Northeastern

NEU Pros:

  • Boston Campus
  • Heard from multiple people that the co-op program is really good
  • Boston is cheaper in general compared to New York
  • Had more of a "campus"
  • school culture with the other Boston schools

NEU Cons:

  • Heard from a friend that went to NEU that vital CS programs were taken out
  • limit of 100 co - ops applications (not sure if its across all 4 years at NEU or per semester)
  • need to live on campus for minimum of 2 years I heard
  • people often on co-ops so there may not be so much school culture (not sure about this one tho)

NYU

NYU Pros:

  • Has more "prestige," but not sure if that really matters for CS/Engineering
  • CS/CE Program is overall decent (not sure better than NEU after NEU CS changes)
  • In New York
  • read somewhere that internships are not that hard to get
    NYU Cons:
  • Overall living cost in NYU is more expensive than Boston
  • Cost of attendance to NYU is more expensive (about ~6k more I think)
  • No dedicated Co-Op / Internship program
  • no "actual" campus
  • Not sure if there's guaranteed housing
  • heard there is not much culture on campus
  • heard it can be very isolating at NYU

Tiebreaking considerations:

  • if the co op program is really that helpful for job search
  • if NYU's extra cost of about 6k is worth it more than NEU
  • Internship attainability for NYU tandon students, particularly for cs/ce jobs

co-op is limited to 100 but i'm p sure that's only for the CS majors

#

yes the program got pretty much overhauled and redone bc a lot of kids were apparently failing a class called object oriented design which is notoriously difficult and therefore they couldn't go on co-op which the school did not like

#

you don't need to live on campus for 2 years

#

only required for freshman year

#

2nd year you can go off campus but you gotta fill out this form

#

school culture uhhh

#

mainly in hockey yes

#

CS/engineering prestige does kinda matter but new york isn't that prestigious for CS/engineering

#

NYU def does not have much of a culture imo

#

the 6k extra is not really worth asw

#

you can ask me more abt both schools later

I suspect it will cost $80k/yr with 0 aid. Have you considered in-state public universities? Or are your family so well off that $80k/yr doesn't affect their finances?

It’s just idk if nyu is really worth that extra 6k esp for my major

i’ve heard ppl say that there really isn’t a community bc people are constantly coming in and out bc of the co-op system so joining clubs and greek life (or any sorority/frat) is a really good thing

#

for the sense of community and culture essentially

#

like yes NYU is well known but when you think NYU you don’t automatically think tandon you think stern and tisch

#

it’ll js mainly be for saying oh yeah i went to NYU for undergrad lol

#

maybe you’ll get some nepo out of it bc of the school name but it’s not really that helpful (source: my sister is a NYU tandon grad for math LOL)

#

with cs its trickier because CS at northeastern is op but same with nyu

#

northeastern will give you more opportunities to get a head start in your career pregrad, while nyu may give you more opportunities postgrad with the brand name and experience youll get in school

#

if no aid thats a rlly tough one, but ofc it depends on whether u wanna live in nyc vs boston, which there definitely IS a difference in

dry sentinel
#

but its for one cycle im pretty sure

#

meaning if you choose to apply to a co-op for like 6 cycles straight starting your junior year (which you can do assuming you dont get a co-op), then thats 600 applications

#

you will definitely get a co-op if you want it bad enough
