from what i’ve read, colleges always accept more people than they know are going to enroll. a lot of colleges also have extensive waitlists to prepare for the exact scenario of someone deciding to not commit. if someone really were one spot away from being in the class, they would be waitlisted. so like if a cs person from michigan didn’t commit, then they would choose another cs major on the waitlist

this is from Who Gets in and Why by Jeffrey Selingo, highly recommend the book :)

for example, yales waitlist size is more than 1000 people!! while their class size is a little less than 2000

they have a lot of data scientist and statisticians that formulate the perfect class, so if i choose not to commit, they will likely have a couple other people with similar stats/major/bg to me already waiting on the waitlist
