren’t interviewed so I’m assuming I’m cooked (everyone got deferred from an Ivy ED or REA). I’m in a very alumni dense region btw

even if you’re in an alumni dense region there’s really not much for you to do about it other than wait, to be honest… like you don’t really know the availability situation for the interviewers and even if the committee picked the two “strongest” candidates from your school i doubt that it would prevent them from considering you

like interviews really don’t matter that much at all

we look at them a lot because it seems to be “merit based” and an indicator of how you are doing in the process because of the slight prescreen but what’s truly merit-based is your acceptance

we have like 5 weeks just to enjoy your senior year haha

Yeah I’ve considered that as well. And considering the Ivy deferrals I’m sure almost all of us are passing the grade, testing, and even to some extent EC expectations and getting into committee but obv getting out of it at Harvard is brutal
