Schools: UC Berkeley and UC San Diego
Intended major: Nutrition and Metabolic Biology for UCB, Public Health with Concentration in Medicine Sciences for UCSD
Similarities: Both can lead to pre-med/health careers with work; similar research opportunities
Costs: About the same with housing included
UC Berkeley Pros:
- Close to home
- Semester system
- More prestigious
- Lowkey liked the campus more, it’s really nice
- Weather is pretty good
- Research opportunities
- Nutrition can go into health care as well
- Stronger connections + better job opportunities (?)
UC Berkeley Cons:
- Location is unsafe
- Only one year of guaranteed housing (housing shortage)
- Very competitive and intense—worried about adjusting since the environment is very different compared to my high school
- Hard to get into clubs
- Scared I‘ll be unable to keep up
UC San Diego Pros:
- Beautiful campus with nice views (though I toured in during spring break, so not sure how it feels with students)
- The major I wanted to study (possible to change majors at Berkeley)
- SoCal is stronger in the medical field (more opportunities?)
- Guaranteed housing for 2 years
- A lot of my friends are going
- Safe area, close to the beach
UC San Diego Cons:
- Quarter system (fast paced)
- Colleges are spread out, might make it harder to make friends, also known as socially dead
- Far from home (but could build independence).
- Got into Revelle College—more intense GE requirements.
I can’t decide between UCSD and Berkeley since the majors are different. I know I want to go into the medical field (pre-med or health), but I’m still figuring out the exact path. UCSD is more known for medicine, and I do enjoy public health—but I don’t want that to be the only reason I choose it, especially since Berkeley is a great school as well. I prefer nice weather, but location isn’t a huge factor. I like lively, motivating environments, and I’m pretty social but I can adjust anywhere.
