  • Location/Region: Definitely USA I'm still choosing states and cities depending on schools, costs, opportunities and safety

  • Major: I'm mainly going for mechanical engineering, (although my teacher suggested me mechatronics but it's a new field so not much freedom choosing) I do have a soft spot for chemistry so material science seems nice too

  • GPA/Test Scores: I'm in between of 3.5- 3.75

  • Curriculum: undecided but I do enjoy learning alone and a bit of project activities

  • Size: Small is better is what I belive for teachers to concentrate on less students so better education

  • Costs: I could do 20k per year that is all included such as living cost and school fees. (I will definitely need aid but idk how for international students)

  • Schools You're Currently Looking At: Michigan tech, Olin University, Texas A&M (if possible, MIT, Stanford and Yale)

  • Additional: I'm an international student from Southeast Asia planning to attend a school in US, and... I'm underage going off alone into the unknown. I do have a plan for community colleges so I do need suggestions on that as well.
I don't mind much about weather but a balance of hot and cold would be nice.

Overall a welcoming low cost environment with good quality school is enough TT

Are you trying to do cc -> 4-year?

gloomy parrot
#

Yes or I would do 2 year cc and 2 year uni transfer

pastel moat
#

for tamu

gloomy parrot
#

But the admissions are closed for now I think

pastel moat
#

No

#

For cc

#

?????

#

No

#

You said 2 year cc

#

I thought you were trying to transfer

gloomy parrot
#

Tamu got cc?

pastel moat
#

No

#

texas has ccs

gloomy parrot
#

Ah

gloomy parrot
pastel moat
#

No

#

Just pick whatever has the classes you need, but iirc all of them do

#

Texas is republican leaning, whatever that means

#

Are you interested in cali at all

gloomy parrot
pastel moat
#

Technically it's bis for UCs

#

& you can guarantee some UCs

#

for engineering

gloomy parrot
pastel moat
#

Issue is that it is 160k for

#

The last two years yeah

#

Texas is a good middle ground i feel

#

There's also UIUC

#

If you're up for that

gloomy parrot
pastel moat
#

I need to clarify that the state kind of locks you into whatever your safety will be

#

Like if you go to texas

#

Your safety is tamu

#

If you go to illinois

#

Your safety is UIUC

#

This is kind of up to you

#

There's also no "feeder" into MIT, Stanford, Yale, etc.

#

or hypsm

gloomy parrot
#

What about MTU in michigan?

pastel moat
#

in general

pastel moat
#

Any publics assume community college within their state as a feeder into said publics

#

Cali cc feeds into UCs

#

Mich cc feeds into Mich privs

#

etc.

gloomy parrot
#

Oh, so I do need to choose the state and uni I'm aiming for then cc comes second I guess

pastel moat
#

All ccs are pretty good

gloomy parrot
#

Thank you so much, that encouraged me more after searching out for cc TT

pastel moat
#

I dont like the idea of

#

People saying "this cc feeds into this SPECIFIC uni"

#

when that isnt entirely true

#

There are a lot more factors

#

How much research have you done in regards to cc

#

There is a lot of talk with how community colleges like de anza or diablo valley feed into Berkeley specifically when it isn't entirely true

#

It's just that they have higher income and the students tend to be more supported by their families

gloomy parrot
#

I see

pastel moat
#

Anyway honestly it isn't that deep

#

I've taken classes at both "good" and "bad" ccs

#

I've had better experiences with "bad" ccs

#

Just pick whatever works for you location wise

gloomy parrot
#

Then is it entirely true when states and classes matter for engineering?

gloomy parrot
pastel moat
#

Pick whatever has the classes you need

#

@coarse token hi

gloomy parrot
coarse token
coarse token
#

all CS as well

pastel moat
coarse token
#

tuition is 70K so kinda

pastel moat
#

then bingo, you've proven my point

coarse token
#

but it's more on the schools merit

pastel moat
#

Is it

#

Or is it the opportunites they had

coarse token
#

yep, all of them aren't very rich people

#

the highschool gives you alot of opportunities

pastel moat
#

well then there u go

#

the kids did the opportunities

#

put in the work

#

I see no issue with this

#

It's just a school that had good opportunities and they made the most out of it

coarse token
#

but when we talk about a feeder school, it's mostly that the school does give you a boost

#

and I'm certain in all three cases they do

pastel moat
#

Yeah but in the case of cc, this isnt necessarily the case

#

People call the aforementioned ccs feeders when it's really daddy's connections that pulls through

#

DA is in a high income area where kids had prior connections to stuff

#

Same with DVC

#

DAC has some of the worst class registration systems to boot since they intentionally butcher class amounts

gloomy parrot
#

Occ, santa monica and santa barbara?

pastel moat
#

so you cant even get classes even right before welcome day

#

Yeah

#

I mean again all great schools i just dont think that the high amount of transfers means anything

#

SJECCD has the tools necessary for kids to succeed

#

Which is also in the bay area

#

I'd say their cs program is much better having been in classes at DA and DVC

gloomy parrot
pastel moat
#

Bay area costs yeah

pastel moat
#

which has traditionally been a factor

#

20% transfer from ccs to a 4 year, after all

#

You being able to transfer, though likely to be guaranteed, is not the status quo when thinking in a frequentist perspective

#

anyway thats my yap

#

Just pick whatever state you want to attend uni in

#

SJECCD is san jose's district

#

traditionally broke asf

gloomy parrot
#

Thank you so much tho, I really got a lot more informations than wreaking myself in Google for a week TT

pastel moat
#

Lmk and i can help

#

Id be more than willing to

gloomy parrot
#

Thanks! I'll update You

#

Do tell me if I can help in any useful way too!

pastel moat
#

Of course!

Feel free to reach out in #🚪-community-college
