That’s true for research but untrue for academics. Several CSUs have better academics than several UCs, and for some majors, certain CSUs are better than most if not all UCs. They just have different institutional priorities (UC is research, CSU is career/hand on)

there are multiple university of california campuses which could be considered to have weaker academics. i know of many departments in some of these campuses which are ranked highly online (i.e. us news), but fail in many ways other than research.

for example, the cdss department at university of california — berkeley has issues in terms of department management and has had poor impressions among students to the point where many have needed to self-study. getting academic advising from people in the letters & sciences department tends to better than in cdss itself

this is just one of many examples where perceived quality of academics is not equivalent to what students actually believe
