I’m just traumatized from my freshman year counselor
She was like oh u don’t need to take APs!
Yeah
But like beyond fall
I need to take 1 Spanish course, 1 education studies course, and 1.5 poli sci courses every quarter and then boom done
The actual courses themselves idrc
Rheyre all part of the same series so it’s kind of expected you take them next
Ohh
Noooo four class quarters
Yeah that’s not relevant to me
Four classes all humanities is a piece of cake
I took four classes at NU my first quarter
Some people even took 5 their first quarter
Ruby did you take dual enrollment during hs
WTF?
No not an option at my school
I know one guy at NU who was a year ahead of me and regularly did 7 courses per quarter
What the hell 😭😭😭
WY on yikyak
And he’s an env sci major
So good amount of stem classes
It’s interesting that 3 courses is normal at UCLA
It’s cause we have lives outside classes
3 courses is typically an underload at northwestern
Yeah heard that’s the case at ucsd
He’s an icon
lol
Would u say 4 classes is the norm at nu?
Idk about NU students but ucsd students …
Maybe I should ask Stanford ppl
4.5
All they do is study
About half do 4, half do 5
They hardly do ecs
A few crazies do 6+
😀
Also if you’re premed you want to take 3 classes anyways
Spend more time doing other stuff cause the majors and minors you do don’t matter
Ima be freelancing 20+ hours a week, doing daily bruin, and class
Ah yeah makes sense
Unrelated but when do AP creds and transfer credits appear on my degree audit usually
Like late aug?
I might also have an internship in which case I’ll turn down my regular freelance gig and do occasional freelance instead
I just really don’t want to take the Mcat while I have classes
Yeah last quarter I timed and I spent 40-50 hrs a week doing other stuff
So real
I had a friend work 2 full time internships
By orientation
My spring sem 2024 was the busiest ever for me
Then don’t
summer
Wouldn’t that mean I have to take my prereqs a lot faster then
Are you trying to do no gap year
I feel like taking all of them before junior year is kinda unrealistic
I had a 15 hr a week internship, a 5 hour a week freelance gig, editor in chief of my college newspaper (30 hours a week) and 7 classes in spring 2024. I almost passed out I’m ngl
Yes but I’ll probably end up taking one
Nah I’m finishing all of mine + 4 geneds before junior year
Did u do summer classes
If you want not to take a gap year then you have to finish by end of sophomore year
Bc idk how to finish them while only doing 3 classes per quarter
I will neverrr do summer classes
I’m doing 2 this summer but I didn’t have to
Real
Summer is for working full time imo it’s so much more fun than school
I just chose to because it felt like a waste of time to take these classes during the school yr
Yeah that makes sense
To each their own too
Also wasn’t allowed to work so 🥲
I’ll prob ask my advisor when I do orientation
Everyone has their own situations
Yeah
They’ll be a student
FYI
😀
May not be your major
Some journalists drop out of college after soph/junior year if they get a full time job offer
You can fit everything without taking summer classes if you want
I’ve been tempted sometimes
But the stability of a degree is just too hard to turn down
Unless you already have geneds done
Bc of the humanities classes right
Yeah there’s 4 or 5 extra classes you have to take in order to be able to apply to the major
So most people who do HBS forgo physics till junior year
X_x
It’s doable
Election week 2024 was the busiest week of my life actually, not spring semester 2024
Isn’t physics required to apply as an hbs major
You would just have to do a lot of 4 class quarters
No
I’m taking 0 stem courses at ucla
IMO not worth it as a premed
Yea that’s what I realized
It’s so freeing
I was originally planning on double majoring
I had some med student advisor at Geffen through CAC
And she was like yeah you can do it but it’s really not worth it because that time could be spent doing something else that adds significantly to your application vs an extra major that med schools aren’t going to do anything about
prepared to take that gap year 🙏
Here’s my course planner for fall 2025, with the caveat that I prob won’t get the poli sci upper div and I’ll just take whatever other poli sci upper div I can get
Yeah I’m finishing everything off but I’m gapping
Why are you guys all premed
Or if you’re me poli sci but secretly journalism
ookla got like the most premeds in the country
Polisci is much smaller percentage wise
Yeah
I think 30% of the college is like life sci iirc
how many people are actually committed to premed 😭
do like a solid chunk quit the premed track or smt
cause i'm actually second guessing myself
Nah you’ll be around pre law people mostly
Other than daily Bruin
Yeah
Cause they realize it’s not the track they want
I feel like daily bruin is tons of pre law
Which is valid
I’m sure
I was thinking of joining
But like
Daily bruin has so few actual journalism people
I feel like I’m not daily Bruin material
I mean whattt who said that
😭
The issue with like
Joining the daily Bruin or lit mag
Is how cracked people r
They aren’t tho
DB has three editors who I consider partially or fully cracked
I feel like everyone ik on the daily Bruin is cracked
Okay well maybe cracked at ecs in general but I mean cracked at DB stuff
Ohh
Yeah that’s fair
Is doing 3 classes in a quarter the best number for a freshman?
