Schools: University of Alabama Birmingham VS Purdue university
Intended major: Genetics and genomics
Similarities: I think the only similar thing is my major they both are completely different imo 💀

UAB
School 1 Pros:

  1. coa is 28k (after big scholarship)
  2. Admitted to honors program
  3. Dorms r rlly nice
  4. Nice, warm weather (i'm from India)
  5. R1 research university with 2 mandatory research projects
  6. Admitted early to graduate school aka i can do an accelerated bs/ms program and get both my masters and bachelors degree in 4 years
  7. Smaller class sizes
  8. Very flexible for switching majors or double majoring

School 1 Cons:

  1. Small campus (I've been in a small environment for most of my life and wanted the big school experience)
  2. Not a huge fan of the location (never been to alabama or any southern state)
  3. Comparatively small racial diversity
  4. Urban campus, so safety issues
  5. Less lively campus (more in-state than oos)
  6. Ranking isnt great

Purdue
School 2 Pros:

  1. Very good name recognition
  2. Huge campus, heard its very lively, big school experience
  3. Rlly good alumni network
  4. Good internship opportunities
  5. Apart from the weather i like the location
  6. More student diversity (more oos, asian population)
  7. Ranked better

School 2 Cons:

  1. Weather is very cold and i may have some health issues triggered by cold weather (yet to be determined)
  2. Apparently grade deflation is huge
  3. COA: 41-45k (depending on the dorms, no scholarship)
  4. Housing crisis , unlikely to get a good dorm
  5. I've heard its very competitive to get research opportunities
  6. Very competitive to get part time job opportunities

Tiebreaking considerations:
Ig if name recognition matters for job opportunities, grad school etc Cost is a factor (uab is easily affordable and Purdue is possible but expensive)

I can speak on parts 5 and 6 for purdue in that its not as competitive as you'd think. are there people who struggle who deserve it? yeah. but thats everywhere. there are sooooooo many labs here, especially in biology. all but one of my friends who are in bio and want a lab has one. (maybe not in bio department, but in places like ag or vet or psych or neuro or pharm).

also part time jobs is notttt that competitive unless ur going for the hard ones. if youre okay working in a dining hall thats really easy to get tbh and supposedly if you apply at the beginning of the school year SOS (desk dorm people) its also easy to get that
