Intended major: finance/math (uw madison) or economics/math (bryn mawr)
Priority: job opportunities in high finance (quant, etc)

UW Madison (Finance Major)
Pros:

  • has a business school and offers a finance degrees
  • good alumni network
  • good B-school
  • public ivy
    Cons:
  • 4x more expensive than bryn mawr (but still not completely unaffordable)

Bryn Mawr (Econ/Math Major)
Pros:

  • less expensive
  • can take classes at UPenn
    Cons:
  • no finance major
  • math and econ programs aren't as good as UW Madison's

Main concern is maximizing my chances of breaking into high finance after college.

uw madison has the larger alumni network & more networking opportunities imo, i'd choose it unless you have a specific preference for an LAC

take it with a grain of salt but i'm not sure to what extent, if at all, bryn mawr students would be able to access upenn's student orgs + clubs either

1/4 of uwm's cost is huge

#

tbh if you're prepared to buckle down and work hard regardless in college, commit to the cheaper school :) the amount of money you'll save doing undergrad overshadows the opportunity costs of choosing bryn mawr over uwm

Bryn Mawr is a wonderful school IF you like the vibe. I would definitely visit both schools bc even though it’s not something you mentioned in your pros and cons list, the feel of a school is super important and these two schools have very different feels. Bryn Mawr has connections to UPenn but not enough to go there because of it. Usually only juniors and seniors can take classes there and like someone else said it’s limited. You can’t expect to take a large portion of your classes at UPenn. But you can take a large portion of your classes at the other two colleges in the consortium, swarthmore and haverford, so I’d check those two schools out to see if they’d fill any gaps. that’s a huge price difference so I’d consider things like how much are you sure you want to go into finance bc if you end up switching to something else later on you might regret spending extra bc of the finance opportunities

Honestly the vibe isn’t a defining factor rn cuz I’m pretty confident I’ll like bryn mawr too. And im someone who’s really adaptable and will flourish wherever. Im not completely sure of finance; i like math and problem solving and was initially leaning towards majoring in physics but I ultimately want a bachelors degree that can offer me a defined and fruitful career route. Im just struggling to figure out if uw Madison holds enough prestige in finance to be worth the extra money I’ll have to spend.

Bryn mawr is super super cool and I’d totally vibe there, but I’m not willing to sacrifice future career prospects for anything