There’s no best number but for adjustment purposes id do 3
Better things be too easy than too hard
damn
@severe copper could u explain when lab classes are normally taken
Wdym when
like ls23L, chem14bl, and the orgo chem lab
um like
do u take it with the science class or is it usually taken after
You can do either
Realistically you won’t get anything other than 7L concurrently with the clas
So you’ll probably take BL and CL after ochem
Hiii bruins
Depending on when you start chem
How’s it going
ok tysm
should i treat lab as a free class or a serious time commitment
bc i thought it was a supp class that paired with a science class
or is it just a stand alone class
I am a bruin in stem (I’m going through a 1.6k row spreadsheet)
is it normal to take BL and CL during junior or senior year then?
Investigative journalism is like 1/3 emails and cold calling, 1/3 records and spreadsheets, and 1/3 actual journalisming
Serious time commitment
It’s busy work
But a lot of busy work
It’s not difficult just straight work
Stand alone
I just saw your Reddit post ☠️
Getting 7L and 7c are together is the only realistic thing and that will only happen if you first past
And sooooo many people did not get 7L the last two quarters so it will be competitive winter and spring
And @fading tartan you don’t have to retake your placement test for LS30, I got a 5 on ab and 4 on bc and still was able to take ls 30a and b
ok phew bc i dont wanna spend 20 more $
ugh enrollment is gonnabe such a nightmare
how different is ls30a from calc ab
js curious
You don’t
I don’t think I even took the placement test
This is like the most stressful one
All the other ones are better
Very very different
Not at all the same
They have a bit of overlap concept wise
Like in terms of derivatives and tangent lines
That’s all though
Ls is like life sciences math lots of epidemiology and population stuff
so its mostly exponential and log stuff ?
would u say its easier than calc ab or calc 1 ?
Nah
It’s like
It’s hard to explain
30a is very conceptual
30b is a mix of linear algebra random concepts and Multivar
Significantly
I struggled a lot the first time I took ab
30a is like just learning random bs concepts
I thought it was bs the whole time I took it but lowkey I see the stuff they taught me everywhere
31b will 100% be harder than 30a or b
mm i see'
yea i dont see the need to take real calc when im a premed
Yeah if you don’t want to struggle do 30
If you like Calc do 31
ok tysm
i still ptsd when i saw rejection
no need but there is a need if pursuing MD/PHD pathway
strange enough
idk what i wanna do yet tho
Oh will phd programs not consider ls30 as calc
Do you know anyone who is doing/did a cluster?
I did a cluster
Do you reccomend it?
So the cluster class is just the same class you take for each quarter in the year right?
Yes
You can drop any time
It’s nice cause you can second pass it winter and spring without worry
Second pass?
For every enrollment forward, you have two timeslots for enrollment. During first pass, you can only enroll in 10 units and during second, you can do up to your cap (usually 19 in l&s until you take enough to up it)
Ah
Since it's guaranteed I can use the earlier slot for more potentially competitive enrollments
Yup
Which cluster did you do?
note that if you have priority you get that over first pass iirc
no
well yes
but priority is 19 uns the week before first pass
is it not 10 as well?
ignore the music top right
ignore the music top right
i guess it uses pass system
did not realise that
no regents is 10
ic
Which cluster did you end up doing?
Yeah they prob will wait until your orientation
Biotech and society
I did that one because I was originally pre HBS
chat does anyone have any insights on reslife hiring timeline
😁
or work-study hiring timeline in general (specifically working library)
I have a question about work study too. When can we start applying?
Can I reapply for financial aid? Like for next year or this year
yeah you refile fafsa every year
yea i think they've just forgotten about wl applicants atp
the wl is cooked man
I have given up all hopes at this point
We are almost in August lol
they won’t let us use meal swipes at third party restaurants anymore
Pmo
Is this bc of funding cuts
I NEED MY LARGE STRAWBERRY FRAPPES AND GRILLED CHEESE BURRITOOS DONT PMO
Why does this happen before my time here even starts
It’s over
I started crying
No more bomb shelter
My life is over
I’m actually starving every day
All my classes are at bomb shelter
Kerckoff 🥲🥲🥲
ugh we need to start a petition to revert then
That’s what I’m saying
what is the bomb shelter 😭
We have a building that was built to be a bomb shelter during the Cold War
But now it’s for food
that’s so cool
vro we cant use meal swipes on anything but like dining halls
