its also not a safety for CS, thats just a common misconception

but UIUC/Purdue are T10 CS programs, while Umass is a T30 program

It’s not that its a bad program, but UMass is generally more geared towards CS, business, nursing, and linguistics (a varied amount of majors) compared to engineering

its ABET accredited, but a lot of my friends going into engineering are considering WPI/RIT because those schools have a very specific 4-year plan for engineering majors or are overall engineering-focused

How was the process of finding jobs/internships related to CS for you and your classmates? there's a lot of uncertainty around that with CS these days.

unfortunately can't speak to that, my primary major was physics and I did research on campus every summer

best I can say is all of my friends that really seriously looked for internships did get one

I know a few people who got FAANG ones

jobs have been mixed

most people I know found a job, esp those who did internships

but I also know some who have been having a lot of trouble

but I think thats probably true across most univerisities

we do have a very good career services office to help with these things

other than housing, i dont think it has many benefits

i dont think industry jobs would care much, and for academia you wont finish the thesis before applying anyway

and it requires taking a pretty large number of extra classes not related to your field often (not always, e.g. many math courses are counted as honors and can fill these spots, which is one case where I think it makes sense)

departmental honors is good if you want to write a thesis, full honors is meh imo

its trimmed down, you dont get the housing and only requirements are two major-specific honors things (usually 1 credit courses), and a tehsis

if you want city-type stuff, obv it isnt that

but downtown is cute and has good resturuants (and bars when youre 21), theres a solid party scene and if youre social its pretty easy to find stuff going on

its a big school so theres often club/other events heppning

the main thing i think i've been dissapoitned by is like, concerts

there are a lot of local shows w local bands/artists that are fun, but access to big concerts is tough

theres a lot of retail stores in hadley. if you have a car its super easy, and doable but a litte harder by bus

bestbuy is the main one thats kinda far

i cant think of others that i've wanted that arent close

the crowd is good, i’ve found it generally easy to make friends. facilities are mostly good but depends somewhat on department, some buildings are very old and not maintained super well, but there are also a lot of very nice modern buildings

The CS program is great and generally well regarded, I think most students would say it was worth it

im not going into cs so maybe not the best to judge, but the good students generally do well for jobs, even in this market. The one thing ill say is, for most programs at umass, you really get out what you put in. The program is okay if you just do the classes, but really shines when you take advantage of the other resources available to you (research, career center, active clubs, seminars, etc), and that tends to translate into better success with internships and jobs

Lowk if I choose to go to umass I'd like to do that but like its first semester of freshman year, I feel like that might hinder my initial experiences on campus, but like its Spain

When I had an interview for Syracuse, which of course is a different program so take it with a grain of salt, a graduate student said that it actually helped them find their place on campus because they already established a nice friend group from the abroad program

very possible to join later, many do (i joined my senior year). How difficult it is varies, mostly on your major i think

the big constraint is how many faculty are available to do a thesis with you

if you can get someone lined up to do a thesis with, your odds of getting in become very very good

but also unlikely youll do that so early

im not sure how exactly the odds are early on, but I know many people that did it so its totally possible
