Schools: UC Berkeley and CSU Long Beach
Intended major: Applied Math and Linguistics
UC Berkeley
School 1 Pros:
- better networking/commections
- prestigious
- better social atmosphere (i am fine with the competition and alienation)
- i LOVE the bay area, its weather and overall the location of berkeley
School 1 Cons:
- Far away (i currently live in socal)
- Will cost me 18k/year (on top of my family contribution of ~28k)
- Unstable housing situation
- Grade deflation
CSULB
School 2 Pros:
- only paying 2k/year on top of my family contribution
- Likely getting into their honors college, which means priority registration and research access
- Already have research connections there
- Location is near my dads work, which is convenient
-professor-led classes (as opposed to grad school TAs)
-REALLY NICE gym
School 2 Cons:
- Commuter school (was told it was similar to community college)
- Linguistics curriculum is kind of incomplete
- Socially dead (this is really important to me)
- Their dorms kinda look like prison cells
Ultimately, UC berkeley is the riskier option, where CSULB is the safer one. Knowing more about the student life at berkeley would help inform my decision
