In one of the greatest cities on Earth, you'll be conversationally fluent in Chinese by the time you're done if you put in a basic amount of effort, still get an NYU degree (plus being able to speak Chinese will always be an interesting plus in the job market), can travel to Korea/Japan/HK/Thailand/Vietnam via a 3 hour flight tops (and Singapore/Cambodia/Malaysia/Indonesia in like 5 or 6), pretty good dorms, Shanghai/China's public services are insanely good, can travel anywhere worth a damn here in China via the gaotie, etc. etc.

"So (at least in my experience), the morning after Ivy Day I got an email from admissions that kinda explains what to do, so your friend will likely get the same thing. Basically a transfer option is when you go to another school for 1 year and take certain classes that Cornell asks you to take, do “well” in those classes (I’m in ILR so I just needed a 3.3 cumulative gpa), and apply as a transfer student.
If you follow all the conditions you should get accepted to Cornell as a sophomore (it says multiple times in the letter that it’s not 100% guaranteed, but just do this and you should get it, haven’t heard anybody say they got hosed by this).
Also, nothing is binding like ED, it’s all your choice and you can pursue the TO, get accepted and then choose to stay in your first year school if you want"
